Buy a new one. Anything by Terry Pratchett or Neil Gaiman. Pratchett is British, but his books make me forgive that flaw.

Try Matthew Reilly. He rules at writing. I've only read Temple, but that is, alone, great talent.

*nervous twitch*
. . .
But I agree, Terry Pratchett is an AWESOME author, so go read some Discworld books.
And read the His Dark Materials trilogy, if you haven't already.
As for HP, you need to read books 4 and 5 at least twice to fully appreciate them....

I'd say reread 4 and 5 once or twice, then check out some stuff by R.A. Salvatore, Elaine Cunningham, and Piers Anthony. All great authors, especially Salvatore.

Check out the Shannara series by Terry Brooks. There's a lot of installments to choose from, but they're all awesome imo.

Hey, he only said "if". No need to be so defensive.
And go read "The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-time". Good stuff.
