I'd like to give all the novice Photoshop users in the area a thread to where they can discuss their Questions about the program.

Well - here it is!

We have a small but helpful group of Pojo users that are extremely knowledgable when it comes to this amazing program!

Have a question - post it here!

I believe you can download a trial version, but you'll have to buy the actual thing.

go to http://www.adobe.com you can get a trial of adobe photoshop. But the program costs about 600 dollars. But you can get student discounts I think or some courses I think have it like in high school.

i trial is 30 days

Everything "edit"-wise that is done in Paint, can be done in Photoshop, only in much easier standards.

Go into a little more detail on what you mean, though.

After making a background, if you want to put an image into the sig, how do you get the pic onto your banner without the pic opening in another window?

Monger
09-03-2004, 08:27 AM
Its a matter of selecting the area you want to copy off of the one picture, then selecting the area in the background you want it to show up at and simply copy / paste into.

From there you can use your "move tool" to edit the picture size and placement on the background - but it stays within the area you selected before you pasted.

The Lasso tool is used for selecting odd-shaped areas. Each version varies a little but the all have the same general purpose.

Much as that tutorial illustrates, the Magic Wand is a precision selection tool. It can be used for extracting just about anything from a picture or simply highlighting certain areas that the broader tools like Marquee and Lasso can't. When used in conjunction with an appropriate Tolerance level and possibly the Feather option you can produce very cool effects.

click edit and then image size, change it to 60 on height and then the other one should change keep on chaning untill what u want.

and for the magic wand too, from my memory (which isn't really good at this time of the day) it works really good wit animation cels, it cuts up the whole background leaving just the image. and also high quality pictures, just click on the background it selects the background

Ok, here's (hopefully) my last question: When i "save for web" on phototshop, it shows up in my folder on the computer or on the desktop, or wherever i tell it too (i can't tell it to save on the internet cause it's not on my desktop, it's on this little toolbar on my screen). When i drag it from the desktop to a page from the internet (this is how i get all my pictures in a separate web page) it doesn't show up as http//..., it shows up as "file://localhost/Users..." so i can't use it as a sig because it shows up as file.... How do i get it as "http..." on a web page.
Again thanks for all your help ThugzLife703.

just random suckage. I try to edit the text after I type it up and it doesn't work. I try to delete and start a new text box, and find it doesn't work. I did find out how to use ImageReady in order to make the type, but I want to edit it too.

How do I edit the type so that it can have gradient colors?

And I'm also trying to figure out how to make a good backround. I decided on a gradient, but I bet there's better things able to be done.

meteoraclown
11-10-2004, 07:01 PM
to edit the text, go to the text layer and make sure you have the text tool selected(in the tool box on the left) and to get gradient text right clikc the layer and go to blending options then go to gradient overlay. your done and if you got photoshop 7.(thats what i use)

I am so dumb... I don't understand what you guys are saying. THis might have already been asked, but how do I take a 500 x 500 image and cut off part of it, squish the image so it is the selection I want, and put it in a banner that is 468 x 60? Explain it in super dumb people speech so I can understand it.

Betelgeux

Go to the Toolbox on the left side of the screen and select the Crop tool (it's the third button down on the left). Then click the upper left corner of the picture and drag the mouse until a little box surrounds the whole picture. Next move around the individual sides of the box by clicking on the little squares on each side until it's surrounding only the part of the picture you want. Press Enter on your keyboard and everything outside of the box will be deleted.

To change the size of the picture click on the Image menu (at the top of the screen) and go down to Image Size. A box with pixel numbers and a few options should come up. If you want the picture to have the same proportions after you change its size (it will look exactly the same, only smaller), then make sure the square next to "Constrain Proportions" is checked. If you don't care if the picture gets squished or stretched then uncheck the square. Now you have to experiment a bit. The number in the Width box controls how wide left and right the picture is; the number in the Height box controls how tall up and down the picture is. If you put in smaller numbers the picture will get smaller (and if you put in larger numbers it gets larger). If you don't know how much larger or smaller you want the picture to be, just guess. If the picture gets messed up you can always press Ctrl and Z (at the same time) on your keyboard, and try resizing it again.

After the picture is the size you want, press Ctrl and A on your keyboard at the same time, and then Ctrl and C. Now go to your banner (if you don't have one open, go to File and then New, and put 468 in the width box and 60 in the height box and click OK). To put your picture into your banner press Ctrl and A again, and then Ctrl and V. Your picture should show up inside your banner. If it doesn't show up exactly where you want it to you can click on the top button on the right side of the Toolbox and move the picture around.

