Yu-Gi-Oh: A story without a title! - Chapter 1

Matt was standing on the southern corner of the dueling arena known as KaibaDome. His opponent, a black-haired teenager about a year older than him was standing on the opposite side of the arena, staring at him. Between them two grids, with two rows of five rectangular boxes each, reminishent of a duel mat, were drawn on the arena's floor. Matt's heart was pounding. This was the first time he dueled in an official event event like this, the first time he dueled in an arena, the first time he dueled with a duel disk. His mind travelled to the first time he played Yu-Gi-Oh, back in Elementary School.

"Hey Spyro, what's that you are holding?" Matt asked his friend Spyros, pointing to the pile of brown backed cards in Spyros' hand.

"Ah, that's a deck of Yu-Gi-Oh cards" Spyros replied.

"Yu-Gi-what?" Matt asked, obviously confused.

"Yu-Gi-Oh. It's a game with collectible cards. Of the cards, some are monsters you control and use to attack your opponent and their monsters, and others are spell and trap cards that help you or do bad things to the opponent." Spyros replied

"Sounds interesting" Matt said.

Matt opened his eyes. The arena in front of him was now llit by huge lights from the edges of the stadium. His opponent pressed a button on his Duel Disk, activating it. Matt did the same. After the two parts of the Disk's platform joined together and the light on the disk switched on, Matt moved his left hand on top of his left wrist, where his deck was sitting, held by the Disk. Matt pulled the top five cards of his deck, while his opponent did the same. "DUEL" both of them shouted.

The LP meters on the Duel Disks and the big screen over the arena activated.

"The first move is mine!" shouted the black-haired boy. "I draw. I summon Destiny Hero Defender in defence mode." the boy said as a stout, golem-like grey creature jumped out of the card's projection and kneeled in a defensive stance.[100/2700]
"Next I throw two cards face-down and end my turn", he said, as two enlarged holograms of two brown backed cards appeared in front of the boy's feet and behind the golem-like creature.

"My turn then! I draw!" Matt said and drew the top card of his deck.

"So, are you gonna show me how's this game played?" Matt asked Spyros.

"Sure I am. Let's go to that bench and I'll teach you" Spyros replied. Both of them walked across the schoolyard, towards a bench at the edge of the yard. "Well, let's start with the basics" Spyros said as they sat on the bench, leaving enough space between them to place the cards. "The objective is to reduce your opponent's lifepoints to zero. Each player starts with 8000 lifepoints. In order to do that, you must attack with your monsters."

"Sounds easy" Matt thought.

"Each player needs a deck of 40 to 60 cards to play. So, here, take my second deck."

"What, you have two decks?!" Matt asked surprised.

"Yea, I have it in case I want to play with someone that hasn't got a deck." Spyros said as he handed the pile of cards to Matt.

"First you need to shuffle your deck" , Spyros said as he shuffled his deck. Matt did the same.

"Now, draw the top five cards of your deck" he said, and both of them drew 5 cards.

"Wow, they're beautiful!" Matt said with excitement.

"I will play first to show you. Each turn it's divided into phases. At the begining of your turn, you must draw a card. That's the draw phase. If your deck runs out of cards and you can't draw a card you lose the game. Got it?" Spyros said as he drew a card. Matt nodded in agreement.

Matt looked his hand of six cards. He had been using this deck for years, and, although he had made many changes throughout the years, most of the cards in his deck were with him for a long time. Each card in that deck was his favorite. He knew exactly what to do. "Let's do this!" he said and placed a card on his duel Disk.

"Then it's the Standby Phase" Spyros continued.

"Standby phase?" Matt asked, a bit perplexed.

"Yea. There are cards that activate during this phase. But unless a card mentions it you won't use it. Got it?"

Matt nodded again. This game seemed more perplexed than he originally thought, but at the same time, it was more interesting. "Go on" he said.

