question dbz/GT

ok i got a quick question so i never got into the GT part of the game but anyways i see some of the gt cards say expansion only does this mean that they can only be played with each othre or can the older dbz cards be played with the gt cards as well?

and what where the new rules of the gt part i heard it was pretty much like the ornigal but u got like a extra card or something like that
