Default Guide to Nova Grapplers V1

NOVA GRAPPLER DECK BUILDING GUIDE
Version 1.7 - EB-04 and BT-09 (at least those spoiled) Cards added. Decklists removed for now since new cards = outdated lists. Commentary removed for now.

Introduction:

Nova Grappler (one of the Big Four) is a clan based around pro wrestling. Its tactics are generally based around the use, and reuse, of counterblasts, as well as the standing of its units allowing for more than 3 attacks a turn. In addition, this is complemented by several on-hit skills that create greater pressure to guard.

do you think it would be worth it to get a few lion heats with set 2 coming out or would it be better to just stick with kaiser and Mr. Invincible, maybe do 4 invincible 3 kaiser and 2 Lion and make kaisers effect go off more.

NG deck building guide (TCG edition)

This guide caters to the TCG metagame only. If you wish to see the OCG version, refer to post #1.

Jargon List:
VG: Obviously Vanguard
RG: Rearguard
Magic Numbers: There's an article in the forums detailing on this
Vanilla: Card Jargon for "No Card Effect". Used to describe cards such as Tough Boy and King of Sword.
NG: Short for Nova Grappler (for the sake of easier typing you know :P)

Introduction:

Nova Grappler (one of the Big Four) is a clan based around an inter-galactic wrestling ring theme, but later on has references to some popular anime such as Gundam and Tenga Toppa Gurren Lagann. Its tactics are generally based around the use, and reuse, of counterblasts, as well as the standing of its units allowing for more than 3 attacks a turn.

Grade 0s:
Usually includes the trigger units and your Starting VG.

Trigger combinations (for NG)

Utility triggers (Draw/Heal)
4/0 Heals - Most decks play the maximum amount of Heal Triggers possible. They stop you from dying, they can also remove depleted damage giving you some space to use more counterblasts, a last-minute Heal activation could stop a push in its tracks. Some players eschew these for a more consistent critical count.

(example: 5 damage, your opponent is trying his best to push in the sixth. Enter the Heal Trigger, you heal, give the VG the power boost, and now your foe has only 2 attacks left and has to get pass a 15/16k/18k power guard)

4/0 Draw: This is actually quite a versatile trigger. It's good during your turn and during your opponent's turn, the extra card can be an extra 5/10k guard, be used to develop your board, and so on. The trouble however is the trigger itself gives only 5k guard, so I'd really rate that as a wild card, giving a range of 0 guard (you drew a grade 3, Draw Trigger is activated in a damage check) to 15k guard (with both cards, trigger is activated in a drive check.) Some prefer the 10k defence and will run critical/stand over that.

Offensive Triggers (Critical/Stand)

One problem that new players might face when building a deck is what combination of triggers would you put inside, especially STAND, and CRIT. both play similar roles to each other, both are equally not as useful when your foe is on the attack, etc. From experience, this depends on what build you are playing. Blaukruger builds want more critical to give their attack a bit more oomph, Asura Kaiser builds play slightly less Stand than normal builds, and so on. After that the rest is up to player preference.

STAND:

[AUTO]: When another <Nova Grappler> rides this unit, you may call this card to (RC).
[AUTO](RC): When this unit boosts, the boosted unit gets [Power] +3000 until end of that battle, and at the beginning of the end phase of that turn, return this unit to your deck, and shuffle your deck.


A common choice for Starting Vanguard, this G0 is able to help develop board presence without too much drain on your hand size early in the game. Trouble is, its effect impedes Soul Charging builds, and it does not stay for very long due to its second effect.

On the bright side, while negligible, you might see it again later on in a drive check, allowing you to effectively recycle your Stand Triggers (and its 2nd effect gives it the boosting power of an average G1 to boot), although later on in the game you might really want to keep this card in your hand since the board might have been fully developed by then, and you could use the extra 10k guard.

This card will unconditionally unflip one damage and add to your soul count, but will require a RG slot, as well as you giving up a 10k guard, for you to do so. Expect it to be used in Soul Charging builds, but its effect used sparingly.

Now, before you ask, these ain't NG cards, but help immensely in a soul charging build. NG as a clan aren't so dedicated on their soul charging other than Mr. Invincible or Red Lightning, thus requiring these cards to be splashed in if you are playing purely NG. 3 to 4 of these cards if you are playing a Soul-Charge build (and will most likely be playing defensively).

