When I looked at the rules for EDH it says that your general has to be a legendary creature. Does this mean that you cannot use planeswalkers as your general? Was just wondering this because I plan on getting into this type of format.

Horde of Notions is a good general. It's 5 color so you can add any card you like and its effect/stats are decent.

It's very difficult to suggest a good general, that's like being asked to suggest a good colour. I just got a foil Geth, Lord of the Vault, and I'm looking at him thinking, he'd be a great general. The kinds of cards that hit other players' graveyards in this format are amazing, this guy would wreck house. So, pretty much any legend can have a solid deck built around them, pick a favourite from your collection and it'll work.

Geth, Lord of the Vault is definitely powerful.
-Cabal Coffers, Vesuva, Deserted Temple, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, Extraplanar Lens, Gauntlet of Power and Doubling Cube will provide you with an obscene amount of mana.
-Black got a lot of tutors and draw power so you can get pretty much anything anytime.
-Altar of Dementia. That thing with Geth is a knockout engine.

Vendilion Clique, Zur the Enchanter, Sharuum the Hegemon, Rasputin Dreamweaver are all great generals even though building around them costs a bundle.

I probably won't build a Geth deck, though, because my most recent EDH deck was Chainer, Dementia Master and I'm hoping to do something completely different for the next one.

There are so many good generals but I know that Zur the Enchanter is considered one of the most ridiculous ones. However, if you play Zur you are normally targeted since you are way too good.

Yea, from what I heard Zur is one of the top EDH generals. His effect is ridiculous and you paint a big target on yourself the second you bring him out.

A tier list of non-banned general is commonly agreed to look like
Tier 0 (borderline broke)
Vendillion clique.
Tier 1 (competative)
Uril, the Miststalker
Zur the Enchanter
Sharum the hegemon
PROBABLY Thala Adel
Probably Sliver Queen
Tier 2 (solid)
Invasion and planeshift dragons
Horde of Notions
Hazeon tamar
there are alot here.

I heard Reaper King was a good general. But I also heard that it shouldn't be played cuz I guess it would take away the spirit of EDH just because people would use it so they could use any color and use all of the powerful cards in the game.

so build a Reaper King deck without making is a simple WUBRG good stuff list?
I mean he's pretty much strictly worse than sliver queeen and scion at those type of decks.
Reaper King is probably a tier 2 or less general because both above are tier one and much stronger when on the field.

Just use all the scarecrows and cards like Erratic Portal and Crystal Shard to bounce your scarecrows for later use. Prototype Portal is also a good addition to get a steady steam of scarecrows out. I would probably imprint Scarecrone on it because that thing is so good.

hmm, could anybody recommend the best general thats all colors? or least their opinion, as well as generals with killer effects that are low mana cost?

Its a toss up between Sliver Queen and Scion of the Ur-Dragon. Scion can de some insane tricks but you need dragons.
Best bang for buck generals?
vendillion Clique
Thala Adel
eight and a half tails
Kagemaro the first to suffer
Dralna, bloodchief
Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker
Ezuri, Renegade Leader
Eldrami, Lord of Leaves
Uril the mistalker
Gaddock Teeg (only in multi if your a horrible person with no feelings)
Sharuum, the hegemon
Mockingbird

For my 5-Color EDH deck I'm proto-typing, Cromat is my general.
But also a general that has been showing up in my area and used against me is Sen Triplets... that's annoying.
But what it comes down to really is what strategy do you want to run. There are a multitude of Legendary Creatures, and there are two questions you should ask yourself when picking it.
1. Can I build a strategy around the general (or the chosen colors) in at least a way that compliments the general?
2. Will its repeated appearances be devastating?
