well it depends on what you want to do if you plan on playing in tournaments it's probably best to buy singles if you're just laying casually then I would recommend anything from Ravnica
as far as intro pack you can't go wrong with the white one from m10 considering the foil rare in it pays for the pack it's self

You should probably start with a core set structure deck since it has a sort of quick start guide. There mostly desinged for new players so I would start there.

A Magic 2010 Intro Pack is your best bet to get full-on into Magic! Choose the color you like. I'll break down a 1-sentence summary of each color's philosophy and playstyle (at least, at the very basics):

White likes to take advantage of seemingly-fair statutes it imposes while rushing in with a legion of small but efficient creatures.

Blue likes to study and control the opponent's every action, either slowly chipping away at their life while they're rendered powerless underneath the blue player's card advantage or stopping the opponents' assaults before ending with a huge finisher.

Black likes to kill stuff. A lot. It will pay a high price -- creatures and even life -- to create an advantage over the opponent while decimating the opponent's creatures, hand, and sometimes even deck.

Red likes to end games as quickly as possible by burning the opponent up. Speed is everything to a Red player, often killing the opponent before they get a chance to set up.

Green likes to generate a disproportionate amount of mana and stomp on the opponent with huge creatures.
