As far as the old mythology goes, a phoenix will live forever and always come back.

They simply are reborn as a chick, as illustrated in more than on scene in Harry Potter.

Well, I know a phoenix is immortal according to myth, but J.k rowling changes things to suit her style, if you have nothing postive to add then don't post at all. I was just looking for an answer, not your critism.A

Yes, and he exploded back into a just-hatched chick. Dumbledore put him in his pocket, remember?

Ah, but you decided to think the worst of me. I wrote that so it could be taken as an insult, or as a joke. You decided that people on the internet must be bad people and were biased in reading it. I thought the "(repetition!)" part might have been a clue, but... The internet has a bad rep... Maybe I should have added a "^_^"
I wonder where Fawkes lived before it was with Dumbledor...

Maybe he's always lived in Hogwarts as the companion to the Headmaster. Like the sorting hat.

Can something that has no end ever have a beginning?
Meh, that starts down the slippery path to religion, and as much as I'm in the mood to be banned...

Of course. Phoenix myth always has them being originally born from some source of fire, and continuing their immortal lives from there.

I'm sure it'll be disclosed in book 6 or 7.

I'm not so sure about that. Fawkes seems like a small detail next to Harry learning that he has to kill Voldermort or be killed

Aren't Fawkes' tail feathers the ones inside Harry and Voldemort's wands? If so, the makes the old bird a pretty big detail if you ask me...

Fawkes is not part of the headmaster of hogwarts deal. When Harry went into Riddles book and saw Armando Dippet's office Fawkes was not there. It is possible that Dippet kept Fawkes somewhere else (maybe he was alergic to Phoenix feathers) but I doubt it.
I highly doubt JKR has changed anything as small as the lifespan of a Phoenix. She tends to make things up as she goes along so somthing like that wouldn't be changed unless it directly impacted the story.

i was always under the impression that a phoenix egg hatches in flames, and then it continues to live and die forver after that. So Fawkes might not be very old. Still immortal, just young. Or maybe he's Dumbledores pet, and so was not in the head office when he wasn't head.

Mythology has always held the phoenix as immortal, so technically they have a beginning, yes, but not an end.

Beginning is such a stupid term. The fact that time can be bent and changed implies that there is a lot about it that isn't understood.
It might just be that we have an empiracal version of time that only works under a small set of cercumstances. The big bang is a much different set of cercumstances than how the universe is now. Perhaps time was changed then so there wasn't nesscessarly a beginning.
