Default Gagaga Magician + Skill Drain.

I was talking about this in the anime discussion, but I figured I'd make a thread for more discussion about it.

I know this card isn't out yet in the US, but the ruling wouldn't really make a difference.

So, we have gagaga magician:
Quote:
Gagaga Magician
DARK/4/Spellcaster/Effect
Once per turn, you can declare a number from 1 to 8 ) and have this card's Level become equal to the selected number. You can control only 1 "Gagaga Magician". This card cannot be used as a Synchro Material Monster.
1500/1000

Some people say it's 1 to 3, but it clearly says 1 to 8 on the cards text.

This card would be SOOO broken if you could use it for synchro. However, what would happen if you declared it to be a level 6, then activated Skill Drain

It would negate the effect that says the card can't be used as synchro summon (I assume ) however would the level drop back down to level 4?

The card says you can declare a level and it becomes equal to that. So Skill Drain would prevent you from declaring a level once per turn, but if you already did that, the cards level would be 6, not 4, and blocking the effect shouldn't turn it back to 4?

Since it doesn't say something like:
"declare a level between 1 and 8 and this cards level is equal to that until the end of your turn"

His Level would go back to 4.

Also, not being able to use it for a Synchro Summon is a condition. You won't negate that.

Lastly, "Skill Drain" would not prevent you from actuating the Level change effect if it was already face-up.

Skill Drain does not prevent anything. It will negate Magician's effect and its level will revert to its original level.

Eeeh...
I thought Skill Drain doesn't negate lingering-effect.
Since it's originally an ignition-effect.

This is really just arbitrary, but numerical self-changes are always considered to apply continuously afterward.

Now I'm even more confused.

I guess that "this card can't be used for synchro" isn't an effect, so no matter what card you use, you'll never be able to synchro with it.

So if we pretend that it's an effect, and Skill Drain blocks it, some people say the level would go back, but others say Skill Drain wouldn't be able to stop that since it's an continuous effect that happened before activation, and not something like say, Stardust Dragon where it would be blocked from removing itself.?

Love the rules of this game

IMO, with gagaga magician's effect, you pick a level and gagaga becomes that level and that's it; effect applied. Skill Drain and nothing happens. his level won't revert back to 4 and he still can't be used as Synchro Material.

it's like asking if gale's target that halves a monster's atk/def will revert back if Skill Drain was used. it won't.

No, you don't want me talking ATK/DEF modifiers.

Gale is a completely different topic. As far as we know, Redshift is correct. Feel free to ask Konami, though.
