View Full Version : Synchro Monsters: Needed to make a competitive deck?

Hi, everyone. I haven't played Yu-Gi-Oh in a while (the last time I was really into the game was about 3 years ago). Although I haven't really dueled for the past 3 years, I still tried to keep up with the Yu-Gi-Oh world... but then it started getting confusing. Once the synchro monsters made their debut, I started getting lost and just followed Yu-Gi-Oh less and less.
Anyway, I want to get back in the game, but, the only problem is, I feel like in order to compete with all the decks out there, I NEED to incorporate some synchro monsters into my deck. I know the basics of synchro summoning, but I just feel like the synchro monsters would mess up the flow of my deck (I have a Dark Magician/Spellcaster deck, by the way, which is--well, used to be--pretty competitive for a Dark Magician deck). Don't get me wrong, Arcanite Magician is pretty damn awesome, but I just feel like it doesn't really fit the theme of my deck...
Is there a way to keep a deck competitive without putting synchro monsters in it?

Having the toolbox effect at your disposal will definitely help your odds.
Plus, spell-casters have Night's End Sorcerer, which is a pretty neat card.

Spellcasters also have Magical Exemplar, which combos very well with Night's End Sorcerer to get out Synchros fast! If you just came back to the game, maybe pickup the new Spellcaster's Command structure deck; it has quite a few useful spellcasters!

hi, it was kind of the same thing for me ,new archetypes and effects made it quite confusing to follow the game.
Is there a way to keep a deck competitive without putting synchro monsters in it?
yes but it would be quite hard to do.
you said u ran spellcasters ,i can think of a few cards that may help ur build:
Defender the magical knight (http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Defender,_the_Magical_Knight): great stats and useful effect.
Magical dimension (http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Magical_Dimension) great card advantage, but then if you're running spellcaster ur probably running this in multiples.
Secret village of the spellcasters (http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Secret_Village_of_the_Spellcasters) risky but deadly.
hope that helped.

Thanks, everyone. I bought two Spellcaster's Command Structure Decks and have added 2 Defender, the Magical Knights, another Magical Exemplar (I already had one in my deck), 2 Magical Citadels, and 1 Terraforming. I've been trying to update my deck for the new banned list too, so I added 3 Breaker the Magical Warriors and a Call of the Haunted.
As for the Synchro monsters, I might try them out once Arcanite Magician's price drops. I wish they had more Spellcaster Synchro monsters though (not a fan of Tempest Magician; the only decent one is Arcanite Magician).

This is what I need someone to explain to me. A lot of decks in the Advanced forum, from morphtronic decks to twilight decks, have some HUGE extra deck with 15 synchro monsters.
How do they decide what synchros to put in there? It just seems to be totally random to me I need someone to explain it to me. Thanks.

I look through the synchro monsters I have and how often I synchro summon. Using that knowledge I put in doubles or triples of the synchros I have or plan to use. Then I see if there are any good theme-specific synchros and see if they can do the same thing as the generic ones. A good example is that I have a Light End Dragon in my Hopeless build. Yes, it is situational, but I have come across the situation where it helps me too often to let her ago. Another good thing to look at is the levels of your monsters and tuners. If you have a ton of level 4 monsters and only level 2 tuners, you probably only need 1 level 5 Synchro and almost definitely don't need a level 4 synchro. But, level 6 synchros seem to be right up your alley, considering the card ratios. A friend of mine has a spellcaster deck that practically revolves around Tempest since he loves her so much.
Hope I helped, even just a little.

Tempest is actually quite amazing, and if you can get an arcanite for your spellcaster deck... It's GG. Maybe go post the list in the Advanced Deck Discussion Forum and try to get some help on it? Be sure to mention that it is (probably) a moreso budget deck than some others, and mention that you are trying to get some of the more expensive stuff (like arcanite, and you really should try to get a tempest)
