I don't understand the rules for generic teams
I know the rules for non generic teams but I don't understand the rules for generic. How many pieces are required to get the bonuses?

The rules are still the same. It's all based on their keywords.
Generics become an issue if you're playing by Highlander rules, where duplicates aren't allowed (multiple Con Mans, two 150 point Supermans etc.).

He's speaking of named keywords (JLA, Avengers, etc.) versus generic keywords (Animal, Police, etc.).
I'm just going to copy and paste an email I sent to my players this past week.
In he past couple of weeks I've noticed that some people have had some misunderstandings on what it takes to meet the requirements to be considered a themed team. It's understandable. The rules for this changed last summer, and most of the misunderstandings I've seen are situations where a person did not have a themed team under these current rules, but that same team would have been a legal themed team under those old rules.
Anyway, I wanted to take a minute to review this. I know you all put a great deal of thought into making some very creative teams. It has pained me to break the news that what was thought to be a themed team was not. After putting in the effort and creativity, I can only imagine that those receiving this information must also have been saddened.
The big difference is that everything is based on 300 point intervals now.
As always, you basically only need to do two things to get the themed team:
- Make sure that every figure on the team has the chosen keyword
- Make sure that you meet or exceed the minimum number of figures required for that keyword type for the game's build total.
For named keywords (JLA, X-Men, etc.) you need to have a minimum of 2 characters for every 300 points of the build.
For generic keywords (Spy, Psychic) you need to have a minimum of 3 characters for every 300 points of the build.
(Note that bystanders neither help nor hurt the creation of a themed team.)
The number of Probability Control uses that you are awarded has changed last summer, too. While you used to get a number of PCs based on the number of figures on the team, you now get a number of PCs based on every 300 points of the build.
For named keywords you receive 2 uses of Probability Control for every 300 points of the build.
For generic keywords you receive 1 use of Probability Control for every 300 points of the build.
The determination of the bonus to the initiative roll remains the same as it always has been. You get a +X to your initiative roll where X is the number of figures on your team (excluding bystanders). (More on initiative roll is to come in a future message.)
Hopefully this chart will help. It shows the minimum number of figures needed as well as the number of PCs you will receive.