Auto:When a 《Nova Grappler》 rides this unit, you may call this card to a rear-guard circle.
Auto【R】:[CounterBlast(1), put this unit into your soul] When this unit boosts a 《Nova Grappler》 and the attack hits a Vanguard, you may pay the cost. If you do, choose a 《Nova Grappler》 rear-guard with 「Divine Beast」 in it's name and Stand it.
5000 power


This is a pretty strong choice if you include his family of Divine Beasts. It's a pretty decent pressure card, creates field presence immediately and is great overall. I might see early-game turns where you attack with 2 Black Tortoises, skim through 10 cards in your deck (and most likely pick up your Azure Dragon), stand one with Tiger's effect and quite possibly stand the other with your stand trigger and dig through another 10 (and pick up your second copy in the process). It's some pretty exciting gameplay (easy to pull off too, given its low cost) and would definitely force some early turn blocks. This is very good in a dedicated Divine Beast deck.


Grade 1s

Death Army Guy
Auto【R】: When a Grade 3 «Nova Grappler» is revealed by your Vanguard's Drive Check, Stand this Unit.


This card has above average power, and a ability that reads "G3? That means I can Attack/Boost Again, never mind that I can't block with that G3. Good for Asura Kaiser Builds that play higher than average numbers of G3s, but otherwise a staple in most NG decks. Also good with Death Army Lady, a G3 means that you have another 16k attack coming at you.

Tough Boy
8000 power


Your vanilla 8k beatstick. Its power is important as it helps reach magic numbers, with Death Metal Droid and Armored Fairy Sphira you'll hit 21000, with Ultimate Lifeform, Cosmo Lord you'll hit 21000 and beyond that if required, and 23k max with Top Gun. 3 to 4 copies in any NG deck.

This card has above average power, and has an ability that allows you to reuse your counterblasts. It's definitely a card to go for later in the game when your damage could be depleted. A neat little trick would be to activate Genocide Jack's counterblast to release its restraint, and then calling it to unflip the damage.

Screamin' and Dancin' Announcer, Shout

Good power level, and is one of the few draw/filter engines that this deck has. It's good if you are starting 1st as well, you can ride this and use its effect to help set up.
Twin Blader
[Auto]: [Choose 1 《Nova Grappler》 from your hand and discard it] When this Unit is called to the Guardian Circle, you may pay the cost. If paid, during that battle, your 《Nova Grappler》 doesn't get hit.
6000 power


A staple in any NG deck, Twin Blader here is what we call a "Null Guard" or a "perfect defense", etc. You'll be playing those if you have them. WARNING: Not meant for attacking with!

Queen of Heart
[AUTO](RC):When this unit boosts a unit named "King of Sword", the boosted unit gets [Power] +4000 until end of that battle.


This card turns a vanilla 10k beater into a 20k vanilla magic number hitter, forcing out 15k guard if your opponent's VG has 10k power. However, against 11k or, god forbid, 13k power VGs, this card seems underwhelming, and the effect can only be applied to King. Play 4 of that alongside 4 copies of King for best results.
Divine Beast, Scarlet Bird
Auto【V/R】:When this unit's attack hits a vanguard and you have a 《Nova Grappler》 Vanguard, look at the top 5 cards of your deck, search for a card named 「Divine Beast, Azure Dragon」, show it to your opponent and add it to your hand. Put the remaining cards to the bottom of the deck in any order.


2nd in line of the Divine Beast Family. At first the 6000 power might seem pretty weak to you, but this is due to its very powerful effect, which lets you dig through a tenth of your deck (and set up your Grade 3 ride or Persona Blast action). This is very good in multiples, and will shine brightest in the earlier turns where your opponent will not be too inclined to block.

Almighty Reporter
Auto [R]: During a battle when this unit boosts a 《Nova Grappler》, when the attack hits a Vanguard, you may return this unit to your hand.


This card has an interesting effect. You can drop it on the 1st few turns to give your attacks some force, then retain it as a guard and maintain a good hand size (you can even drop it for Twin Blader and Shout). This is good for NG, which is an aggro deck that often overextends your hand. I'd include some copies if I can find the space.

It has average power, and when paired with Death Army Guy, will draw out 10k guards from opponents. Playing this along side its male counterpart and Kaiser could lead to turns where we manage a full 4-unit stand, which is pretty devastating. Another staple in most NG decks.

Genocide/Brutal Jack

[AUTO](VC):When this unit is boosted by a <Nova Grappler>, this unit gets [Power] +5000 until end of that battle.


11000 power is quite a lot (with the right support, this could reach Magic Numbers without any problem and it's great to pair with Stand Triggers), and the counter blast cost to release its restraint is easily paid for.

