I've been thinking of buying the subtitled version of this anime.
Any comments? Is it worth buying?

I've seen GTO at Suncoast before and I think its a normal 26 episode series.
But I have no idea what it is about.

I saw a box set including a GTO t-shirt at my local Best Buy. I haven't had the chance to see it sadly. One of my buds has and says its pretty hillarious and one of his favorite anime. From what I've read its bout a former punk/ gansta who decides to become a teacher so he can try to make sure their life doesn't suck like his. He uses his street smarts in many of his lessons. I heard it was really good and funny. I really want to have a chance to watch this.

kind of OT...but just to judge the popularity of GTO:
the final episode of the live action TV show was the most watched TV program in the history of Japanese television

The GTO boxset that Shiro was talking about is a pretty good deal. I saw it at my local Best Buy. Its only 70 bucks.

Having recently viewed GTO this summer, its now one of my favorite animes of all time and easily the funniest series I've ever watched. And believe it or not, the dub of GTO is as good as the Japanese version.
I can't remember GTO ever having aired on TV, but I think it should still have a decent fanbase.
GTO fans please post here.

Great Teacher Onizuka was aired on Showtime. I don't know if its still being aired because I've only had basic cable all my life. One of my friends tells me that in his opinion the dub does have problems. Not with the voice actors, but with the script changes. Two of my other friends love the anime series because of how hillarious it is. My other friend is a giant fan of the manga with all the current volumes. Oh and me? I haven't had a chance to buy/watch the anime series sadly. I'm hoping to find the dvd boxset with the t-shirt somewhere, but have my doubts. I purchased volumes 1,2, and 5 of the manga and its great. I really love the hillarious moments Onizuka gets into. Its such a shame though that bookstores rarely have the earlier volumes of series like GTO. It took me forever to find my GTO manga. Definitely one of my most favorite manga of all time.

The anime spanned 43 episodes, but the manga is still in production. I always hate to see an anime stop before the manga is completed. I'd like to read some of the manga where the anime left off just to see if its as good as the first arc/season.
As for script changes, it becomes necessary with puns and rhyming words that would not translate very well. Either way, I don't think any of the changes have any real effect on the overall presentation of the story.

I've yet to see the anime version of GTO, but they did make a version where they used real people, & it's freaking hilarious. I'd love to watch the anime version, but I don't have the availability to get any anime/manga.... :(

If my memory serves me correctly, it's about a teacher who goes to a school to teach, but he's a guy who has skipped school lots of times when he was a teen, & hasn't had too much training to be a teacher. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.

actually he onizuka is a really good teacher. he was just a delinquent back in his HS days. as for hims a s a educational teacher. he's far from it. but for a life teacher. he's the best there is. he has his own unorthadox way of teaching and it works.

I knew I was missing something in my description. I just couldn't seem to remember how to put it.
Well, that's very true. he was indeed a delinquent, he often skipped school, caused trouble, etc. He sometimes even caused trouble when he was teaching (at least in the real-people version).

Onizuka is more of a life lessons teacher. He hardly ever has an actual class. Sometimes he'll just leave notes on the board that say "study by yourselves."
Saying he was a delinquent in his HS days is an understatement, as he was the leader of a motorcycle gang.

Well? Has anybody else seen the show?! What do you think of it?

I started a GTO thread last week, but it isn't official or anything.
If i were you, I would have just started a new topic instead of looking all the way back to February.

I'm not sure how accurate the anime ending is compared to the manga, but I'm assuming that its pretty close. Aside from the fact that the GTO manga is still currently running.
