i was reading aoj castastor's effect ans was wondering if aoj catastor has to survive the battle in order for it's effect to work.

The effect of "Ally of Justice Catastor" activates at the beginning of the Damage Step, before you calculate damage. "Ally of Justice Catastor" destroys the monster, and afterwards the monster is not on the field, so you do not calculate damage. Thus, no Battle Damage is inflicted, no monsters are destroyed by battle, etc.

ok, i want to make sure i understand the ruling correctly. here's how i understand it:

if i have aoj catastor attack any non-dark monster(even monsters with attack points higher than aoj) than aoj's effect would automatically kick in at the start of the damage step and destroy the monster before any damage would be calculated thus no technical battle occurs. is that right?

Yes, more or less. It's still considered to have attacked, though.

That is correct, yes.

Along with that, keep in mind that Catastor will also destroy a monster like Sphere of Chaos or Dark Simorgh, since along with a Dark attribute, they also have a Non-Dark Attribute.

perfect but would catastor's work if there is a light and darness dragon on the field?

Catastor's effect would be forced to activate once, and then Light and Darkness Dragon's effect would negate it (assuming its stats were high enough to do so).

Link 2 - Light and Darkness Dragon

After that, the Damage Step would proceed normally as if you'd attacked of been attacked by a Judge Man, since Catastor wasn't destroyed.

you are already in the damage step.

i had asked this question to a judge at sjc regarding this card

what happens when i atk into a giant rat with catastor? is giant rat considered to be destroyed by battle or card effect because catastor has to battle first..

then he talked about the errata. which makes sense

now, he also said that if the g-rat was facedown, then it would be able to search and ss an earth monster. if catastor attacks a faceup one, then it wouldnt search.

my question is..why not?

If Catastor attacks a face-down monster, Catastor doesn't activate, so you proceed with the battle, Giant Rat is destroyed by battle, and Giant Rat activates.

If Giant Rat is face-up, its Attribute is not DARK, so it is destroyed by Catastor's effect (not by battle), and so, Giant Rat doesn't activate.

so once you atk into a f/d g-rat and it is flipped face up, then the dmg step had already begun thus catastor doesnt get the effect. i think...something like that

It can't be chained to Catastor, as you are within the Damage Step.
