I don't have a ton of money, so when I enter a draft tournament, I want to win. Is there a good way to practice drafting to hone skills without actually buying packs? Like maybe a free online program?
this site might help im not the greatest at drafting but ive learned from this an playing games
http://draft.bestiaire.org/
also drafting is basically easy just pick the color that no one else is picking remember what each colors are known for doing Green + White + Red are probably best drafting colors
you can make fake packs out of yours an your friends cards an then do it like that make sure its random though
Also you want a mixture of Low mana cards an high mana cards basically because of the fact somehow someway you always end up with a crap load of mana you dont even need because alot of people pick low mana cost cards if you pick 1 or 2 big cards such as Stormtide Leviathan an idk Mordant Dragon. They'll work to your advantage midway through the game
hope this helps =]

Jay B def has some viable stuff there.
What we do (I say we because i have a lot of friends that play) is go out after a pre-release and get the cheapest box we can find off the internet. (Usually like $80-100... Some places will give you a 10% discount if you pre order too) It usually comes to $15-$20 a head (between 6 people, depending on where you buy.)
The rest of the box is used as a prize unless other people want to enter after the fact... For a small fee ;P
Also, this isn't something we do ALL THE TIME. Although a couple of our members probably could afford it, its something we do to get a feel for the set; to become familiar with the game mechanics etc. In all honesty after one of these, and the pre-release, I feel more comfortable in the drafft environment.
Note that this method is only viable if you've got 1st, The players to commit to it, and 2nd, the cash. In my opinion, 6 is the minimum number of people to make it worthwhile.
thanks an ya that's a good point to buying a booster box an then selling draft entry's to your own draft at your house etc. is perfect think of it this way
you spend 95$ On A Booster Box Of 36 Packs
You have a total of 5 People (Not counting Youself)
3 Pack's Per Person At 4$ a Pack = 12$
5 People x 12$ = $60 Now just think that's only 18 Pack's (Counting yourself)
You now have Another 18 Pack's Left Over after the draft. Of which You only spent $35 On. That's less then $2 A Pack =] which you can either sell to the draft member's at a discout $3 a pack an then buy a booster box for yourself + keep the draft cards you originally drafted =]

Or you could have a second draft and score another $60 then buy another box, be up $25 and do more drafts.
