#254/#003 - Sceptile
Type: Grass
Ability: Overgrow[Raises grass moves in a pinch.]
Base Stats: HP: 70
Att: 85
Def: 65
Spd: 120
Sp Att: 105
Sp Def: 85
Description:
Sceptile is one of the starters in Ruby/Sapphire. Although he may seem weak at
the beginning in the game, IMO he is probably the most variable and best out
of all of them. It has a wide arrange of attacks, from annoyance moves to
physical attacks to special attacks. It is best used as a Special Sweeper to
make use of that enormous speed that can rival Alakazam's and that very high
Special Attack. You might have to worry about that Defense since it probably
can't last more than 3 hits without EVs and nature. Treeko-Sceptile all have
similar attacks. Leaf Blade is its signature move, no other Pokemon can learn
it. It's very strong and has a high critical hit ratio. Sceptile is rather
overused as a special sweeper, simply because it's so fantastic. It's
Swampert's worst enemy. Sceptiles usually have the use of HP since a steel
can stop it right there without it. Sceptile is very easy to use, it's fast
and can sweep.
Special Sweeper:
---------
Sceptile@Petaya Berry
Timid: 252 Sp Att, 252 Spd, 6 HP
HP Water/Fire/Special Attack
Crunch/Substitute
Dragon Claw
Leaf Blade
It's a simple really, and probably the most common moveset used. The first
slot is an HP filler for a special attack not covered in your team. Timid is
to boost speed, and since it has high speed already with Timid, Petaya Berry
is used to boost sweeping quality. As a substitute for HP for ingame players,
you may use Leech Seed for those nasty Steels. Some people prefer Substitute
since Crunch is probably the least most used out of the four attacks.
Toxistaller:
---------
Sceptile@Leftovers
Timid: 252 HP, 129 Def, 129 Sp Def
Leech Seed
Toxic
Protect
Leaf Blade
Ahh, if only Taunt could be learned. This moveset works very well, I nearly
KO'd a Blissey with it. Just keep using Leech Seed, Toxic, Protect, and
sometimes Leaf Blade for some surprises. Different from the standard Sceptile,
and it makes use of Leaf Blade, STAB, and Overgrow. Secksay.
Physical Sweeper:
---------
Sceptile@Liechi Berry
Jolly: 252 Att, 252 Spd, 6 HP
Brick Break
Earthquake
HP Rock
Aerial Ace/Swords Dance
Not as effective as the other sets, but still good. STAB is kinda wasted here
though, as well as its ability and Sp Att. Its attack is high enough to make
it physical, so it may as well work. Caught some people off guard with this
set. Don't expect to do as much damage as the special sweeping one though.
it gets annoying when links to moveset guides are provided in the Help Thread
all right, no more albinoblackesheep annoying, but you should read those guides, and take a set and customize it

There are usually much better sets, and especially EV spreads, then what you will find in a standard moveset guide [whatever they're called]. They're just available to provide you with some basic ideas, so keep that in mind.
Edit: Oh, and to everyone, stop mimicking Ronin's style with the "annoying" link. It's getting a little out of hand. =\

Uhh, no. Don't listen to these meanies. They don't know anything about movesets. Btw, those Sceptile movesets in the Help Thread are horrible. HERE are movesets that real champs use
Sceptile@Lefties
EVs:max everything
Nature: Doesn't matter. Perhaps timid, just for fun
- Pound
- Leer
- Absorb
- Giga Drain
Pound is for STAB. Leer adds annoyance. STAB+annoyance+parafusion= Guaranteed victory. Anybody have any comments?
wobmaster: strawhat posted those movesets? Who IS strawhat? strawho what? strawhere when? Don't post movesets from newbs. It's quite pointless

yeah. you should replace giga drain with splash and make it as uber as majikarp. it won't equal the uber pawnage that majikarp can deal out, but it can hold its own against most things. and lefties suck. you should replace them for something useful like stick

Btw, those Sceptile movesets in the Help Thread are horrible. Anybody have any comments?
Yes. I have two comments.
First of all, there are no Sceptile movesets on the Help thread. There are no moveset guides on the Help thread period. There are only links to other sites that have moveset guides. This was done obviously after the stickied moveset guide was unstickied and went to thread heaven. The need still existed for it. So I added the links. Just want to be clear on that.
Second, FWIW, I agree with phazonelite about copying Sir FR's 'annoying' thing. Posters will always ask questions that have already been answered, especially if they are new. If you want, point them to the Help thread or just answer their question---or do both.

I think the standard is:
Sceptile@Lefties
Leech Seed
sub
HP:ice
Leaf Blade
Timid, 252 spd, 252 sp. atk, 4 HP
My favorite Sceptic tank is:
Sceptile@Lefties
Leech Seed
Protect
sub
Leaf Blade/Focus Punch
Timid/Jolly, 252 sp. attack/attack, 252 spd, 4 HP
Animal suggested this for sweeping:
Sceptile@Bright Powdah/Petaya/Lefties
sub
DT
Leaf Blade
Endevor
Dunno about EVs, though Timid 252 spd for sure.
NEVER EVER EVER USE PK FIAR ON SCEPTILE. It doesn't allow max speed, which Sceptile NEEDS.

I decided to start breeding for crunch and dragon claw[used tm]. I bred sceptile to a shelgon who had both moves, but for some reason the babies only know crunch and their normal moves. What am I doing wrong?

Shelgon learned Dragon Claw through TM. Only naturally learned moves will be passed down to the baby(I think that's right)

No, that's not right. TM-learned moves can be passed on to offspring - BUT only if the offspring is capable of learning that TM anyway. The problem here is that Treeko can't learn Dragon Claw, either from TM or by breeding. If you want a Sceptile who knows Dragon Claw, you're going to have to use a TM on it (or use AR to create one that knows it).

Thanks, I didn't realize treeko couldn't learn dragon claw.