NGM Prototype
Auto: When this Unit intercepts, and you have a 《Nova Grappler》 Vanguard, during that battle, this Unit's Shield gains +5000.
8000 power


Oh look, it's a 10k guard that you can actually attack with. It's fantastic on that regard, but 8000 power is really quite underwhelming, from experience. Pair with Tough Boy so that you can at least draw out 10k guards against 11k power VGs.

Magician Girl, Kirara
Auto 【V/R】 : [Counter Blast (2)] When this Unit's attack hits, and you have a 《Nova Grappler》 Vanguard, you may pay the cost. If so, draw 1 card.
9000 power


With its average power, the draw ability lets it stand apart from the other grade 2s available, netting me a card to guard with or develop my board if it connects. Good pressure unit overall.

Humpty Dumpty
[AUTO]: When this unit is placed on (RC), if you have a <Nova Grappler> vanguard, choose a card from your damage zone, and turn it face up.
9000 power


This hungry little critter is essentially a Clay Doll Mechanic stapled onto a 9k G2 body. It's free, it's unconditional, but sadly, it's only one-time use, and so may not be suited for longer games. It is however, something to consider.

King of Sword
10000 power


This is your basic vanilla G2 with a ton of power, intercept ability, and nothing else to offer. It is however, a pretty strong vanilla, and with sufficient support (READ: Making absolutely sure that you pair it with a Queen of Hearts), it can be a valuable asset to your attacking force.

Divine Beast, Black Tortoise
uto【V/R】:When this unit's attack hits a vanguard and you have a 《Nova Grappler》 vanguard, look at the top 5 cards of your deck, search for a card named 「Divine Beast, Azure Dragon」, show it to your opponent and add it to your hand. Put the remaining cards to the bottom of the deck in any order.
8000 power


Scarlet's bigger brother. 8000 power is frail and difficult to maintain on the field, but it does its job best in the early turns in any case. This along with Scarlet Bird gives the Divine Beast deck a lot of consistency, very strong early game pressure and smooth riding. Tough Boy is your best friend here, to help push the bar high enough for you to keep the pressure on your opponent.

Marvelous Honey
Auto【V/R】: When this unit's attack hits a vanguard, if you have 4 or more other 《Nova Grappler》 rear-guards, draw a card.
7000 power


This guy has a good effect, but sadly does not have the power to use it. It's only good in the early game, but you have to blow out your hand and you definitely have better cards to play.


Grade 3s

Asura Kaiser
[CONT](VC/RC):If you do not have another <Nova Grappler> vanguard or rear-guard, this unit gets [Power] -2000.
[AUTO](VC):When this unit's drive check reveals a grade 3 <Nova Grappler>, choose one of your rear-guards, and [Stand] it.
11000 power


This card has the power of a Genocide/Brutal Jack, and it can potentially stand up to 2 of its allies if you Drive Check a Grade 3 (which is usually something undesirable, you can't guard with it and your opponent knows that). Also, it has 11000 power, which is generally easy to defend with. Quite a powerful card, and 4 of in a Dedicated Deck built around it, and 2~4 of in a deck that's not.

Mr. Invincible
[AUTO](VC): At the beginning of your main phase, [Soul-Chage 1], choose a card from your damage zone, and turn it face up.
[AUTO](VC/RC): [Soul-Blast 8 & Counter-Blast 5] When this unit's attack hits, you may pay the cost. If you do, [Stand] all of your units.
10000 power

This is what you have been soul charging for, a chance to use its extremely powerful effect. As a side note, Mr. Invincible can activate its Megablast as a Rearguard, so using this a backing it up with another copy gives you 2 chances to activate its effect. Also easily splashed in other decks thanks to its abilities. A good all rounder card overall. Sadly, he is rather lack luster in most pure NG decks except for dedicated soul charging builds. However, it is in Hybrid builds that he shines - his ability to unflip 1 damage each turn fuels some really powerful counterblast combos, more on that below on sample decklists.

Lion Heat
Auto 【V】: [[[Counter Blast]] 2 ] When this Unit's attack hits a Vanguard, you may pay the cost. If paid, choose 1 of your 《Nova Grappler》 Rearguards and stand it.
Auto 【R】: [ Counter Blast 2 ] When this Unit's attack hits a Vanguard, you may pay the cost. If paid, choose 1 of your Grade 1 or lower 《Nova Grappler》 Rear Guards and stand it.
10000 power


This card is actually pretty versatile, helping a set up a 4th boosted attack as a rearguard, or doing it by himself as a Vanguard. It's a good pressure unit that sadly, finds itself in the wrong place.

