Oddity meets trendy...

I remember seeing Spellgrounds when I was a kid and never cared for how they felt...

What u need,

Cotton felt material that mesures at least 28"x28""(about $20 a yard
thin poyerster pading that has the iron on glue on one side that mesures at least 30"x30"($7 a yard)
1 sharpie or marker
1 box cutter or some scisscrs
one can of spray fabric glue($7 a can, elemers spray glue works best)
1 iron
1 quarter($0.25)
1 old t-shirt
1 yard stick or measuring tape

First u need to messure out the fabric and the poyerster fabric. The material should be about at least 28x28 and the padding at least 30x30, just to give yourself some space to mess up!

Then mark ur measurements with the sharpie and cut.

Then lay the fabric down with the the smooth side face down.

Then get the spray glue, and spray the fabric.

After, lay the padding on top of the fabric, smooth out an wrinkles. An let dry for like 30 min.

Now measure out on the mat 26x26, then cut off the excess material an pading.

(This step is optional) get a iron and heat it to cotton. Then lay the t- shrit on the paded side, just the edges, and iron over the t- shirt. No matter what!!! Never iron the pading directly! It melts and sticks to the iron! It's a pain to get off!

Ok, now that your done, just make sure ur cut a stright, and if u want to have round corners, just take the quarter and outline on each quarter. And cut.

That's it guys, if you want to skip the hassle, I can make u one for $40 each.

Yeah, it would not wash well for a number of reasons (including the usually pretty weak cloth backing).

Props to you, sir! I was trying to figure out why Wikipedia wasn't giving me any hits for it.

Additional Comment:

Remember that spellground mats aren't felt, so while a felt mat might definitely be cool and functional, it's not really what OP is aiming for.

The actual spellground is made from a really expenive microfiber, that u have o custom order from a textile company. And you have to at least buy 10 yards at $85 a yard, and then u still have to buy and glue your own pading

Additional Comment:

I'm working on more playmats, different colors!

It's some kind of Velvet/Felt kind of material I think.

Additional Comment:

Go to JoAnn's Fabrics or Fabrixx.

The irony of taking about this on a forum for an expensive card game is hilarious.

I completly agree with you. It is insane to spend even 50+ dollars on a cloth mat.

But dropping the same amount of money on ONE card is perfectly sane.

It'd still be cheaper than the spellground mats.

Like when DAD went for $300+ when it first came out.

Then again, each DAD can be worth more or less.

That depends on how you define "cheaper". The materials would be, but the time investment would be significantly more expensive-I used to get paid over $50 an hour to do that kind of specialized needlework.

Back on topic, though, the closest fabric anyone will probably find at Jo-Ann and ilk is either vinyl, or a heavier microsuede (This would be my recommendation, your cards and arms are going to stick to the vinyl).
I'm enjoying the visual image of Yu-Gi-Oh! players roaming the local fabric stores.

Just buy a Shamwow. That way it'll soak up your tears when you lose on bubble.