I hope it's easy enough to understand...

meteoraclown
11-25-2004, 06:32 PM
could be how the file is compressed(saved) or it could be your web host. try things out and see how they work. when it comes to animated gifs, don't use photobucket, the quality is really bad.

Try saving your images as high-quality JPGs or possibly PNGs. They tend to be more loyal to the original image.

Yeah. NEVER save your images as anything other than JPGs or PNGs. Everything else lowers the quality a lot. PNGs can get a bit big in file size, so don't use PNGs if you want to make a signature for this message board. They'll be too big.

The rules say 468 x 80, but mods allow up to 500 x 80. I make 400 x 100 and a few others(like Lord_Fluff, etc) make 519 x 119. What mods usually care about is its size in Kb. Around 20Kb is the largest allowed.

Sorry. I figured it was cut out because of the jagged top edge. Prolly happend when you either used your marquee tool to get the initial shape or when you erased the texture you used to get the surface of the planet.

Another tip for the planet: Give it an atmosphere. If the planet can support rings with its gravity it MUST have an atmosphere. Scientific Fact.

What are some good ratios of Opacity and Fill?

What are some good techniques to "hide" a picture inside a picture?

By that.. I'm guessing you mean blending right? Well for blending, you don't just want to lower the opacity, fill, etc... That helps, but also try yousing a let's say 21 or so eraser brush. (This really helps if you have a brush sig) So say you have a brushy sig. You slap on a picture.. Next thing you do is that choose the eraser tool, pick the brush you most frequently used (it doesn't have to be that one). Then start erasing around the picture you had. This helps out as if it is part of the background (or another picture for your question).

Well that's all I can think of right now... I hope I helped.. If you need anymore help on this. PM or AIM me.

Here used to be my way of blending, and still is when I'm in a hurry:

Switch to your lasso.
Set the Feather to 15 pixels
Select an area near the pic that is large, but not on the pic.
Hit delete until you get the desired effect.

Also, what does it save it as? A gif? Or a Photoshop document?

bear in mind that i've only done it a couple times myself... so if anything's a bit confusing....

first click the 'window' menu at the top of screen and make sure 'animation' is selected down near the bottom. (this will make the animation window appear if it isn't there already)

*i've only ever used psd's (photoshop files) when making animations, so if you're using something else this might not apply*

open the file of the graphic you want to animate. in the animation window, one frame should show up (it'll be a thumbnail image of the graphic). from here you just use the tools in the animation window to create the animated version of the graphic. the duplication button copies everything from the current frame and creates another frame indentical to it's predecessor. the tween button allows you do duplicate a frame multiple times over (instead of doing it individually each time). the looping options allow you the change the amount of time that passes between each frame (usually in fractions of a second).

to create the animation illusion, you had to tweak the image in each individual frame to create the look you want. there are no set instructions for this because what you need to do changes from graphic to graphic.

in any case, once you're done (and you've previewed the animation with the play tools in the animation box -- bear in mind that it will often preview slower than it truly goes), you need to select 'save optimized as...' from the 'file' menu and save the animation (it will save as a gif). if the finished animation is too large for your liking, you'll have to mess around with the optimized version of it in the 'save optimized as...' box that will pop-up (you can do that by clicking on the '2-up' or '4-up' tabs -- the computer will generate alternate versions for you to select from, all with varying file sizes).

....if you're still lost after that, let me know.

...it probably wasn't the clearest of explanations.... eh heh, my apologies. =\

You can't make a banner on word, to my knowlage. Because it cannot be hosted on the internet so it could be viewed. "Sig" and "banner" are, for the most part, interchangable.

can someone walk me through how to do a lighsaber?

what i do, is

1) i highlight the section i want to be the 'blade' or the plastic 'blade' from the toy saber.
2) i copy it, and paste it in a box bigger than it. (i make 2 of these)
3) i do select all, and create a gaussian blur on it. i made a blur thats small
4) same as 3, but i make a bigger blur
5) i paste what i get from #3 over the original lightsaber
6) i treat #4 as the 'aura' from the blade, so i paste these so they kinda make the saber glow (put the along the edges and whatnot)
7) then i paste fingers over it, or anything to make it look like someones saber.
it turns out like this:

is this correct?

silent assailant: you don't necessarily need to download anything. what sort of background are you looking to create?

