Bring back the Brooklyn Bridge flag!
That was the cry yesterday from veterans alarmed by the apparent theft of a U.S. flag from high atop the bridge by anti-Bush protesters.

The battle-tested veterans took aim at the suspected thieves and held out hope that the Stars and Stripes had not been destroyed.

"It's disgraceful," Vietnam veteran Tom Shannon, 54, said from VFW Post 107 in Marine Park, Brooklyn. "They should be prosecuted. I believe that 100%."

In order to hold someone accountable, cops first must determine what happened to the missing 12-by-18 foot banner.

NYPD officials said they were investigating the flag's disappearance but stopped short of confirming that protesters had breached tight security at the bridge and swiped it.

The Daily News revealed yesterday that the banner went missing from its perch atop one of the famed span's 273-foot towers sometime Tuesday, as cops and protesters squared off throughout Manhattan.

A city transportation worker noticed that the flag was gone Wednesday morning. The Department of Transportation, which oversees the bridge, called police and put up a replacement flag that afternoon, officials said.

An anonymous press release posted on the Internet the same day claimed responsibility, saying the flag was being "held hostage."

The statement demanded the release of all RNC protesters and the immediate resignations of President Bush, Mayor Bloomberg and several other Republican officials.

The screed said the flag would be burned early yesterday if the sweeping demands were not met. It was unclear if the threat had been carried out.

"If they do [burn] it, I would beat the hell out of them myself," said Joe Stewart, 83, commander of VFW Post 2348 in Long Island City, Queens, who served in the Army at Pearl Harbor.

"You're supposed to respect the flag," Stewart said, as though he was readying for battle. "It's your country's flag."

it goes to show u how people can use their rights. its not a harsh penalty to do sumthin like that so they did it. i can see why. bush is all for sendin troops everywhere but he himself never did it at all. and all those people who are sayin they should die should look at their ethics. its a flag (its our flag), but its a flag. we see people do it and its as if they tore those peoples hearts out. i respect whoever took it for doin it

People get so emotional over a piece of dumb cloth. Especially one as shameful as the Stars and Stripes looks now. I have my own flag...

Top half is red, bottom half is green. There is a shield in the middle with Yellow and blue like this:
YB
BY
and 2 swords crossed, pointing down.

Well anywho...I might end up being drafted if Bush gets re-elected. :(

Chinese man accused of killing 10, selling bodies
Reuters News Service

BEIJING - Chinese police have detained a "sorcerer" who killed 10 people and sold their bodies to bereaved families to cremate in the place of loved ones who were secretly buried, police and a state-run newspaper reported Thursday.

The 34-year-old man, surnamed Lin, strangled or poisoned the 10 villagers at his home, next to a temple, in the southern province of Guangdong, the Beijing Morning Post said.

Chinese tradition, especially in rural villages, holds that burial brings peace to the dead and tombs are placed according to the laws of geomancy. But in a country of 1.3 billion people, the seemingly haphazard siting of graves wastes scarce farmland.

Since 1978, when China launched its reform drive, all levels of government have recommended cremation to save land.

"This region cremates its dead, but local people prefer to be buried in the ground. People bought the bodies to be cremated in place of their relatives," a police official told Reuters Thursday.

A man being chased by sheriff's deputies dropped his fiancee's 8-month-old daughter out of a moving car, sending the baby tumbling across the highway in her car seat.

The girl was unhurt, but the man later was fatally injured in a crash.

Dana Bettin, 23, died Sunday, three days after the highway chase that ended when he crashed his 17-year-old fiancee's car into an unoccupied squad car.

Deputies began chasing Bettin after he was accused of domestic violence at a local hotel. By the time officers arrived, he had already left with the girlfriend's baby in the car.

During the chase, Bettin slowed to about 10 mph, opened the car door and dropped the baby out in her car seat, which slid, spun and tipped over, sheriff's Sgt. Dan Pamenter said.

Pamenter said the child was "crying a little bit" but calmed down when he picked her up and put her in his car.