Divine Beast, Azure Dragon
Continuous【V/R】: If you have a vanguard or rear-guard which is not a 《Nova Grappler》, this unit gets Power -2000.
Auto【V】:[Choose a card named 「Divine Beast, Azure Dragon」 from your hand and discard it] When this unit's attack hits a Vanguard, you may pay the cost. If you do, choose up to 2 rear-guards and Stand them.
11000 power


The Nova Grappler clan finally got its Persona Blaster Card. Good thing about it, it doesn't use any counter blasts and will create a lot of pressure on your opponent to block, and you can have 1 more boosted attack or 2 unboosted attacks (this is fantastic if you got stand triggers, you can potentially stand all of your units) making this a pretty versatile and strong ability. This is the card you definitely want to ride unless you want to lose all that momentum you build up from your ideally aggressive "Divine Beast" early game. The trouble is, it has to hit the Vanguard in order to use that effect, so it's not really good in the long run where your opponent should be at 5 damage by the end game, rendering its ability useless. I would definitely pack some cards to help cycle the excess copies in the late game if possible, such as Twin Blader or Shout. PLAY NO LESS THAN 4 COPIES OF THAT CARD IN YOUR DECK TO MAXIMISE THAT EFFECT (and the effects of its Divine Beast brethren, come to that).

Moai the Great
Auto [V/R]: When this unit get boosted by a Nova Grappler unit, this unit gets POWER +2000 during this battle.
10000 power


This is a very good choice for those who prefer using their counterblasts (which I normally use for Death Metal Droid) for something else. Hits the 20k mark with Tough Boy support, but sadly loses out on a Stand Trigger (since it has to be boosted to get the extra 2k). In TCG however, where Droid hasn’t made an appearance, this guy makes a good choice in a G3 slot over Lion Heat or Mr. Invincible because he is consistent.

Ultimate Lifeform, Cosmo Lord
Activate【V】: [Choose 1 of your «Nova Grappler» Rearguards, and Rest it] During that turn, this Unit gains +3000 Power.
10000 power


Admittedly, I haven't played with this card, but it can easily touch 21k, with Tough Boy boosting, after just 1 activation. As I've said above, a good card to pair it with is Meshrad Roid, which can Stand over and over again for just 1 Counterblast, allowing it to reach up to a whopping 25000 power before boosting.

Again, this is a rough idea I had and left here as a starting point. You are trying to dig for extra copies of Azure Dragon for his Persona Blast, so the idea of this build is to create pressure on the opponent to guard by attacking aggressively. 4 of each Divine Beast to start off, although I might cut back on Scarlet Bird given his low attack power. Some high powered units to take advantage of Azure's Persona Blast, since like Asura Kaiser, it does not give any extra power to the units. Toss in staples and there you go.

This build would be the Soul Charging variant of this deck. For this build I made it a mixed clan deck, adding in several cards from the often neglected Megacolony clan. Megacolony works well with this build for several reasons:

- its lockdown effects allow the player to buy a little more time to set up Mr. Invincible's Megablast
- the used up counterblast can be easily recovered using Mr. Invincible's effect.

Hell Spider makes a decent backup VG since he will most likely get the 3k boost (NOTE: A little-known thing about Hell Spider is that he gets +3k power as a VG if all your opponent's units are at rest, which lets you hit the 21k magic number mark with Tough Boy Support.) In addition, like his grade 1 and 2 brethren, he also packs that nifty lockdown effect.

Well, while considering that Voidmaster's counterblast is really quite cheap, I feel that I must mention something. It would be more desirable for the Opponent to guard against this attack and take his chances with the other units. Still, it puts some pressure on the opponent to guard and let off the pressure against other, more useful rearguards. This is rather interesting, and makes Voidmaster quite a good rearguard that attempts to chip down the foe's defenses, quite like a ninja indeed (degozaru. *ahem*). Have you play-tested it yet? Would like to hear some feedback on this.

Regarding Shout, I'd try to run more copies of him since you will want to get rid of surplus Grade 3s that cannot be used to guard unless you use it for your null guards. No sense running 2 copies, if you want my opinion.

