Can I Synchro with Xyz monster?

I dont think you can, but I was asked the question from the Title "Can I synchro with Xyz monsters?" I told the player No, but that I would ask further and make sure.

I told him Level and Rank are not the same thing.

Not that it really matters but the example he gave was...

Player 1 has a #39 Utopia with no materails. Summons Kerbons and wants to Synchro his Level 2 Tuner with his Rank 4 to make Brio. Can he?

First of all doesnt Utopia die if it has no materials? And Ranks do not equate to levels, you cannot use XYZ monsters as synchro materials, since synchro materials are required to have a level.
