Ok get ready because this is pretty long. The deck choice came from the fact that a friend Matt Booker had toyed around with the idea of a relinquished deck before and I never gave it much of a thought. So i think it was the Tuesday before the regional my dad brings home a few cards he said he bought of some kid and two Manjus are in it since I already had a deck lined up for me to play I suggested to my brother Andre that I could build him a relinquished deck he says ok so I ask Matt for a basic design of the deck take a look at it and my brothers current deck and make rcc or relinquished chaos control. Anyway when we play test the deck and I find it destroyed the deck I was going to play in play testing I decide to run it as well and borrow the other Manjus I need from my friend Matt and my teammate John Rocha. Matt stays over the night before the regional since we were giving him a ride up in the morning the day before my teammate Jordan Young decides to run whatever me and my brother are playing so we give him the list. Anyway the deck did great in play testing so I felt pretty confident in it, but I still knew that there is alot of luck in this format so I knew that would play a factor.

We pickup doughnuts for breakfast on the way and get lost in Indy for a little bit which is weird since this is like the 6th or 7th time we have been to Indy anyway we make it up there with about an hour before the tourney starts. First thing my friend says when he enters the room is that this guy Allen Pearl who cheated my brother in a regional is there basically he told the judges that my brother didn't show him the card he got with magical merchant even though he did so he got a game loss and lost the match I also heard that in the same tourney he got some guy from team evolution a game loss for calling him some name or something he hadn't shown up for any regionals since then so we assumed we wouldn't see him again but there he was. So anyway I fill out my decklist and side and wait for the tourney to start. Just so you guys know I didn't record this and I don't have life totals.

round 1 Paul Squires vs. Larry from D.D. Decimators

Didn't know this guy from before even though I am pretty familiar with most of the Decimators.
game 1: Anyway game one I thought he was a noob or something because I basically destroyed him like how round 1 should go.

game2: This game was much harder the guy forced me to make moves I wouldn't like to have made and left me topdecking the fact the I held on so long becomes an important factor in the match. Ok so hes not a noob.

game3:This game I hit a pretty good hand and I am in control for most of the game then at the end of the game I am way ahead in life but couldn't finish him I end with chaos and mirror force on the field I heard from my brother after the game the guy topdecks the Mobius he plays I'm still ok after that I go bring out another Chaos remove mobius set return which I could win with next turn he top decks another mobius but time is called this turn so he plays it hits me again with it and I go set Manju all he can do is tsuku Mobius down attack Manju with tsuku and hit directly with Mobius but it wasn't enough I simply ended my turn and won ahead in life.

After this game I'm not feeling so confident I barely squeaked out a win but my brother and Jordan playing the same deck destroyed their round one opponent. I look at the pairing for round 2 and find out I have to play my dad

round 2 Paul Squires vs. Tony Squires
This kinda sucks I know I won this game since even if I lost my dad would scoop to me.

game 1: not so sure on details except he tried to swap when I had goats I let him take it back but I had total control of this game and won.

game 2: All I remember in this game is its same as last except he plays return too early and I win after that oh ya in both games he top decks heavy storm the turn I set return both were two for ones.

After this round we get a lunch break so my dad gives me some money and me, Andre, and Jordan all 2-0 with rcc head to find something to eat, the head judge Chris Goff tells us that the closest place to eat is the Mall near by so we head for it and end up walking too far on the way some homeless guy asks us for money and some homeless woman asks us for a hug needless to say we were freaked and ran away, anyway we eventually make it to the food court and ate at mcdonalds. This is when we realize this mcdonalds sucks it takes them about 20 minutes to get me and my brother's order then they get it wrong by the time we get it back we had to run to make sure we wouldn't be late for round 3 they also forgot to give us fries but we had to hurry. We make it back with about 5 minutes to spare.

round 3 Paul Squires vs. Nick Irak
game:1 I think he plays graceful and drops a goldd and he chains ddv to my chaos removing blowback dragon hitting two in hand cards he also swaps me asura twice needless to say I lose badly.

game 2: since this was a bad matchup for the deck i side out all the relinquished stuff and side in like half my side deck. This game he starts with card destruction early which is gay since I had a good hand I remember holding a wave motion for a while until he used up some s/t removal but he flipped magician and reused card destruction to stop that plan. I think I win this game with Mobius the mvp from my side.

game 3: He plays graceful drops goldd then reuses it next turn and uses graceful again with magician Jordan shakes his head and walks off to see how Andre is doing. I regain some advantage with a 3 for 2 torrential and chaos. at one point he brings out blowback dragon hits my sak with its effect and attacks something I have swap in hand and need to topdeck something I draw frog swap it to him target his backfield and miss it of course attack frog and end. He plays Chaos removed blowback and ends I topdeck old vindictive magician set it and end. He plays spirit reaper in attack while i have no hand for some reason attacks my set with chaos I destroy it then he hits me for 300 and ends with reaper in attack and two backfield. I topdeck Mobius sack frog for it and hit his bluffs swap and mst and attack reaper ftw.