"Ok. After that it's the Main Phase. During this phase, you can summon Monsters, play Spell cards and set Trap cards. Let's start with the monsters. The monsters are these cards with the yellow or orange border. They have attack and defence points. The value on the left is attack and the value on the right is defence. In battle, the monster with higher attack wins. To summon a monster, you place it either vertically and face up, in attack mode, horizontially and face up, in defense mode, or, finaly, horizontially and face down, in face down defense mode, that's also called a set." he said, as he placed a card with a yellow background depicting a vicious-looking purple dragon, shifting it depending on the position he described, finally leaving it face-up and vertically, in attack mode. "I summon Koumori Dragon!" He said. [1500/1200]

"I think I got it" Matt replied.

"I summon D.D. Survivor in Attack mode!" Matt said, as a blond man with his whole body covered in brown torn cloth sheets jumped out from his card's picture and stood in front of Matt, facing the golem-like creature. [1800/200]

"Most monsters can be normal summoned. But to summon a monster whose level is greater than four you must tribute monsters to summon it"

"Whoa! Whoa! Wait! What's a level?" Matt interupted.

"Yea, you're right. I forgot to mention it." Spyros apologized "See these stars under the card's name?" Matt nodded "It's called a level. A monster that has up to four stars can be summoned without tribute, but to summon a monster with more stars you need to tribute other monsters. That's one tribute for a level five or six monster, and two tributes for a level seven or higher monster."

"I see. So that's why people don't just put 40 level 8 3000 attack monsters in their deck." Matt said, mostly to himself.

"Exactly. But bear in mind that some monsters can't just be normal summoned; they must be summoned by special means. Anyway, let's go to spell and trap cards. Spell cards are usually played and then sent to the Graveyard." Spyros replied.

"Graveyard?"Matt jolted at the new word.

"It's the place destroyed cards and used cards go. When a monster is destroyed, it's sent there; so are spell and trap cards when they are used." Spyros replied to Matt's question. "Anyway, spell cards are the green- bordered ones. You play them, do what they say, and place them in the graveyard."

"What they say?! And if it says 'Remove your clothes'? What will I do then?" Matt said shocked.

Spyros laughed. "Don't worry, the cards say things to do in-game, like destroy a monster, draw a card, and so."

"Then ok..." Matt said relieved. "And what are the trap card you mentioned?"

"They're the purple-bordered ones. You must first set them, and you can activate them starting from your opponent's next turn. They usually do something unexpected to the opponent, such negate their attacks or destroying their monsters."

"They sound powerful" Matt exclaimed.

"Too bad!" the black-haired boy replied. "I activate my Trap! Bottomless Trap Hole! I can activate it when you summon a monster with 1500 or more attack. It's destroyed and removed from play!" he said as one of the cards in front of him flipped, revealing a purple bordered card that showed a green humanoid creature being sucked in a red hole with purple ghost-like faces around it, watching the creature in pain.

A hole similar to the one in the card's image appeared under D.D. Survivor and sucked him in. Matt just smiled and slid a card into his Duel Disk. "I throw a face-down" he said.

"I set a card and end my turn." Spyros said.

"All right! I'm up!" Matt said in joy and excitement. He looked at his cards. four of them were yellow monster cards, and the other two were green spell cards. He immediatly picked the strongest moster, and placed it vertically in front of him. It depicted a white humanoid monster whith four hands. "I summon Gene-Warped Warwolf!" said Matt as he read the monster's name aloud.[2000/100]

"Hmm, good move." Spyros responded to Matt's move. "But this is a better move." he said as he flipped his face-down card. "I activate Bottomless Trap Hole! Now the monster you summoned is destroyed and removed from play!" he said.

"Wait, what is 'remove from play'?" Matt stoped him, more confused than ever.

"Oh, yeah, some cards can send a card out of the game instead of sending it to the graveyard. Cards removed from play are usually left there for the whole game, unless a card allows them to return." Spyros answered to Matt's question.

Matt removed D.D. Survivor's card from his Duel Disk and placed it in a special compartment under the Disk, designed for this purpose. Then, he picked three cards from his hand and slid them in his duel disk. "I throw three face-downs." He said while three enlarged brown-backed cards appeared in front of him.

