Dark Hypno Cities Runner Up Deck (2006)
I made these notes I would like to post them before the year is out, the deck took second place in our City Championships earlier this year. Best of 3 games, I'm sorry I can't remember all the details.
Rocket Deck
Dark Tyranitar (Grind/Spinning Tail/Bite Off), Dark Hypno (Dark Link/Black Magic) Furret (Quick Change/Quick Tail Smash)
Round 1 versus Rayquaza EX/Amphoros
I remember the first game, being my first ever competitive pokemon game other than the gym. The second game I just remember as being a bit longer.
Game 1
Opened with Sentret active, benched Larvitar. In my hand D. Tyranitar, Rockets P. Ball, Scramble Energy, R Energy and a trainer.
Opponent opens with Rayquaza EX
I go first and pass, he attaches energy to Rayquaza Ex. Turn 2, P. Ball for D. Pupitar, evolve and attach the Scramble to D. Pupitar. I have the R energy and I know I can take two prizes if he kills my Sentret which poses a big threat to his Rayquaza EX. He attaches again to Rayquaza. Turn 3, I evolve to DT (but I should have waited), pass. I'm set if he kills my Sentret which he does, first attaching energy, but before putting anything else on his bench. So I move up Dark Tyranitar, attach R Energy and Bite Off for 130 damage and win the game.
"That was Fast" opponents comment
I took the second game too but can't recall much except I saw the Amphoros this time.
1-0
Round 2 Versus Manectric Electrode EX
Game 1
Opponent opens with Plusle, I open with Drowsee and Larvitar on the bench. He attaches and calls for family, I attach and do 10 damage. Turn 2, he attaches to Electrike, and calls up another Electrike and a Voltorb. Drowsee does 20 more damage to Plusle. Turn 3, he fills his bench, retreats, brings up a powered up Manectric and does 40 damage to Drowsee. I evolve to Dark Hypno, attach and Black Magic for 20 damage times the pokemon on his bench. Bye Bye. He brings up Elecrode EX and I think damages the D. Hypno but doesn't knock it out, or perhaps he didn't attack, but i'm already set with Dark Pupitar on the bench, I hit the Electrode EX hard with D. Hypno prepared to sacrifice it. Suprisingly he Energy Bombs, I take another two prizes, and he kills D. Hypno. I evolve and Spin Tail eventually killing his bench to take the last 2 or 3 prizes. The Manectric may have been an EX, I can't recall.
Game 2
He's learning and doesn't build up the bench, his deck was really fast but I still win. I evolve to Dark Pupitar and use Dark Streak with a Dark Energy attached against his weakness to do 60 damage to his Electrode EX but I don't get the flip to Paralyze it, he retreats but I have Furret on my bench, play a Warp Point, attach a second energy and Quick Tail Smash the Electrode EX for 30 damage and 2 prizes. He brings up the Manectric I Warped to the bench, and damages Furret. I love what's coming next and I Quick Tail Smash with a dice roll for 80 or nothing, get the heads and OHKO his Manectric. He brings up something else to kill my Furret and takes his second prize of the match, but he's in big trouble. I evolve to Dark Tyranitar and Grind his solitary pokemon for the win.
2-0
Round 3 Versus a Slowking/Dark Sandslash deck
By now, some of the players are showing an interest in my deck and we have a few spectators which probably caused me to make the odd mistake.
Game 1
I breeze through the first game and recall having hand full of Scramble and R Energy which I never used. I think I had the weakness in my favour.
Game 2
Once in a while my deck goes to sleep, it happened. I make a mistake early on and discard an energy on a Rocket's Mission, about 6 turns later I see my 2nd energy! I'm about a thrid of the way through my deck. I eventaully loose all Drowsee and Sentrets and can't get back, loosing with 3 prizes left.
These are long games.
Game 3, we eventually end up going to sudden death. I start with a Drowsee, I have I psychic energy, a Rocket's Pokeball, but no bench. He has a Sandslash I go first, I attach and do 10 damage. He responds by evolving his to Dark Sandslash and attaching Boost Energy and killing my Drowsee!. I pick up, but heh! he can't evolve first turn, maybe I should have called for a ruling, but we agree to reconstruct and play on. He attaches a dark energy instead to Sandshrew. I know he has the Boost so I must pull something useful to save the KO, neither of us has a bench. I evolve to Dark Hypno but alas, he takes the game with the Boost Energy
2-1
Round 4 Rayquaza EX, Charizard, Raichu/Raichu EX
Against one of my gym friends, she's seen my deck before and is one of the best players in the gym.
Game 1
I start with a Larvitar and a Dark Tyranitar in my hand plus other stuff. She sets up really fast and by the time I have Dark Tyranitar evolved, with an other Larvitar benched she has a Rayquaza EX with 6 Energy and kills my Dark Tyranitar. I pull another Larvitar and evolve to Dark Pupitar, 1 Energy attached, flip for Explosive Evolution and get it, all in vane as the Rayquaza EX does another 120, wipes out the Tyranitar and I loose pretty badly.
Game 2
Perfect, I get both Hypnos set up pretty quick, a Dark Tyranitar on the bench. Warp Points, Pokemon Retru=ievers, etc. everything goes great and I take the game.
Game 3
Still hasn't dawned on me that I should be pushing Furret up to give the Rayquaza EX more problems, but she is more experienced than me, sees the threat and picks off my Sentrets. I have another good game, it's close but I eventaully loose.
2-2
I made the last 4 and I have to play the Rayquaza EX, Charizard, Raichu/Raichu EX again.
I won that match 2-0 with some good fortune and good play, winning one game in style and the other game by default when she forgot to place her prize cards at the beginning.
I made the final but lost to a very powerful Charizard EX deck 0-2
Since then I have modified the deck and played the rest of the season with it. It has a phenominal combination attack for 1 energy with Dark Hypno active and Dark Tyranitar on the bench, dishing out 120 damage to an EX, for the flip of a coin. Furret also takes a lot of prizes for a flip.
Amazing deck with no EX, no poke bodies and no Poke Powers.
