I have heard from other resources about a so-called "safe" MissingNo on R/S. His sprite looks like two question marks paired-up, like this: ??. There is also a 1/400000 chance or something of finding him. Has anyone else heard of this glitch, or encountered him?

I've heard of him before. Haven't encountered one or even tried to AR-encounter one

Well, if "??" actually exists, then does it have any effect on gameplay?

It messes up your game only when you catch it. When you catch it sometimes in deletes all of your Key Items.

This "??" thing even has a Pokedex entry. It's like "This is a newly discovered Pokemon, no information." or something like that. It's like the programmers put him in there.

If you lost all your key items though... they aren't something you can just get again.

Well several of the key items you can deposit in PC. the others are temporary.

When it deleted all of my key items I was freaking out untill i remembered i had an AR and then just used the "all key items" code. :p

If the Pokemon even has a PokeDex entry....then the programmers must have put him in there for a reason. But why would they do that if it messes up your game?

Perhaps the pokedex entry is for the ones which don't have entries for some reason.

Good theory, but why wouldn't a Pkmn have an entry? Or maybe it was made to prevent something worse from happening when you happened to catch a glitch Pkmn.

That's what I meant...

How do you catch it? I would like to know please.

Use Gameshark or Action Replay......

Perhaps the pokedex entry is for the ones which don't have entries for some reason.
Wellllllllllll........ Let rewind a few years and contemplate the creature known as "Missingno.". It's name was carefully entered into the game data by the programmers. But It was never intended to be seen by the players. It was there simply to fill in the holes in the pokemon data tables. I think the Pokedex entry for "??" is there to keep the game from crashing if you encounter a pokemon that doesn't have an entry. This may be why Gold and Silver would crash if you used a code to fight and capture an Egg. Egg doesn't have a pokedex entry and thus the game would crash if you tried to catch it.

Maybe the programmers immediately encountered this at the last minute before the game shipped, and tried to do anything they could to prevent it, thus making a PokeDex entry.

I dunno. It's hard to gues what they were thinking.

It's impossible to guess what they were thinking.... because they weren't thinking to begin with:D

Isn't the question mark thing called "MissingNo"? I've heard that somewhere.

Missingno. was in Pokemon Red and Blue and the one in Fr/Lg and R/S is just "??".

marhawkman is correct. Missingno. was used a "place holder Pokemon". In the original R/B, there were 255 slots for Pokemon data, ranging from 00 to FF. Well they only used up 150 (151 if you count Mew). The rest were programmed with Missingno. so the game wouldn't crash trying to read something that wasn't there.

I knew about the original MissingNo, a whole lot actually. I was only asking if the ?? guy was called "MissingNo" in R/S. I guess not.

It's a big ?? conspiracy. I think the programmers like Misingno.

I guess I shouldn't have started a thread about this, but HOW do you get the ?? Poke via Action Replay?

You can use the walk through code and face it in the grass behind the day care. It is behind the Pikachu.

There's a walk through code for AR? What is it

No clue. Try Google, Gamefaqs, or Gameshark.com.

Yay! I tried it from another website, and it works. Its awesome, but there's one problem: I went behind the Pikachu in the daycare but all I'm finding are Zigzagoon and Rosalia and a few others. Are you sure that's where he is?

I saw a movie of a trainer walking through the fence then encountering a Missingno. behind the Pikachu. He said that that was were Missingno. was but he may have had a Missingno. code in as well. If you have a catch any pokemon list then just put in the two digits that are lower than #001 or higher than #386. This should work because Missingno. is a place holder.
