Thats because no one knew any better. base set gave us, Hulcus, merfolk, terror pit, squito, ghost touch, tornado flame, crimson hammer, etc. all very control oriented stuff that would have wrecked the competition back then.

Merfolk not so much at all until sets 2 and 3 but I see your point.

Bks will be BKs. I'm sure the base set will be full of 1 for 1s and some +1s and +2s.

I think game play info won't be released for at least 3 weeks or so. Mainly because so far all they have released is just civilisation information and other filler rubbish every week. If they continue that pattern, game play information will be a while away.

Don't get me wrong, there were lots of good control cards; but it seems to me (I only own cards from DM-01 to DM-03, so this is where I'm coming from) that aggro was a much better strategy.

DM is coming back? I never thought I would see the day. I used to be really, really good at the older game. I placed top 8 at the 2005 Nats in LA, I used to be very well known in the DM community. I'd like to see some of the old pros come back.

Glad to see another new/old face around! Are you planning on getting into the Kaijudo competitive scene with us?

I used to a regular on there haha is the site still up? Though I spent most of my time in the DuelZone forums and chatroom, was pretty well known on there and locally. If this is game is similar to that of the original DM there's a chance I'll pick this game up

While it hasn't been officially confirmed, chances are it's going to be very, very similar.

This is what I'm hoping for, it's gonna be a nice change from Yugioh which has essentially turned into a game where you need a wad of cash to stay competitive. Don't even get me started about their new banlist... lol anyways I digress, I hope some information about the actual card game gets posted on the website soon

What was your username? Some names I remember are Knives, Cecilbill, Mohammed and the guy that would translate all the sets himself.

Pretty sure I used same name I use here "Morph3us". I recongize all those names, think I even traded with Knives once haha. Cecillbill was suppose to do a deck profile on a deck that I won a 5 civs with but she never got back to me, and I use to duel mohammed online all the time. I think the guy that did the translations went under the name ryoma echizen or something like that

Yeah that was definitely his name. I'm pretty sure he migrated here after the site went down, but under a different name.
About me though, I started playing literally day one. I was at a local mall when I was in 7th grade and saw the massive adverts for Duel Masters. Bought a ton of Base Set boosters and the rest was history. My local shop stopped supporting it after Epic Dragons, which was when I stopped playing competitively.
I use to run five color Bliss Totem control deck with heavy search (crystal memory, etc.), phal, boomerang comet and merfolk.

This sentence is the whole reason I've gotten back into Duel Masters/Kaijudo. I was a very low-level competitive Magic player, but every month I grew more and more tired of the same decks floating around....then the new set would launch and there would be one or two new decks, but not much variance. Duel Masters allows for a much more diverse group of decks to be competitive compared to Magic.
Well that and the fact that even an entry-level competitive standard deck costs over $150 and will be rotated out in a year or two. The Modern format doesn't rotate, but the deck costs are even steeper.

The reason MTG/YGO are so expensive boils down to simple supply and demand. in essence, if we want Kaijudo to be a successful game eventually the prices will mimic those of the other brands.
This is also the reason DM was relatively cheap compared to those games; it didn't last nearly as long.

That all depends on how the game fares. When I started playing back in oh..2002-2003, it was really dead in my area. I really, REALLY had to promote the game. Luckly my local shop provided free starter decks (the one that came with Pyrofighter Magnus) to people willing to sit down and learn how to play. I would teach people, give them basic cards from my collection (Death Smokes, Crimson Hammers, etc etc) to help with their deck. I ended up turning it into a really big thing, two shops in my area held Tournament of the 5 Civ events once I got the game really booming. I played up until the 2005 nats in LA, I lost to the guy that ended up winning it due to a huge play mistake on my part.
It really depends on if the game is going to be the same..and how well people take to it in my area. If nobody plays, I probably won't either.

The money thing isn't really an issue to me, and I know the basics of supply and demand in card games. My main issue with Magic is the lack of diversity in standard, at least at my local stores. Everyone net decks the last week's top 8 list.

Duel Masters was very popular at my school, but I had the same problem when it came to actual game-store participation. I'm hoping Kaijudo does well enough for me to warrant switching over completely from Magic. I know that most Magic players here aren't going to get into it, but I know a lot of the YGO players are looking for something new.

I went on realms occasionally and so did Carl (earthp0w3r).. I think he went on there more than I did. For anyone who didn't already know, check out the channel link in my sig (shameless advertisement).
I'm looking forward to playing kaijudo competitively. And honestly a $150 deck sounds kinda cheap compared to what I'm used to, I'd have no problem with that.

That's without non-basic lands. For a playset of any of the Scars lands it's like $100 :|
