Default Been wonderin about this for awhile...

I've thought about this before and never said anything about it...

Ok, from the books, you get no notion that people have to pay to go to Hogwarts right? I mean it never talks about tuition or anything, it just seems like a normal public school... so what i've been wondering about is, where does Hogwarts get money? How do they pay the teachers? Food? Supplies and beds and desks and all that kinda stuff?

Now one could argue that maybe house elves can magic up food, and so Hogwarts wouldn't have to buy it. But what about all the furniture and stuff for the common rooms and the classrooms and the offices. Not to mention having to build a Quidditch stadium and supply robes for all the teams. There's just a lot of things to buy and no inclination of where Hogwarts gets all the money.

I don't know maybe i'm over-analyzing but feel free to discuss.

Mr Dursly says "I'm not paying for Harry to go to that school"

Hagrid says how his parents sorted out before he was born. His tuition was already paid. So you do have to pay.

Who cares? Really I don't. Why try to impose mundane things like money and tuition in such a magical world...bottom line is it doesn't really matter now does it?

In any case, they never have to replace most of those things because they can just use magic to repair wear or damage.

Say, why do they have money in the wizarding world anyway? Couldn't someone just conjure up money if they were broke or something?

hehe well think about this...how easy would it be for wizards to counterfeit muggle money and then just use it to buy stuff that both wizards and muggles use...like food. I guess it would probably be the misuse of muggle artifacts, but it's still so easy. I just think it's funny.

Exactly! The Ministry of Magic funds all schools. Plus, I think a portion of the books and robes must go to Hogwarts. Like you know how school uniforms are always so expensive? Its because some of that money goes to the school too. And Hogwarts is the largest Wizarding School in London so Fudge would have to give a ton of money to it. And there are probably fundraisers and stuff. Just never mentioned. JK could possibly expand on this in an interview...

Hogwarts isn't in London, it's somewhere in Scotland.

I think the pupils do pay... I think GG_UK's right, and that James and Lily just sorted out the account before. Since Hagrid says Harry's name ahs been down sicne he was born, J/L probably sorted it then.

i never thought of that... that could be true... you just never hear of people talking about tuition or anything... like i'm sure the weaseley's would be struggling even more if they had to pay tuition for every kid... jeez they can hardly buy supplies for the kids as it is...

uh... maybe they got a scolarship for the kids?
Or maybe that's WHY they're struggling so much... because they've had seven kids to put through school...

I think Wizard money has some kind of anti-counterfit curse.... Just an asumption... but it would make sense.

Well, in OoP, don't forget the Galleons that Hermione made for the DA meetings. She even said something to the effect of "be sure not to spend them." This implies that she COULD have spent the false Galleons if she wanted, which in turn implies that counterfeit is completely possible. Only, it probably bares some inhumane punishment like life in Azkaban or something. =\

And Dj, that's exacly why I always assumed the Weaslys were so poor. Nothing more ever occoured to me. XD

Think about it a moment... THis school is several hundred years old, right? Most of the furniture has probably been there since it was opened, and if/when it did break, nothing a quick spell couldn't fix easily. The teachers probably live there as well, and eat the same things as the students, normally. Also, if/when the school needed something new, considering how most of the british magical population went there, they probably did pull a few strings to get things either for free, or for a reduced price. Also, it is completely posibble that there is quite a bit of government funding, dynasty scholarships, normal scholarships, and so forth. When money is required, tuition payments WERE mentioned back in the first book, and I am positive that Hogwarts (and all magical schools) make mucho money in charitable donations, just like a normal boarding school or university.

Do you know how many staff Dumbledore has to pay every week?
No, me either.

They need money for that, for food, for basic materials like parchment, etc..
They can't magic it all up, and as for the entire British magical population going there... I find that hard to believe. There are only about 40 people in each year. I'm sure the wizarding population is much higher than that would suggest.. a lot probably go to other schools (like Malfoy's father wanted him to go to Durmstrang)

I've never heard of any boarding school that doesn't charge tuition fees, so I'm pretty sure Hogwarts does too, though it might not be as high as most.

Perhaps those were real gallions that were enchanted, not fake ones... I don't really remember... But they might accidently spend one and then get caught...I don't really know... Just throwing out ideas

Well, let us not forget that Sirius mentioned something of true pure bloods being very rare. And also Muggle-borns aren't too terribly common, either.

However, there are many other schools around. But it's probably mostly devided into the region in which a person lives, much like here.

plus, with them being such good friends with dumbledore, i bet he wouldn't let them being poor stop their kids from coming to school as well...