"She didn't have a scratch on her," he said. "She wasn't even dirty. She had on these little pajama things. She was just as content as any baby."

The chase continued at up to 100 mph, ending when Bettin's car crashed, rolled over and pinned him underneath. He died at a hospital in Green Bay.

Sgt. David Catalano said that he spoke to the baby's mother on Monday and that the girl was doing fine. "I am so pleased the baby was not hurt. That was a huge relief. I couldn't believe my eyes," he said.

Catalano said he had been told that Bettin was not the father of the child.

Eat baby copper!

Sry had to say it. This is probably the most disturbing news ive heard in awhile. Who would throw a child out of a car to stop the police? Thankfully that poor child is going to be ok.

ATLANTIC WEATHER
It's hurricane season - for another 30 years
DENVER - One after the other, they kept coming: ferocious hurricanes Charley, Frances and Ivan pounded the United States and Caribbean islands, all in just five weeks.

Hurricane Ivan floods all but part of a highway in Gulf Shores in Alabama, US.
Now here comes Jeanne, which is threatening the Bahamas and could be lashing north Florida and Georgia by Monday.

Surely, say battered home owners re-hammering the same plywood over their windows, it can't get much worse.

But scientists are warning the 65 million Americans living on the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic coasts to expect weather like this for another 30 years - or more.

Sure, it's hurricane season and storms happen. But counting Alex, which swamped the Carolinas in August, that's five in six weeks, excluding tropical storms Bonnie, Gaston, Earl and Hermine.

'I don't remember this happening before in such a short period of time,' National Hurricane Centre director Max Mayfield told reporters. 'And the season is only half over.'

It might be a generation before hurricane weather slips back into a quiet phase, he and other experts say.

They believe the current hurricane surge is part of a storm cycle that probably has been waxing and waning for hundreds of years.

Roughly from 1970 to 1994, Atlantic hurricane activity in the US was relatively mild. Overall, the 25-year 'quiet' period generated about half as many destructive storms as the previous stormy phase dating back to the 1920s, and about half as many as today's stormy phase appears likely to produce.

Since 1995, environmental conditions have shifted and the Atlantic has been spawning more strong storms. The number of major hurricanes has more than doubled. In the Caribbean, it's up by a factor of five.

Scientists are not sure what causes the decades-long shifts in frequency but most agree that global warming plays little or no role in the number of storms in the current hurricane cycle.

So far, climate change is too uncertain and today's hurricane patterns are too complex to draw a connection.

'I don't think the warming now is anywhere near enough to account for the increase in hurricanes that we're seeing,' said scientist Robert Gall of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado.

'To me, this is just a natural variation in the frequency of hurricanes.' -- AP

Didn't the story of the Jersey Devil go like some lady was having somany children that she grew sick and tired of it, so when she had her last kid, she screamed out something like "Let the Devil have him" or something of that sort so...well you can guess what happened and who the Jersey Devil is and where he came from.

Betty Hill from Barney and Betty Hill died Sunday. :(

Betty Hill, whose tale of being abducted by aliens became the subject of a best-selling book and television movie, has died. She was 85.

Mrs. Hill died at her home in Portsmouth, N.H., Sunday after a battle with lung cancer.

Mrs. Hill claimed that she and her husband, Barney, were abducted by extraterrestrials in New Hampshire's White Mountains on a trip home from Canada in 1961.

The Hills were puzzled when they arrived home and noticed Betty's torn and stained dress, Barney's scuffed shoes, shiny spots on their car, stopped watches and no memory of two hours of the drive.

Under hypnosis three years later, they recounted being kidnapped and examined by aliens.

The couple gained international notoriety after going public with their story, traveling across the country to give speeches and making numerous television and radio appearances.

Their story also became the focus of John G. Fuller's 1966 best-selling book, "Interrupted Journey," and a television movie starring James Earl Jones and Estelle Parsons.

Mrs. Hill retired from UFO lecturing in her 70s and complained that the quest for knowledge about extraterrestrials had become tainted with commercialism. Too many people with "flaky ideas, fantasies and imaginations" were making UFO and abduction reports, she told The Associated Press in a 1991 interview.

