Default ultra rare vs ultimate rare

what's the difference between ultra rare and ultimate rare? i've seen sites that sell ultimate rares for quite a bit more than they sell the same card as an ultra rare.

The name, Atribute/Card Type and Level stars are all foil.

In addition to the extent of the foiling (e.g. Attribute and Level stars for a monster card), I would mention that the picture on the card is foiled differently than Super, Ultra, and Secret Rare cards. An Ultimate Rare has a metallic-looking foiling with relief.

i think i know what you guys mean, but i'm not quite sure yet. i have a spellbinding circle from magic rulers 1st edition. the entire card looks glossy, in the picture there's holographic material, and the card name is in shinny gold lettering. the gloss on the card is reflective. is this an ultimate rare?

Secret Rares existed up through the Ancient Sanctuary set.
Ultimate Rares were introduced in the next set, Soul of the
Duelist.

Secret Rare-LOB through AST
Ultimate Rare-SOD through SOI

Someone tell me whether I'm wrong anywhere in this post.

my suggestion is to go to a card shop and ask one of the person there to show you the difference. It's kind of hard to describe without looking at them side by side

Spellbinding Circle, as released in the Magic Ruler set, is an Ultra Rare card.
Ultra Rare cards have titles which are gold foiled and pictures that have a "holographic reflectiveness" which does not "alter" the image. It is not clear what you mean by "the entire card looks glossy".
Ultimate Rare cards were first released in the TCG with the Soul of the Duelist set. Cards in earlier sets will not be Ultimate Rare. Furthermore, the type of foiling for the pictures of Ultimate cards can "change" the look of the artwork.
(Note Hobby League cards (HL) are Parallel Rare, which is also different.)

you guys are a wealth of information. when i said that the entire card looks glossy, i mean that the front of it is covered in a semi-reflective, plastic-like material. i believe i can conclude that it is an ultra rare. also, i have never seen a foiling that allows the image to change, so i know now that i've never seen an ultimate rare. we don't really have much in the way of card shops in belize, it's hard enough just to find real cards. thanks for the replies, they helped a lot.

Ultimate Rares are a bit rarer than ultras. You have a 1 in 24 chance of getting an Ultra rare, so that would be a 1 in 96 chance of getting a particular ultra. Ultimate rares are a little rarer, because they come with a 1 in 12 chance, but since there are more of them, that increases the chance beyond 1 in 96, to about 1 in 500 ish. I could be wrong, but I'm no good in working out Probabilities.

I feel as though I need to clarify my comment "the type of foiling for the pictures of Ultimate cards can "change" the look of the artwork" in response to the remark "i have never seen a foiling that allows the image to change".
Ultimate Rare cards are variant printings with an alternate foiling of Rare, Super Rare, and Ultra Rare cards within a set. The "change" in the look of the artwork that I mentioned refers to how the picture of the Ultimate Rare card looks when compared to its non-foiled Rare or "regularly" foiled Super Rare/Ultra Rare counterpart. I did not intend to imply that the image on the Ultimate Rare changes. For example, the artwork for Swords of Revealing Light looks essentially the same for the LOB Super Rare as for the SYE common. However, the artwork for D. D. Survivor, as a non-foiled Rare, has a noticeably different appearance in its Ultimate form--even though it is clearly the same image. It is difficult to describe in words. Concerning what constitutes an Ultimate Rare, I think that you will "know it when you see it".
Regarding the glossiness of cards, this might simply be the card stock used in producing the cards--it shouldn't substantially vary by card rarity, however. I have noticed that the Japanese OCG cards are produced with a heavier, glossier card stock than the TCG cards.

On both cards the Picture is holographic and the Name is in gold. On Ultimate Rares the Level Stars and the Attribute Symbol are also shiny.

the ultamite rare cards have a reflective looking darker trap/spell/attribute sign.
also sometimes the foil has depth effects.
like on cyclone boomerang, the foil looks swirled in places.

My advise is
If you don'y get it you don't have one.
I understood as soon as I got my first one .
when you get one you'll know.

More often then not, Ultimate Rares are just cooler looking versions of Common, Super, and Ultra Rares. Basically, it ups the value of the card. Perhaps a dollar for Basic Common Rares, maybe $5 more for Ulitimate Supers, and $10 or more for Ultras.
Personally, I perfer the consept of a Secret Rare.

If you're unsure, do this:

Take card in hand, close your eyes, run your finger of choice over the picture. If you can feel the picture, you have an ultimate.
