Default Character Gallery 2010 - Requests + Suggestions Welcome

So I've become a little bored with regular deck-building at the moment, and have returned to one of my favoured activities in such a case, building character decks. To me, half the fun in building a character deck is creating a deck that you could imagine the character using, or one that supports the theme/feel of a character's deck, whilst retaining a degree of playability.

To that end I make this important disclaimer: These are not 100% accurate decks, and were never meant to be. 100% accurate decks for main characters have been done enough times that I don't see the benefit in doing so here, and other more minor characters are simply not able to have 100% accurate decks due to a lack of cards played.

I have updated the decks, given them some facelifts and meshed them with newer cards, hopefully whilst still maintaining the basic core of the character's deck. I try to maintain a very strict "no more, no less" 40 card deck limit, reflecting how the anime/manga allowed for decks only of exactly 40 cards, and also follow the current banlist as best as possible. Also, staples do tend to get splashed in somewhat, but nowhere near as heavily as in true competitive decks, usually just providing supporting scaffolding for character decks that may have fewer known cards.

Opinions and suggestions are very welcome, and most importantly, I will take on any and all requests for pretty much any character that has dueled at least once, since I like a challenge.

CYBER KAIBA: TRUE-LIFE REPLICA

The Rundown:
  • This is a simple Equip Deck, essentially, with Antique Gear Knight and Antique Gear Engineer replacing the trump card Automatic Giant, which was also a Machine with 1800 ATK. The Giant was completely immune to opponent S/T effects, and I feel the inability to activate S/Ts in the Battle Step emulates this well, as does the Engineer's trap protection.
  • Cyber Kaiba ran Battle Ox, Hitotsu-Me Giant and Saggi, hence the odd monster inclusions in this deck that may make it somewhat less effective.
  • Cyber Kaiba ran a variety of Equips that powered up the Giant in particular situations, effectively creating an Equip Toolbox that I've attempted to replicate here.

YUGI MUTO: A KING IS BORN – DUELIST KINGDOM

The Rundown:
  • Strealined and updated the haphazard DK deck, focusing on the two Ritual Monsters to retain the DK feel.
  • Cut out the variety of weak or high-level cards for strong Normal monsters, to reflect the "earlier era" feel of Duelist Kingdom, and to support Advanced Ritual Art usage.
  • Themed the monsters around DARK/EARTH and Spellcaster/Beast-Warrior.
  • Gaia the Fierce Knight was deemed unsuitable, and thusly replaced by his Synchro counterpart, bringing the deck into the modern meta.

SETO KAIBA: SOUL RECOVERY - DUELIST KINGDOM

The Rundown:
  • Much easier conversion than Yugi's, as he actually had some stronger monsters, and La Jinn combos well with Ancient Lamp to this very day.
  • Replaced most monsters with retrained or similar counterparts, like Chiron for Mystic Horseman and Opticlops in place of the Hitotsu-Me Giant. Peten is a solid replacement for Saggi, in my opinion.
  • Plasma Zone seems counterintuitive at first, but is needed to bring his monsters over the threshold for the alternate virus cards I've subbed in for the banned CCV.

These Decks are fun, competitive and creative. I like it very, very much!
Well done! Character Gallery idea is great.

What about Kuriboh Calling Flute in Yugi's Duelist Kingdom Deck?

I'd like to see some Decks from 5Ds, specially Dark Signers. Would you mind trying those out?

At your request, a Dark Signer. Bommer, to be precise. I may do another when I get back from work tonight, but I hope you like this one.
Quote:

The Rundown:
  • Relatively simple concept, just a machine Synchro Turbo with splashed in Immortal and Reactor support. No real substitutions to be made, so it's rather faithful to the character's shown deck. Overall a quite solid deck.

Why don't you try an Andore deck (I suppose it could be a combined Team Unicorn deck).

Looks great, thanks! I don't see any flaws. I hope you will find time to make the rest of Dark Signers.