"If you were to believe the numbers of people who are claiming this, it would figure out to 3,000 to 5,000 abductions in the United States alone every night," she said. "There wouldn't be room for planes to fly."

She also said the media had fueled UFO fiction.

"The media presented them as huge craft, all brightly lighted and flashing, but they are not," she said in a 1997 AP interview. "They are small, with dim lights, and many times they fly with no lights."

Mrs. Hill had gone a bit commercial herself, trying to fight UFO fantasies with a 1995 self-published book, "A Common Sense Approach to UFOs."

Before devoting her life to UFOs, Mrs. Hill had been a state social worker specializing in adoptions and training foster parents. Her husband died in 1969.

TACOMA, Wash. (Oct. 28) - A seriously wounded 8-year-old boy calmly described his father's deadly knife rampage during a call for help to 911. "My daddy killed me with a knife and I'm gone," the boy told a dispatcher. "Can you please send the Army men or the ambulance?"

The soft-spoken child gave a wrong address and then hung up. But a second dispatcher called back, keeping him on the line while a frantic search was under way.

A dispatcher says Anthony Sukto was very calm as he described how he and his mother were stabbed. (AP/Family Photo/News Tribune)

On Wednesday, authorities released the remarkable tape of Anthony Sukto's calm courage during the Oct. 22 ordeal, and the frantic efforts to find him.

"What's going on there?" asked dispatcher Kristine Woodrow.

"My daddy killed me with a butcher knife," Anthony said.

"How did that happen if you are talking to me?" Woodrow asked.

"Because," Anthony answered. "I don't know what happened, but something. He grabbed knives. I woke up. My dad, he was killing my mom and then my, my, my dad told me to go onto the other bed and then he's like, 'You're next,' and then he killed me. I'm still alive. I kind of survived."

Woodrow said she wasn't sure if what she was hearing was for real.

"He was extremely calm," she recalled Wednesday. "It wasn't a typical response from someone who had just witnessed what he witnessed or had just been attacked."

Woodrow said while police and firefighters tried to find where Anthony was calling from, she tried to keep him on the phone.

"Are you bleeding, Anthony?" she asked. "Uh huh," he answered.

"Where are you bleeding from?" she asked. "From my stomach," he said.

"Are you there by yourself?" Woodrow asked. "No. My mom is already dead and I am the only survivor," he said.

Authorities found the home minutes later when the child's father, Tony Sukto, 36, flagged down a fire truck. Sukto has been charged with the murder of his wife, Pranee, 39, and attempted murder of his son, and has pleaded innocent.

Anthony underwent surgery for lacerations to his liver and is recovering.

Woodrow said she wants to visit the little boy to tell him something she didn't get a chance to before.

"I want to tell him how amazing he is," she said. "I don't think he knows that."

The "living computer" was grown from 25,000 neurons extracted from a rat's brain and arranged over a grid of 60 electrodes in a Petri dish.
The brain cells then started to reconnect themselves, forming microscopic interconnections, said Thomas DeMarse, professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Florida.

When linked up to an F-22 jet flight simulator, the brain and the simulator established a two-way connection similar to how neurons receive and interpret signals from each other to control our bodies.

Gradually the brain learnt to control the flight of the plane based on the information it received about flight conditions.

From CNN: http://www.cnn.com/2005/LAW/02/04/costly.cookies.ap/

DURANGO, Colorado (AP) -- Two teenage girls who surprised their neighbors with homemade cookies late one night were ordered to pay nearly $900 in medical bills for a woman who says she was so startled that she had to go to the hospital.

Judge Doug Walker declined Thursday to award punitive damages, saying he did not believe the girls acted maliciously.

Taylor Ostergaard, 17, and Lindsey Jo Zellitti, 18, baked the chocolate chip and sugar cookies one night last July.

They made packages with a half-dozen cookies each and added large red or pink construction-paper hearts that carried the message, "Have a great night."

The notes were signed with their first initials: "Love, The T and L Club."

