How important is it that you have played the MMORPG?
I've been eyeballing this TCG for a little while now, but every review of every card I see, there is always some mention or comparison to the MMORPG game. I played Warcraft 1-3, but I never got into WoW.
Do you think that playing WoW MMORPG gives you a distinct edge in quickly understanding the power of certain cards, or does it not matter?

I don't think it has much of an impact on understanding the actual game play. Though if you recognize names you know what the cards are for before to much reading. but thats only when actually opening pack.
I do believe, however, one might get a bit more sentimental value out of the card game if you played the MMO. Or in my case, annoyance when they take an awesome ingame weapon I had forever and make it a ****ty card *cough*lobotomizer*cough*

As with any card game you are at a distinct advantage having no prior knoledge or a video game that the game might be loosly tied to.
It's a card game, treat it like that, its not similar to playing a video game.
At least this is true if you are wanting to play at a competitive level. But if you treat it as just a card game yo have a much better chance at giving true evaluations of how good certain cards and combinations will be, and won't have any prior unrelevant information to sway you either way.
Might be hard to understand, but not playing the video game won't hurt you in the slightest.
Again this is just for competitive play though.

Short of getting some of the in-jokes I doubt you'll have any problems.

Well a bunch of my friends and I started to play it, and it's a hoot. I've already gotten wrecked by a Soulbinder deck, so I guess that's my intitation into the game
It's still hard to know if the card I'm choosing to play is the "best" available for the job I need filled, but I guess I'll learn as I go ^_^

If you haven't played the game, the only worry you'll have is looking foolish when everyone is laughing at Shadowstrike or trying to make you look a staff over after a Kralnor play and you don't have any idea why they're laughing.
MY BENEDICTION! IS IT A GOOD ONE?

I've never touched the video game either, and yet I enjoy the TCG pretty much. I can imagine that building a deck using the same class as your RPG character with all the abilities you know and love from the game might be thrilling, but if get to know WoW for the first time by opening boosters or starter decks, there's so much more to discover.
Plus I agree that a TCG is basically uncomparable to a video game. The only thing to help you out here are experiences in other Card Games. I played Magic and YGO, so it didn't take too long for me to familiarize with the rules and game mechanics. Apart from that, I'm simply learning through playing (although only on a casual level).