I'd like to see a Jack Atlus deck focused on defense punishment (Twin Swords Marauder is underrated) as well as Red Daemons Dragon, I'd want it to be sans rediculous upgrades like Assault Modes and Majestic, Scar Red would be fine however.

I'd also like to see a deck based around Placido, how you'd do that I don't know.

The next Dark Signer is Kyosuke Kiryu, and I enjoyed building this one. I'll get onto a Team Unicorn deck after work, simply because I don't know Unicorn or Beasts well enough to build the deck in between actually working.

Quote:
KYOSUKE Kiryu: SATISFACTION IS ACHIEVED THROUGH REVENGE

The Rundown:
  • This is a slightly hybrid deck, as it utilises Hate Buster and Archfiend General from Kiryu's Team Satisfaction deck. General allows for field searching + beatsticks, and Hate Buster is just well suited to the deck overall.

I blame being at work and having to split my attentions :P Fixed up now.

Additional Comment:

Just whilst I work on some requests, here's four more character decks! Bandit's Buddies, Keiths Krew!

Quote:
BANDIT KEITH: HEAVY METAL CHAMPION

The Rundown:
  • A generic Bandit Keith deck, combining aspects of his Duelist Kingdom, Malik-Possessed and R manga decks.
  • Obviously an almost mono-Machine build, it wouldn't be hard to drop King of the Swamp and Morphing Jar for a pair of Solidarity. Wicked Eraser is going to be a thorn in the side of a Solidarity swap out, however.
  • Slightly Fusion-flavoured, the deck also has multiple destruction effects and a small amount of burn. Out of all the Character Decks I make, Keith is going to be the most likely to have OTK potential until Hell Kaiser's deck gets made, I expect.
  • The Wristband is of course the Side Deck, suitably set up for whatever situation, Keith only ever needs to slip a card from here into his hand to get back into the game.

GHOST KOTSUZUKA: DANSE MACABRE

The Rundown:
  • Combination of Kotsuzuka's Duelist Kingdom and Battle City decks, incorporating elements of Weenie Rush with stall, low-level monsters and swarming capacity.
  • The only one of the four Bandit Keith Crew who runs the real-life semi-staple Call Of The Haunted, as an homage to the Duelist Kingdom deck he ran.
  • Red Eyes Zombie Dragon replaces Pumpking the King of Ghosts as his finisher, in reference to Jounouchi's defeating him in Duelist Kingdom, and to take advantage of Zombie World.

TAKAIDO: BATTALION OF BURNING BEASTS

The Rundown:
  • Takaido's rarest and only shown card is Firewing Pegasus, a rather severe upper limit to place on a deck, so this was a fun challenge.
  • Basic Beastdown, with splashes of Normal and FIRE support. Solidarity is vitral for providing power here, so deck is mono-Beast.
  • Very much the simplest of the decks created so far, sporting very few combos, no Extra Deck and little in the way of Special Summoning. It's very much Summon a Monster, Make it Bigger, Attack for Game.

SATAKE: HARD-LIGHT HEROES

The Rundown:
  • The rarest and only card shown to be owned by Satake was Twin Headed Thunder Dragon. This deck is completely spun off from that card.
  • Since the other 3 of Keith's Crew are mono-type themed decks, I decided not to go with a predictable Thunder deck, and instead focused the deck into Light Fusion.
  • Essentially a Hero toolbox with some other Light Fusions splashed in, so that every monster can fuse some way or some how.
  • The Shining allows for significant material recursion when utilising Fusion Gate and the like, and is important for recouping costs in the deck.
  • If you want more beatstick power it's entirely possible to replace Sparkman with E.HERO Neos Alias, and replace the Sparkman fusions with more copies of Absolute Zero, Gaia and Great Tornado, but I decided that a variety toolbox is more character-suited.

