I recently got interested in this game too, I'm gonna buy the Disgaea deck in English soon I think.
Try this link for some translations : http://ws.nk-ds.org/

The game has already plenty of booster packs and starter decks (considering it was released only a year and a half, it's pretty good), I really like the fact that there are a lot of different archetypes, and the mechanics of the game seem good and balanced so far (not too much broken/expensive things). It's quite different from regular TCGs, and less luck based since you can easily "mulligan" in the beginning or discard to draw more for a minimal cost.

I can easily see this game getting popular if it were released in the US and Europe.

I already bought a Disgaea English deck, I'm just waiting for it to arrive.
I intend to learn the game and if I think it's good, I'll try to get others around me to play.
The only issue that may arise is the language barrier.
But, I've only heard good reviews for the game.

Cool, and just wondering, what did you get in the english deck ? Translated rules too ? A playmat maybe ? Holos ?
I could learn the rules thanks to some links here and there on the internet too, not that hard actually, but indeed the language barrier may prove to be troublesome because there's plenty of cards with text-heavy effects and lots of connections and combos with each other.

It came with a playmat(like U.S. TCG starters), instructions, and 50 cards. Of which, I pulled 2 cards that I only received 1 of. No foils.

That's nice, I'm ordering some trial decks and maybe a playmat to get started. I hope I'll be able to have a kind of preview in my local shop or something.
Thanks for the answer bro ;-)

I'm gonna order some more trial decks, not sure when.
The only thing holding me back is the insane amount for shipping or the product price.

I found the English Disgaea trial deck for $17.99 + $5 shipping on E-bay.

I have found other trial decks for $19.99 + $5 shipping from the same seller.

I have also found a variety of other decks for $12.90, and some nice sleeves, but the shipping is nearly $20.
Found on the site, Hobby Search-Weiss Schwarz Search.

So, I'm looking into getting discounts on the trial decks for buying so much, as in bulk.
Because I don't want to be charged $20 for $30 worth of product.

Mind you, the other decks don't come in English, just Japanese. That means all the rules, paymat, instructions, and cards are all in Japanese language, non-Kanji.

I'm planning on making this game get some attention in my area and then onto my next college in August.

Yeah I know it's a shame only the Disgaea (not the best choice for a english first trial deck btw) is the only deck that has been translated, but I don't really mind japanese cards, actually I've started a lot of TCG (including Yugioh) with japanese cards (there were japanese cards only tourneys too, pretty cool ).

I think the price on shops like 1999 or toyslogic are terrible, totally overpriced. Personally I've bought them through a acquaintance of mine who runs a shop in Japan and buy stuff from his customers on Yahoo auctions Japan and whatnot. You just pay some tax for the shop of course, but basically you can buy them for about their original price in yens.
I don't think he'd ship to some place else than France though (cuz I'm French actually), I'll ask him.

However I tried to find stuff on Ebay too, and besides pcpowercomic, nobody seems to sell WS decks... Hope it'll change in the future.

Edit : new stuff in pcpowercomic's Ebay shop, check it out : http://stores.ebay.com/Power-comic__W0QQ_sidZ127796480?_nkw=starter&submit=Sear ch

yes, so far.
The game reminds me of two people trying to overload the opposing player.

I also play this game with few friends, mainly one due to bad schedules with the others. So far I am enjoying this game, due to the fact that luck plays a huge factor in this game. I have about 6 decks and so does my friend, so we have a lot of different decks to play with.

Where would one find this stuff? Is it available in English?

And the name is "Weiß Schwarz" not "Weib Schwarz". It's German for "White Black." The ß is an sharp S, and is alternately written as SS like this: Weiss Schwarz.

To get this game, you will need to buy online. There is only 1 English starter out. It is Disgaea. It generally runs about $25 with shipping. Cards seem more durable than other TCGs. Rules are pretty simple.

Great game. Due to the major luck factor, the "duels" are quite balanced. Too bad only Disgaea's out in English though... I've gotten a few JP decks and they play out pretty well.
This game is bound to get popular wherever otakus are concentrated=)

that will confuse some players and promote the game while playing another...genius!

I hope it becomes/stays big for awhile, in the US and in Japan.

Toaru Kagaku no Railgun's WS pack sales have topped the list once already (beating Yugioh), so it should be pretty big in Japan right now.
And the fact that it expands its fanbase with every additional anime gives it huge potential. It doesn't even need to spend extra funding in commercials like Yugioh does, as long as people watch animes.

I just recently picked up 4 of the Trial Decks (Haruhi, Fate/stay Night, King of Fighters, Disgaea) and 6 other friends have also just learned the game. We all love it, but don't know enough about it to know what are the best decks/combos going. Anyone know if multi-series decks are worthwhile, or is mono-series the way to go?