the_forbidden-one: to get your signature to show up, upload to it an image hosting site (such as http://www.photobucket.com), and then copy the url of the image (given to you by the site if you use photobucket). go to 'edit signature' in the 'quick links' section of this site and type signature url goes here in the box. click 'save' and you've got a signature.

for image compression, it depends on which program you're using.

sixersballernum3: click on the first frame so that it is active, and add in the text layer. duplicate the first frame in the animation box until you have as many frames as you need for the whole animation. then disable the text layer in the first frame (make it invisible in the layers box). for all the other frames, you need to enable or disable the text layer as you want it to appear.

remember that changes you make in the first frame can effect all the frames that follow it, so be certain that it looks precisely as you want it to before you duplicate it. otherwise you could end up having to redo things many times over.

tsunamiduelist465: many methods could work... as that one seems to have done so. =]

i gave up erasing mostly because it takes a long time, and the magic wand tool can often do a better job (of course there are always tight, tiny little areas that might be missed, but still....).

if you just learn how to work with adjusting the tolerance level and how to change it around so you can add, subtract, or delete selections, you'll find the magic wand to be one of the most valuable tools.

and if you set it to feather 1 pixel you can make the outermost edge transparent once you cut out what you've selected, thus elimnating some of the hard edge.

The best tools for cutting stuff out are the pen tool and the polygonal lasso tool. The pen tool is very good for curves and lines that are not straight, while the lasso tool is very good for straight lines. The pen tool is kind of hard to use for people who have never used it before, so I recommend starting with the lasso tool.

And a tip for the lasso tool:

While you're going around your image with the lasso tool and you make a mistake, most people think that you have to restart. You don't. Just click the "backspace" key on your keyboard, and it will go back to the last time you clicked.

When I started out, I used the magic wand tool, but I don't really like it now, because it leaves behind hard edges, usually a faint outline, and is really annoying to use with a background that either has very similar colors to the thing you're trying to cut out, or has many different complex colors. (Wow, that was a long run-on sentence.)

I only use the magic wand tool if the thing I want to cut out is in a one-color background, or if I'm really lazy.

go to my computer > your main drive (probably c: or d:) > program files > adobe photoshop (or it could just be photoshop) > brushes, and put your new brushes there. then they should show up in the program itself when you want to use them.

to start, i usually make a transparent backround of 468x60.

then i color it, add various brushes, textures, and effects, then throw in the pictues.

quick question;

is there an easier way to make fading from color to color?

i usually just take the original version, select a potion of it with a generous feather (about, 19 for fading) then colorize that portion, and jut paste it back.

is there an easier way in PSP7 (not photoshop)

nope. You'll have to find a bigger one. That's just how it works.

layer masks are just basicly a mask, you could use those to cover up an image instead of erasing and such.

buu:blending is basicly to make one image flow into another to make it seem as one image not 2 spereate images. www.pixel2life.com and search blending, many tutorials.

Blending is interlocking two different image objects and making them sort of set in together.

Blending can come in many different ways. You would simply crop images and put them on one whole image. Or you could make use in filtering the edges and using the blend tools(stuff like blur and sharpen) to swish them in to seem like they are merged.

Usually tutorials would do you better, instead of someone explaining something like that. But if I helped, then thats fine too.

Move your brushes to:
Local Disk C>Program Files>Adobe>Photoshop>Presets>Brushes>Adobe Photoshop Only

Then you can load them.

Layers build on top of all previous layers, they don't start a completely new file.

ok thanx, also how do u merge the images? i made like 3 layers but everytime when i merge them, only the top layer shows.....

also if layers build up on top of each other, how do u combine the background with previously extraced images?

you gotta make it so you can see through the layer. Use a setting like lighten.

Lowering the opacity of the top layer(s) will make the bottom ones show through.

what do you mean by smaller? dimension wise or file size?
file size always gets smaller when you save from .psd to jpg/gif/png because of compression. dimension shouldn't get smaller, the the resolution to 72 pixel/inch if making an online or print with not much quility image.

soo umm you need to find the layer mask button or the eliptical marquee?

layer mask button is in the layers box, and the eliptical marqueee is in the tool bar, if you can't find it then start right clicking the buttons in the tool bar.

I use the clone stamp for unnoticable erasing.

And do you mean take a pic off one thing and put it on another? You have to cut it. There are plenty ways to cut.

Pen Tool
Lasso
Extract

you can go to www.pixel2life.com if you need to learn how to use these tools. This site has great tuts.

no, cause if it's center, then you get like half a pixel or something or the border will be bigger on the top then the rest. Use inside when making a border, outside from anything else like text or something.