"I end my turn. And, thanks to D.D. Survivor's effect, if he is removed from play while he's face-up on the field, he's special summoned to the field at the end phase." he said, as he placed back D.D. Survivor's card on the Disk. At the same time, the hole from before opened in the air, and D.D. Survivor leaped from inside.

"No way!" the other boy exclaimed. "Well, it doesn't matter. I'll get rid of him this turn. Once and for all! My turn! I draw!"

"I'll have fun seeing you trying. I activate my face-down card! Macro Cosmos!" Matt said, passion burning in his eyes, as the middle of his three cards flipped, revealing a purple bordered card. In its picture, three white spheres formed a triangle joined by three white lines. Two smaller spheres were the one left and the other right from the lower circle of the triangle, joined by white lines and a great red and white sphere was over the two higher spheres , while all shperes where united by large circles. Behind the pattern, a man with wide arms and grey hair covering his phase was standing as if he controlled the spheres. After Matt activated the card, the pattern of the spheres appeared in the sky. "Now every card sent to the graveyard will be removed from play instead" he said with a proud note on his voice.

"We will see about that. I activate Mystical Space Typhoon! Now your Macro Cosmos is destroyed!" the other boy said, as the said card's hologram appeared, and a typhoon kicked up from the card and directed itself on Matt's Macro Cosmos card's hologram, witch was shred to pieces, while the pattern disappeared. "How about that?" he mocked Matt.

"Grrrr..." was Matt response.

"Next, I switch Destiny Hero - Defender to attack mode." said the boy, as he turned Defender's card vertically on his Disk. At the same time, Defender stood up and took a fighting stance. [100/2700]

"Next, I activate 3 Meteor of Destruction cards. And each of them deals you 1000 damage!" He slid the three green bordered cards in his duel disk, and their holograms appeared. Each of them had a large yellow fire ball on their picture. Then, a from each card a yellow fire ball launched towards Matt, who braced himself for the hit. The meteors hit him harder than he expected, and he was blown backwards.

"Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!" he screamed as he took the blast.

"And that's just the begining! I activate the spell Shield & Sword! Now each monster on the field has their attack swapped with their defense!" a hologram of green bordered card appeared, depicting a knight in bronze armor holding a shield in one hand and a sword in the other, with arrows that went from the shield to the sword and from the sword to the sheld.

D.D. Survivor: [200/1800]
Destiny Hero - Defender [2700/100]

"Finally, I activate my face-down card, Trap Stun! Now no Traps can be activated for the rest of the turn!" He shouted with a triumph tone, as his face-down card flipped revealing another purple-bordered card, showing Trap cards being hit by flames. "Now Defender, FINISH OFF THAT NUISANCE!" he shouted aggresively, as the golem-like creature charged forward at D.D. Survivor, who tried to punch back, but the golem's body was very hard, and eventually he was shattered to pieces by the golem's arm's.

"Argh... I'm sorry buddy" whispered Matt as he slid D.D. Survivor's card in the Disk's graveyard slot.

"I end my turn!" shouted the black haired boy, clearly celebrating his victory.

"I need to make a good move if I want to win... Let's hope I get a good card..." whispered Matt. "MY TURN! I DRAW!" he shouted, andd picked the top card of his deck.
Matt looked at the card he drew...

Just because the start is generic, doesn't mean the story will be.

A good start mapsal! I think the black-haired boy should have a name as the name of Matt was displayed in the air, so should his opponents name have been.

Other than that, it's a solid start to the story.

Not sure of a name for it, but in what era is it set? Before Xyz?

Dimensional, thanks for the good review. Indeed, the story has a specific plot. As for the black-haired boy, his name will be revealed in the next chapter! And finally, the story is set after 5ds but before Zexal.

Anyway, my idea for the title is "YuGiOh: Twisted Dimensions". What's your opinion about it?

After 5D's but before Zexal seems a popular time. Having not watched Zexal I don't know when in our time it is supposedly set, though I'm guessing its 2100. I'm excited to read more! mapsal, did you get my pm regarding my fanfic earlier?
