jeez, when ur playing the game in battle bring up the help menu- it practically explains the whiole thing. But i may as well.
Special attack is like attcak. It determines the power of a special attack your are using.
Special Attack types are:
Dragon,water,ice,psychic,dark,grass,Fire and Electric
The Higher the Sp.atk the ore poweful;that speical move will be.

Special defense is like defense, but it just determines how much resistance to a special attack you have- the higher it is the less damage you take.
I hope that Helps

Physical attacks:
Bug,fighting,Ghost,normal,ground,rock

Hidden Power's type can vary, along with the attack stat it uses, and yet Counter always works against it and Mirror Coat never does. >=/

That might be because the game recognizes it as a Normal move (since it's officially classified as such), even though the actual attack type isn't.
IMO, they should have classified Hidden Power as a "???" type, like Curse.
