well if i were to go through the commons pile at my locals
how do i know which of those cards are from what set...

You can see the symbols on the middle right corner. Each symbols is shown to be part of the set.

Shards of Alara= 5 pieces makes up an oblong
Conflux= 5 Pieces makes up as a shield
Alara Reborn= 5 pieces are bounded by a straight horizontal line

Magic 2010= M10

Zendikar= a half diamond
Worldwake= (not yet released) A diamond with a cross
Rise of the Eldrazi= (not yet released) a geometric shape