Best combos/decks are all stuff people sum up after they play for a while, so just play the game and you'll figure everything out.
The game's fairly new, so I'd say just play it as you like. Use the trial decks as they are for now, and after you've played a few matches and have gotten the feel, you can consider mixing.
Different decks have different strategies, so mixing requries a bit of synchronity (like attributes, brainstorm effects etc.). I'd advise against it if you can't get any booster packs, since mixing requries quite a lot of stuff.
But hey, there's still the huge luck factor, so basically, whatever you like.

Hrm, I'm confused. Looking at a card from the Fate/stay Night Trial Deck, Funny Lion. It's ability is "[Counter] Choose 1 Character Card on your Stage, during this turn, it gains Power +5000 and Soul +1". Does anyone know the benefit of your defending character gaining Soul in defending against a Frontal Attack?

I was under the impression that in a Frontal Attack only the attacker deals Soul Damage to the player. Is this not the case? Do both players actually deal Soul Damage to each other in the case of a Frontal Attack? Or is there some other benefit I've missed?

I believe if your opponent has a character, let's say Craker Haruhi(as translated). 9000 and 2 soul.

Frontal attack against your Most Skilled Champion Saber. 5000 and 1 soul.

Use the Funny Lion. Saber gains 5000 and 1 soul.
Damage is dealt. Saber has 10,000 and Haruhi has 9000. Haruhi would be defeated.

I'm not sure on the next part, because I would guess that the two character's souls would compare and whoever had more would deal damage to the other player for the remaining.

Ex: Sakura and Haruhi and Funny Lion was played for Sakura when Haruhi attacks frontal. Sakura would be at 14,000 and 3 soul and Haruhi would be at 9000 with 2 soul. Deal (3-2=1); 1 soul to the owner of Haruhi.

I'll ask someone that will know, because the English rules just state that the attacking character's soul is dealt to the defending player. But, why would you increase your soul as a defense if it serves no purpose?

[Bodyguard] can only be used during your opponents turn.
Funny lion is an event, and can be played on your own turn. The [counter] effect here just means you can also play this event on your opponent's turn.

Additional Comment:

During frontal attacks, no soul damage is dealt.
It's either char VS char or char VS player.
And side attacks are soul minus level=damage, not soul minus soul=damage. Common misconception there.

Actually, from looking at the rules it's quite clear that Frontal Attacks do deal damage to the player as well, at least from every source I've found. This translation of the manual and this Wiki Page both indicate that the Damage Step happens with all battles, regardless of what type of attack. The only steps of an attack mentioned as optional are Counter and Battle, which are both Frontal. And more importantly, Damage occurs before Battle.

Also, at the tournament I sat in on, I saw plenty of people snatch a win by suiciding their small characters for just 1 or 2 Soul Damage into big Level 3s. So I'm sure that's how it works. Otherwise it's far more beneficial simply to side attack always.

However, I didn't realise that Counter could be used during your own turn. I should have, as Backup specifically mentions "When your Character is Frontal Attacked". Thanks!

From what I found out, from

Assuming that the Trigger check reveals nothing special, the opposing player plays Funny Lion while Cracker Haruhi Front Attacks Dark Sakura. Damage step comes next after Counter step, of which Haruhi has 2 Souls, and the damage will be taken by the defending player (Damage Cancellation applies).

After Damage step, Battle step takes place. Both Character card's Power stats will be compared. During which, the defending Character card will be of 14 000 Power and the attacking, 9000 Power. This puts Cracker Haruhi to Knockout mode.

To answer the second part of your question, as Cracker Haruhi do not possess <<Magic>> Trait, the only boost will be 5000 Power to Most Skilled Champion Saber's stats. This will result in her final Power being 10 000, still a nodge higher then Cracker Haruhi and resulting in the same battle result.

If you're curious about the +1 soul in the Event card text, the card can be used in your Main phase and used to boost a Character card's soul as well.

Hope this helps

Regards,
Mycstea
Hopefully, this will straighten out a few things.

As for some brokenness of the strategies, a person at level 2 can win in one turn if their opponent has level 2 and lower characters. This has occurred with Bearer of the Sacred Sword Saber with The Sword of the Promised King. So, play Saber and any other lv 2's with 2 soul. Play the climax card, and pay 2 from stock for effect. Now, the opponent's frontline is empty and all of your characters get +2 soul and +1 because no characters are in the opponent's front line. 2+2+1=5 for just Saber. X3=15, just over 2 levels and that's without playing Funny Lion... This ability can ruin a deck if the deck lacks level 3's.