Again I had a close game so I am not so sure how I am going to do Jordan won easily again and Andre lost which sucked.

Round 4 Paul Squires vs. Justin Stroud

game 1: this game went back and forth with him at one point having 5 monsters which Ryan Gamble commented on since he was playing next to me and attacking through goats and knocking me down to 2000 to his 7000 something I snatch his Chaos and continue to remove each monster he has on the field until he goes up to 10000 something lifepoints. Having regained advantage I start making making bigger pushes at his life and I think I may have won with return.

game 2: this guy really should have had this game if he played it right he second turn confiscates and sees I have torrential and mirror force he gets rid of breaker, later I snatch his kycoo and keep attacking with it until he plays breaker hits snatch and attacks into mirror force. I set torrential and either frog or sangan he normal summons and brings out chaos I torrential getting yet another 2-1 off of cards he knew I had I just win this game with advantage.

Now that I am 4-0 I feel a little more confident Jordan won his game in like 10 minutes so we are both 4-0 and Andre is 3-1.

round 5:Paul Squires vs. nice older guy (sorry I didn't get your name)
game 1: I lose when he plays out two mirage dragons and I have an unplayable hand of zaborg, chaos, swap, relinquished, and something else.

game 2: I control the game with Cyber Dragon and using aprentice to grab faith and reuse swap and abuse it.

game 3: at one point in the game he has 3 monsters and i have old vindictive set and torrential set he attacks one into old vindictive I kill blade knight and he hits me with another monster. I go sorcerer remove warrior lady and use relinquished to take his last monster and attack directly after that I have too much control for him to come back.

After this round me and Jordan are still undefeated two of only 4 and Andre is 4-1

round 6 Paul Squires vs. Manny (Carlo) Perez

I won't even bother putting game 1 and 2 for this one game one I win early with a turn like Cyber chaos relinquished and Zaborg for game game two I win early doing the same except I use return to do it for a blowout match in like 10 minutes.

So I am one of two undefeated people in the tourney now and I hope Jordan wins his so that would make us the two 6-0 but he loses Andre wins again which I saw he played Grant Kelly it was game 3 when I got there and he had Grant on the ropes Grant tried to comeback but Andre had too many swing cards like relinquished and snatch even if he did and its on to round 7.

round 7 Paul Squires vs. Rob Pace of Chicago
really cool guy they have to re-pair before this round but since we were both 6-0 we knew we would stay at the same place I lose my first die roll of the day and it seems like a bad omen.

game 1: he makes a great move of setting don when i have manju out and I run into it this game goes much like that as I lose advantage and lose.

game 2: This game I think was pretty even and I return for game.

game 3: I remember I lucksacked Rob this game its gay but thats yugioh he has Cyber Dragon and Don Zaloog and a backfield and maybe one in hand to my Tsuku and old vindictive in hand, I topdeck snatch steal take Cyber turn it down with Tsuku and he has no answer to it I tsuku lock him with old vindictive and win.

I felt great after this game having the guaranteed top 8 when I was sure I was gonna lose Jordan wins again but Andre loses which sucks they post standing after this and of course I am #1 Jordan is #5 and Andre is #18 this is when we realize 3-4 x-2s will make it in which makes Jordan just about guaranteed and gives Andre a chance.

round 8 Paul Squires vs. John Meyers
I knew this guy and his teammates so I didn't want to knock him out of top 8 but I also didn't want to not go into top 8 as #1 because that would hurt my chance for an invite if I don't make top 4 so I decide to screw around and see what happens

game 1: I set like my whole hand turn two control shifts back and fourth for a little bit then I topdeck mst to hit his decree return and swap for the win.

game 2: Not sure what happened but it was fast I win this one two just screwing around I felt kinda bad but more happy I was 8-0.

I find out that both Andre and Jordan lose this round we are not sure about Jordan's guaranteed top 8 now since he got paired down and lost. I buy some hot sleeves from Carlo that Rob was using in our game and wait around for top 8 to be announced. Of course I am #1 I give a shout when Jordan makes it in 7th and the guy I beat last round made it in 8th which made me happy I didn't knock him out but it also meant rematch. Me and Jordan wait around for deckchecks and I am pretty satisfied that two of the three copies of my deck played got top 8. During deck check one of Jordan sleeves that has treeborn frog is considered marked and he doesn't have anymore so I let him use the hot sleeves I got from Carlo. When top 8 begins its a rematch between me and John and Jordan and Rob.

