Thursday night comes around, and I decide to try and get to bed early, as we're suppose to leave at 8am Friday morning to drive to NJ. I lay down around 10pm...and wake up at 3am. Cannot get back to sleep, so I decide to just get up and get ready for the trip ahead. 5 hours later, I'm outside of Lucky's Card Shop waiting on everyone who's riding in the van I rented. 8:20ish me, Mark, Jeff, Mitch, and Perkins are on the road to Wilson to pick up Treadwell. It's 'supposedly' on the way, but turns out that it most certainly is not. The trip is full of laughs, and waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much talk about Pokemon. Mitch, Jeff, and Treadwell apparently are the baddest Pokemon trainers in NC, and made sure we all knew it for an entire 4 hour block of time. Trip moves along steadily, until DC. Construction has traffic acting a fool, so we're held up for a good hour there. After stopping for Jeff's baby bladder for the 3rd time, we finally get moving, and get to NJ around 6:30ish.
Me and Mark decide sitting in the hotel is lame, and set out for NYC. We head to the train station, and fumble around trying to figure out which train goes where, etc. We finally get it ironed out, and are on our way. 40mins later, we arive in Penn Station. We emerge from the subway tunnel right in the heart of Madison Square Garden, and let out a stereo "omfg". We spend the next 4 hours walking around Times Square, drinking Starbucks, eating real NY Pizza, and generally repeating the night's earlier "omfg". It was amazing to say the least. After much confusion, we're finally on our way back to NJ on the train. We get to the hotel, I resleeve my deck and whatnot, realize that I do not have a Fortress Dragon and therefore 2 x Cyber Dragon in the side are worthless, and get to bed sometime before 4am.
6am comes promptly 2 hours later, and with it a barrage of alarm clocks from the the various phones spread across the Hotel room. 2 hours, and many choice words later, we're standing in the longest line I've ever seen for a Yugi tourney. I can tell it's gonna be a long day.
Round 1 - Adam (Synch Cat)
Game 1: I never take a hit, and he scoops it up somewhere along the way.
Game 2: Same as above, but I drop to 7200 from Brain Control along the way.
1-0
Nice start to the day.
Round 2 - Coby (Flamvell)
Game 1: Went by fairly quickly. All I remember was turn 5. I had Bottomless set with Gorz, Soul Exchange, Heavy, Alchemist, and Thestalos in hand. He plays
Rekindling to special Firedog and Magician. Instead of bottomless-ing the Dog, I let him synchro, as I wanted to Soul Exchange the Stardust next turn. I bottomless'd the Stardust to clear my field. He negated, and I was thinking I'm good. He then plays another rekindling. Synchs for another monster. Then plays ANOTHER Rekindling. I'm like, omfg. He ends up attacking with a Stardust, Colassal Fighter, Firedog, and Magician. I'm at 5500. He hits for 1400 first, but I have to drop Gorz to keep from dying. He wipes them out and sets a back. My turn. There's nothing I can do to keep from dying next turn.
Game 2: I open up pretty good. He attacks with a monster at one point, I Battle Fader. Main phase 2 he tributes for Caius, removing Fader. I draw another Fader, with Soul Exchange and LaDD in hand. I'm thinking I'm good. I set PWWB and end. He attacks, I activate Fader, he flips Oppression. I chain PWWB to spin, and drop the Fader. Main phase 2 he sacks for Caius again. I'm scooping it up shortly thereafter.
We talk a bit after, and he says he was gonna run my deck but couldn't get the cards the night before. He said he thinks it's much better than his, and he was sorry for "me getting sacked by an inferior deck."
1-1
Well, that sucked.
Round 3 - Frank (Koa'ki Meiru Deck)
Game 1: I see what he's playing and think "this'll be pie". I win quite quickly.
Game 2: I'm thinking there is no way I can lose. He goes first, does some searching and whatnot. I draw have Fader and Gorz in hand, so I end. Turn 3 he does a whole lot of shenanigans, and ends up swinging with 6900 on board...1900 of which was Koa'ki Meiru Dragon-guy. He says Light and Dark monsters cannot be special summoned. I cry. I survive for a few turns, and end up Brain Controlling for game.
2-1
Tougher than I thought.
Round 4 - Calvin Tsang (Frog Monarchs)
Game 1: I'm thinking "Uh oh, he's Asian and is wearing a nice looking sponsor shirt." Anywho, frogs catch me off guard, and he gets this one.
Game 2: Slow, steady game. I get it in the end.
Game 3: Some stuff happens, and we're in time. I get first turn in time, meaning he'll have last. On his turn he ends up getting the Frog lock on the field with a Monarch. I draw for my last turn. I'm at 2900; he's at 6200 with the frog lock. I end up playing 2 x Econ and brain control that turn, and somehow get his down to 500. I think I Cyber Valley away his monster or something. I end with a Fader in hand and a set Backrow. He draws for the last turn of the match. He brings back Treeborn, specials some frog from his hand, and drops LaDD. He's reading Fader, and knows he can negate it this way and attack for game. He attacks, I activate Fader, LaDD activates...I chain Mirror Force. GG.
3-1
Whew. That was close.
Round 5 - Shawn (Lightsworn)
Game 1: I have a very defensive hand, and realize he's playing Lightsworn. He's playing very aggressively, so I'm focusing on decking him out. I'm sure I have him, as he has 2 cards left in deck with JD on the field. I end my turn with Battle fader in hand. He draws, equips Spirit Burner to JD and blows the field. I'm like wtf is that card? I read the card and cry. Next turn he's attacking for game.
Game 2: I know that I can't deck him out, so I have to be aggressive. He get's me to 4400, but I get the win.
Game 3: We go in to time, and I end up tributing for Caius and removing himself for game.