Then they set off to make their deliveries.

Wanita Renea Young, 49, said she was at her rural home south of Durango around 10:30 p.m. when she said saw "shadowy figures" outside the house banging repeatedly on her door.

She yelled, "Who's there?" but no one answered, and the figures ran away.

Frightened, she spent the night at her sister's home, then went to the hospital the next morning because she was still shaking and had an upset stomach.

The teenagers' families offered to pay Young's medical bills, but she declined and sued, saying their apologies were not sincere and were not offered in person.

The girls declined comment after the ruling. Taylor's mother said the girl "cried and cried."

"She felt she was being punished for doing something nice," Jill Ostergaard said.

Young said the teenagers showed "very poor judgment"

"The victory wasn't sweet," Young said. "I'm not gloating about it. I just hope the girls learned a lesson."

The teens said they did not answer when the woman called out because they wanted the treats to be a surprise.

From AOL News: http://aolsvc.news.aol.com/news/article.adp?id=20050204160509990010

DURANGO, Colo. (Feb. 4) - A Colorado judge ordered two teen-age girls to pay about $900 for the distress a neighbor said they caused by giving her home-made cookies adorned with paper hearts.

The pair were ordered to pay $871.70 plus $39 in court costs after neighbor Wanita Renea Young, 49, filed a lawsuit complaining that the unsolicited cookies, left at her house after the girls knocked on her door, had triggered an anxiety attack that sent her to the hospital the next day.

Taylor Ostergaard, then 17, and Lindsey Jo Zellitte, 18, paid the judgment on Thursday after a small claims court ruling by La Plata County Court Judge Doug Walker, a court clerk said on Friday.

The girls baked cookies as a surprise for several of their rural Colorado neighbors on July 31 and dropped off small batches on their porches, accompanied by red or pink paper hearts and the message: "Have a great night."

The Denver Post newspaper reported on Friday that the girls had decided to stay home and bake the cookies rather than go to a dance where there might be cursing and drinking.

It reported that six neighbors wrote letters entered as evidence in the case thanking the girls for the cookies.

But Young said she was frightened because the two had knocked on her door at about 10:30 p.m. and run off after leaving the cookies.

She went to a hospital emergency room the next day, fearing that she had suffered a heart attack, court records said.

The judge awarded Young her medical costs, but did not award punitive damages. He said he did not think the girls had acted maliciously but that 10:30 was fairly late at night for them to be out.

I can think of two words to describe that woman. The first is "stupid" and the second is . . . Let's just say it's associated with dogs. People who sue for no reason degrade those who do have cause for complaint - and so do those so-called lawyers who take such cases. Anyone reading about cases like this is going to think the profession is filled with Lionel Hutz type characters; if you watch "The Simpsons", you'll know what I'm talking about.

I mean, what next? Someone suing a theatre because a production of "Romeo And Juliet" made them cry and therefore caused "emotional distress"?! Talking of "emotional distress", I'm surprised this idiot didn't get counter-sued on exactly those grounds

Anyway, if people harass her now, it's her own fault for over-reacting. I appreciate that she might have been startled by "intruders", but, when she found out there was a completely innocent explanation, she should have glossed over it. But, no - she had to go whining to the nearest "lawyer". The girls apologised - what part of "forgive and forget" doesn't she understand?!

I'm glad we don't see too many cases like this in Britain, although there have been instances of events getting cancelled because the organisers are afraid they MIGHT get sued if something goes wrong.

Those deaths were mainly as a result of most of those people being connected at the brain, and not at the skull... I don't think their brains are connected, as the article states that the non-formed twin is not independent of life.

Like the 2 Egyptian 20-something-year-old conjoined sisters who unfortunately died on the table were connected at the brain.

Yeah, that's true. Brain connection usually leads to death. Skull connection can be seperated, avoiding death.

And, I think the 2 conjoined sisters were Iranian, not Egyptian.