Top 8
Paul Squires vs. John Meyers
I felt pretty confident I would win again and my brother noticed how nervous John looked.

game 1: he goes first and opens with graceful and confiscation not much I can do.

game 2: I saw a tomato last game so I side in a couple banisher of the Radiance. I am pretty sure I had control most of this game and won.

game 3: At one point in this game my hand is pretty good and I notice John is shaking a little the fact he is so nervous makes me think he has a bad hand so the games comes down to this he torrentials my Chaos Asura for the win but I still feel pretty confident since i am holding snatch I hit him with Manju later knocking him down to 1200 then I win when I drop chaos and snatch.

I feel great having locked up an invite and being 9-0 so far, Jordan lost to Rob I heard by drawing two triple chaos opening hands. Joey Crisara gets scoops to the finals from Carlo then Rob and I move on to the semis.

top 8
semis: Paul Squires vs. Louie Raimondo
game 1: things go back and forth in this game at one point he plays confiscation and see I have three Chaos in hand and looks at my grave and sees I can play all three so he discards one, later in the game I bring out two Chaos removeing the rest of his goats set return hoping to use it to win next turn he plays snatch on one chaos removes the other and sacks for Mobius so I lose

game 2: I saw lots of flips last game so I side in two mystic swordsmans I just maintain control with Chaos and relinquished and win this game.

game 3: He abuses tsuku and some flips this game my only chance is when I set return ftw to use next turn and again he has mobius to get rid of it I use relinquished later but he has snatch ftw.

So after going 9-0 I lose and finish 3rd which I'm happy with because I got my invite also my deck was real succesful getting 2 of the 3 people playing it in top 8.

props:
getting my invite
Jordan making top 8
playing relinquished
Matt for the idea
my dad for bringing those manjus and giving me the idea
John Rocha for letting me borrow cards
teams judgement and kamikaze for being so cool
Rob, Carlo, and John all making top 8 so me beating them didn't knock them out.
those hot sleeves
Louie for winning so at least I lost to the guy who won

slops:
not going 11-0
Andre not making top 8
Jordan not getting an invite
scary homeless people
Mcdonalds
Mobius hitting returns
stein I didn't lose to it but eww

I'm glad you and your friends did well with Relinquished Chaos. I've had success with the decktype myself in the past. One thing though: when your opponents main Mobius, it's a good sign to side out Return. You lost those games because you didn't.

Memory is always the hard part. We almost need a court reporter to keep track of everything.

Good report...nice first attempt.

What time did everything end?

Ya but I didn't know how many Mobius the guys were main decking even if it was two I only had the one return the odds aren't exactly favorable that it will be hit by Mobius everytime but oh well thats yugioh anyway I will probably play this deck at SJC Indy since it just did so well at the regional.

So how many times did you get out relenquished? I mean, did it help you as much as you hoped it would? Or was it mostly the whole cyber/chaos deal that won it for you? I love the deck idea and all, might try it out, but I want to know if the relenquished part helped you much.

Relinquished was pretty good almost like have extra snatch steals but Manju was the best he becomes an instant floater when you play him.

Congratulations Paul!!!

I really like the choice of two Vindictive Old Magicians in the deck. With the revamped ruling on Apprentice Magician, I'm sure it must have been nice to Creature Swap the apprentice and have options on what to bring out.

I think you should run this at the SJC at Gen Con. You have the skills to make Top 8...and I'm not saying that just cuz I know you in real life. I've been lucky to see a lot of talented players in action from all over the country...so I know skill when I come across it.

(Now only if I can pick up some of that skill...I would stop making mistakes when I play haha )

Anyways...good luck to you in future events. I will see ya and your team at Gen Con Indy !!!

Thanks Simon I probably will play this at Gencon since its the only success I had in a regional this format so far I may make a few tweaks but the deck will be mostly the same.

Yay!!! I got props...

Seriously, why the hell did you go to McDonalds when there was a mall? I went to the mall for pizza, and that was some good stuff. I'll type up my tourney report later.

See what happens when you stop using random Dark World trash for stuff that actually works? You make top 8, get an invite, and even get some style points for it.

And for god's sake, call the deck by it's cool name. Tefon Pea-Time Regional Blinky Jank.

Hey Paul, I was your first round opponent. It was a good duel, I just felt a bit ripped off at the end of the third duel because I probably would have won, but time was called. I know you had life advantage, but do think I would have won because of my card advantage and field advantage. I think you actually set one of your Manjus near the end, I summon Tsuku and flip flop Mobius, strike down Manju with Tsuku and hit with Mobius, trying to deal the needed damage I just couldn't fast enough. Final life was 1250 to 3550, just one Mobius hit short of victory. Good game though, and I wouldn't mind dueling again sometime.

Ya I wasn't sure exactly how the end went down it was the closest I was to losing during all of the swiss rounds but if it weren't for those two topdecked Mobius I would have had you without time. Will you be at Gencon Indy if so see you there. I fixed the end of that game you were right about the Manju.