Also, don't you think that between Mr. Invincible, Humpty Dumpty, Clay Doll Mechanic, and Red Lightning, that you have too much card unflipping in a deck that is light on counterblasts? (Other than Voidmaster, Brutal Jack and Kirara) Granted, you want to have some unflipped damage to threaten the opponent with, but this is a bit too much if you know what I mean. The slots for Clay-Doll could go to more copies of Shout, which can let you hunker down and refine your draws if you are experiencing an attrition war.

I'm not too sure about NGM Prototype (which is rather underwhelming on its own and not a very good candidate for Asura Kaiser's effect) however, have you play-tested a playset (4-of) of King of Sword and Queen of Hearts?

Nit-picking aside, I'd like to hear some feedback regarding your build. Might you be able to leave some comments regarding your play-testing for this deck? Also, I've posted an idea for an Asura Kaiser Build above, perhaps you might take some ideas from there or critique my build (like from where can I improve for example, what you liked about it, what you don't like about it...)?

I know it's asking a lot but I'm really glad that my guide has some small and humble role in influencing more people to play this clan, and would really want to improve it.

EDIT: Looking back on this, I forgot to add in one thing: Voidmaster would screw up your grade ratio and will not contribute to Asura Kaiser's effect, since you will need to drive check a Nova Grappler Grade 3 for it to activate.

Rutile is really rather lackluster in testing. Most times I wanted Kaizer as my VG instead due to the free ability and easier to defend body. You also really want Death Army Ladies and Guys to set up multiple stands in one shot, so you'll be focusing less on counterblasts really.

Megacolony from what I hear has good synergy with Nova Grappler, since if you can spam its "lockdown" counterblast skill (thanks to damage unflipping effects courtesy of NG) every other turn it can be really good, I guess.

good guide but not usuable for most north american players because we are not getting sets 3,4,5 and TD 3 for a while. On another note what do u think about the divine beasts in set 6?

By far the best family of cards nova grapplers have gotten since the Death Army people. I imagine they'll be the new standard since not only do they allow a lot of consistency, but also a lot of advantage.

GREAT ARTICLE! It was a huge help since I was going back and forth between OTT and NG; but I feel like NG is on par with OTT now, and will surpass them in the coming sets.

I was hoping you could throw out a series 1/2 deck list? What I am really thinking of doing is going with Mr. Invincible (only level 3), using Rock the Wall/Redshoe Milly to have my soul ready for his ability turn 3. What would be your recommendation on this?

Yup That is almost exactly how I run it nice build Drk Wizard. I just can't shed my queens though I just love swinging for 20k every time with king so I run 2 shouts and 3 Clay Dolls

@max1mmus: Just wondering, why Cray Soldier? I understand that it stands if its boosted attack was a success, but 4k power isn't a lot, you know (you'll have to put this with Asura or Jack to force out 10k guard from 10k power vanguards).

This is just my opinion but I don't like Cray Soldier and I don't like Queen of Hearts. I would drop them for the Twin Bladers and one each of Shout and Claydoll. Claydoll is a 7k booster that lets you continue to use Jack/Heat/Kirara and Shout lets you dump cards you don't need to try and draw useful stuff.

Definitely not big on Dumpty as Claydoll does the same thing but fits in better as a G1 booster than Dumpty does as a front row beater. I would drop both of them for another Kirara and King.

Again, this is all just preference, YMMV.

Thinking later on, what should i take out for x3 twin blader when i get the money for them.

+ 2 Shout
+ 1 Queen of Hearts, + 1 King of Sword. (I'd make this change if you are in the North America metagame, seeing that 20k beatsticks are invaluable currently, and 4-ofs would make it easier for you to assemble them. I'd phase them out for Death Army Guy and Lady when booster set 3 comes out.)
- 3 Clay Doll Mechanic
- 2 Humpty Dumpty
+ 1 Magician Girl Kirara/NGM Prototype
2 Spaces left for your Twin Blader. I'll leave that last space to you.

Well, you obviously need to start with White Tiger and max on Black Tortoise. I'd either go with 0 or 4 Scarlet Bird (useful skill, terrible power that always needs a boost to hit, and you don't want to put two G1s in the same column...). The lineup definitely needs Kirara to pressure the opponent into guarding more; if they do, they become less capable of defending against Azure Dragon's attack, and you know where that leads. More Kirara. lol

Max on Tough Boy. I'd rather play Clay-doll than Queen (he's at least 7K for everyone else, and not a bad secondary ride).

Lion Heat is probably a waste of time (though there is novelty in using his skill to stand his booster, then using Azure Dragon to stand him). With all the searching you aim to be doing, I'm not sure if Asura will be working at maximum capacity, but it's probably worth keeping.