I also heard about this a couple of months back. A man went outside of his house with a butcher knife to cut this chicken's neck since it kept making noise all night. He goes out with no pants on swings around and realises that he accidentally cut off his own *****. He was rushed to a hosiptal. I have the article clipped out. AND THIS IS FROM A REAL NEWSPAPER!! Here is another Weird/Funny one

The Associated Press
Updated: 9:37 a.m. ET Feb. 25, 2005

ASPEN, Colo. - The widow of journalist Hunter S. Thompson said her
husband killed himself while the two were talking on the phone.

“I was on the phone with him, he set the receiver down and he did it. I
heard the clicking of the gun,” Anita Thompson told the Aspen Daily
News in Friday’s editions.

She said her husband had asked her to come home from a health club so
they could work on his weekly ESPN column — but instead of saying
goodbye, he set the telephone down and shot himself.

Thompson said she heard a loud, muffled noise, but didn’t know what had
happened. “I was waiting for him to get back on the phone,” she said.

Hunter Thompson, famous for “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” and other
works of New Journalism, shot himself in the head Sunday in the kitchen
of his Aspen-area home. He was 67.

His son, daughter-in-law and 6-year-old grandson were in the house when
the shooting occurred.

Anita Thompson, 32, said her husband had discussed killing himself in
recent months and had been issuing verbal and written directives about
what he wanted done with his body, his unpublished works and his
assets.

His suicidal talk put a strain on their relationship, she said.

“He wanted to leave on top of his game. I wish I could have been more
supportive of his decision,” she said. “It was a problem for us.”

Continental Europeans, maybe. But the British do tend to draw the line at things like this in school projects. A few years back, I saw a news bulletin on sex education in Dutch school; one of the kids was illustrating a project with sexually explicit photographs which, according to the reporter, "would get a British child in trouble".

You do hear about things like that from time to time. Such cases usually arise because what a grieving family believes is a "fitting tribute" is viewed by those in charge of the burial ground concerned as "tasteless and/or vulgar". There may be more leniency with children's graves, but this isn't always the case.

Anyway, here's something that was in my local paper last night, copied out for your reading pleasure:

Stuck burglar calls the police

A boozed-up burglar broke into a cafe - then called police when he got stuck in a window trying to escape, a court has heard.

Christopher Kelman, 34, of Didcot, Oxfordshire, raided the drinks cabinet at the Upper Crust buffet on platform three of Swindon railway station on January 30 this year. He forced entry by pushing up the shutters.

After quenching his thirst with three cans of Stella Artois and three bottles of Budweiser, he decided to leave. But he chose the wrong window - one which was far too small, Swindon Magistrates' Court was told yesterday.

On finding himself "stuck", Kelman called for the help of officers from his local constabulary who were only too happy to assist, prosecutor Nadeem Aullybocus said.

Cafe manager Stephen Ballard informed police that £12 worth of alcohol was missing, Kelman was arrested for burglary. He admitted the charge and was fined £420, ordered to pay £11.92 in compensation.

That is pretty funny. I wonder how people can be so stupid.

CHICO, Calif. - California State University in Chico suspended a fraternity after members admitted they participated in an adult film.

The national chapter of Phi Kappa Tau also suspended the school chapter and is investigating the taping several months ago by Shane’s World, an adult film producer known for using college students in its videos. The company generally provides the female **** stars for the films.

Rick Rees, the university’s associate director of student activities, said the fraternity’s president apologized, admitting that “it was a bad decision.”

The school’s fraternity system is already under investigation after a student died in February from drinking a large amount of water. The victim allegedly was being hazed by members of a fraternity that had already lost its school affiliation.

Four members of the Chi Tau fraternity have been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of Matthew Carrington, and four other members face lesser charges.

University President Paul Zingg told the Los Angeles Times that Carrington’s death was “the last straw” and that if the Chico fraternity system was found to be beyond repair, he would shut it down.

LOL those pics are as fake as they can get, and the movies at the bottom are very stupid...

That's hilarious.

At least he isn't trying to pass it by as a REAL time machine.

What I was shocked about in that article was that he was in jail for violence against women...I never knew that...

But yeah, I always knew the Rick James thing would somehow get out of hand.