4-1
Another close game in time.
Round 6 - Dakota (Machina Gadgets)
Game 1: Slow game, ending with me winning. Nothing spectacular.
Game 2: We go to time here, and he wins.
Game 3: We start in time, so we have 4 turns and then first blood after. We get through the first 4, so it's down to the wire. He has a FD monster, a Gearframe equipped with Peackeeper, and a FD backrow. I soul Exchange his Gearframe equiped with Peacekeeper and sack something of mine for LaDD. Peacekeeper is ruled to activate, LaDD chains, he chains Bottomless. I have a set PWWB, so I chain to bottomless and discard Dandylion targeting his monster. After resolution I'm left with 2 tokens to his set backrow. He draws, summons a Gadget, searches, and pops a token. He sets another backrow and ends with 1 card in hand; the gadget. I draw...Thestalos. Tribute the one remaining token and discard gadget for game. For those that have been wondering; Thesty > Raiza.
5-1
People were watching this game closely. Mini-explosion of cheer when I dropped Thesty. Good times.
Round 7 - Will (Hampster Cat w/ Monarchs)
Game 1: I win after a medium paced game.
Game 2: He wins because I forget how to play Yugioh. I'm at 2800, he's 3500. I have a Battle Fader on field and Gorz in hand. He tributes something for Caius and targets my Fader. I drop to 1800, and then he attacks for 2400 and the game. I could've dropped Gorz off the burn damage, and would have won the following turn with Econ/Treeborn.
Game 3: We start in time, and he wins due to early damage.
5-2
I'm upset, as I should have been 6-1.
Round 8 - Carlos (Twilight Zombies)
Game 1: I remain in control the entire game, and LaDD makes quick work of the late game.
Game 2: I side in 2 Vanity's Fiend. I get one out on turn 2. I'm winning a few turns later. I attacked for game with his hand of Battle fader and Gorz.
6-2
Ok, so I'm headin to day 2. I should only have 1 loss, so I'm kicking myself, but hey, it happens.
We all end up leaving around 1am. We head to McDonalds, and place a 55$ drive-through order. Jeff orders a 3 piece strip meal, and later on begs me to upgrade his order to a 5. After a small pain in the rearend, we get everything straightened out and get back to the hotel lobby. We all sit around and eat and joke. Jeff gets 3 strips in to his meal, and offers the other 2 away. After being a pain. Punk. We get to bed around 3am.
6am comes just as early as the day before. We all have to get up and pack the room. Blah blah blah, and we're at the convention center by 8:30. Round 9 to start at 9am.
Round 9 - Mark (Machina Gadgets)
Game 1: I'm half-asleep, and he wins.
Game 2: I'm half-asleep, and I win.
Game 3: I open up amazing. I One for One for Valley, ditching Dandylion...he Torrentials. I set JuJu and end. He NoCs. I draw, allure, something something, set another Juju, an Econ, and PWWB. He draws. Now, he gets cocky on this turn and claims he has game. He has all 3 gadgets on the field with the 2500 Machina guy in hand. He plays creature swap and says there's nothing you can do...it's game, and shows me his hand. I chain Econ, tributing Juju to target Red Gadget, chain PWWB, discarding to taget Yellow gadget. It resolves, sending Yellow to top, I get Red Gadget from Econ, then Creature Swap resolves and I swap his Red Gadget for his green. Now he can only attack over the Green with his special'd Machina, and directly for the gadget damage. Instead of dying, I'm left with 300. He passes with a field of machina and Gadgets, no back row. I draw...Thunder King: Rai Oh. Now, here's where I really get pissed. The 2 Thunderkings in my side took the place of the 2 Cyber dragons because I couldn't find a Fortress Dragon. Now, here I am with what SHOULD be Cyber Dragon in my hand, and a Dimensional Alchemist. I should have been able to Special Cyber, fuse for a 3000atk Fortress, drop Alchemist, attack for 4800, and end with him top decking a gadget. I would have won. Hands down. Instead, I have to set Alchemist to get Fader back, and drop it to survive. I lose the following turn.
6-3
I'm so tired, and extremely angry, so I don't even bother to play anymore. There's no chance of an x-3 topping, so I just relax. I spend the rest of the time selling cards for myself and other people to the vendors, and just hanging out. We decide not to leave right away, because we don't want to hit DC at 5. We stick around alot later than we should, and finally leave after agreeing to drop Watkins off at the Airport. We make our way there, and upon leaving proceed to get completely lost for about an hour. GPS doesn't have alot of the new roads around the airport, so we end up U-turning through the same set of tollbooths about 3 times. We finally get heading the right way, and slam face-first into some of the hardest rain I've even driven in. Thunder and lightning crash all around, there are cars off the road, in trees, smashed all across the road, etc. Yay. The rain lets up, and everyone falls asleep. Not to be outdone, I decide to sleep as well. Unfortunately I'm driving. I fight off head-on collisions for the better part of 4 hours, and finally after DC have to pull over and get Mark to drive. Of course now I can't sleep, and he get's too tired about 30 mins outside Wilson NC and gets me to drive again. We finally get there and drop Treadwell off. Jeff goes inside to get something to drink, and doesn't return for about 10mins. Upon making it back to the van, he looks a bit pale. We find out that he's left a nice juicy pile of vomit right in the middle of Treadwell's driveway. 3 piles, actually. Nice. We hit the store, load up on snacks and Redbull, get gas, and hit the road. There's about 1:45 til we get back to Greensboro. Everyone immediately falls asleep. I'm fighting with all that I have to stay awake.
We FINALLY make it to Lucky's. Everyone get's in there car and leaves. I have to wait on Mitch's mom to get there to pick him up. She shows up about 20 mins later.
I get home about 5am. Sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep...