JACK ATLAS: PUNISHMENT OF THE PROTECTORS

The Rundown:
  • This deck focuses on punishing Defense Position monsters, with multiple Piercing monsters and other effects that rely on the opponent's monsters being in Defense Position.
  • Quite a simple deck, there's not much in the way of combos, just pure power, just as a Jack Atlas Deck should play like.

Still working on a Team Unicorn deck, and I have a rough idea of what I may do with Placido's deck, but for now here's another creation I'm relatively happy with.
Quote:
SETO KAIBA: PYRAMID OF LIGHT

The Rundown:
  • Kaiba already has an exact 40-card decklist for the movie, from the novelisation, but givent hat some of the cards aren't released and others are banned, I decided to rebuild from the ground up, focusing entirely on Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon rather than just adding it in as an afterthought.
  • Relatively strong Dragon presence allows for pretty simple Five-Headed Dragon fusions, as well as the lesser but still potent King Dragun and Ultimate Dragon fusions.
  • Unlike the Grand Prix deck I'll eventually make, this deck only utilises RFG as a side-strategy, but it's still a handy option to keep open, and Dark Core is the deck's Stardust Out.

I accept your challenge. Here's a basic Frank deck that focuses on the effects his deck ran, rather than the generic Psychoanalysis theme, though I might try to build such a deck in the near future. Expect Ruka sometime soon.
Quote:
PROFESSOR FRANK: BURNING ID

The Rundown:
  • Since most of the Professor's cards don't exist, the obvious choice was to make the deck either completely themed on psychology or a general brain/mind theme, or to base the deck on Ido and the basic aspects of the anime deck.
  • Opted to create an Ido Burn, with a secondary strategy of Mill, based on the effects of the anime-only cards he utilised.
  • A small number of cards hold to the theme rather the strategy, with the three Mind S/Ts and the Brain Jackers supplementing Ido in the Psychoanalysis theme, as well as a splash of anti-Light, given the deck seemed built specifically to fight Ruka.
  • Though he didn't run Zombies, I found it to be the best Burn combo for Ido off the top of my head, and also felt that it reflects the destruction and decay that the Professor caused to the Duel Spirit world.
  • If I could work out a way to make an Ido Burn or Ido Mill that is effective without Zombies, I would do so in a heartbeat, so I could drop all the Zombie Support for more self-destroying, and replace Undead World with Ancient Forest, etc etc. If anyone can think of something worthwhile, let me know.

Maybe you should add Torrential Tribute instead of Destruction Ring and Terraforming for Undead World.
You mistaken Everliving Underworld Cannon as a Trap card.

TEAM UNICORN

The Rundown:
  • I opted to combine all 3 of Team unicorn's decks, plus Andore's scouting deck, into a single one, since I already have a number of beast decks either built or in progress.
  • There's little in the way of a direct strategy for this deck, it's merely a character deck first and foremost, and as such utilises the majority of Team Unicorn's cards. At best it has a Synchro Variety aspect to it.

Both Decks look great. Would you add D.D Unicorn Knight or Delta Fly in Team Unicorn's Deck?

I'd like to see Rudger and Rex as next Dark Signer Decks.
Try to focus Rudger's Deck more on bringing out and reusing Uru than Defense position tricks.

This is one I'm quite proud of, given that it's quite hard to make a deck with this guy that works even halfway well.

A Kaiba deck from Battle City would be awesome.

A Yubel deck that runs Super Poly, perhaps?

Heh. I tried a version of a Ritual-based Yugi deck on WC10, and it did okay. Basically it was a mix-match version of his BC and DK decks (so I guess it would be kind of like his Noah arc deck =/) which used the magnet warriors as ARA fuel and Valk as Trade-In bait. I chose to stick with Magician of Black Chaos, though since it worked with Girl.

Anyway, the Cyber Kaiba deck is pretty creative. Yugi's DK deck is kind of iffy, but what can you really do with his DK deck, though. lol

I`d like to see the evolution of Odion`s deck.
Enough interesting Trap monsters and Counter Traps to choose from now.
