Like the title says, I'm planning to start the game back up after being gone for over a year. I've been reading what I can, and it seems that either Blackwings or Synchro-Cat would be a good deck to get started with again. I'm just trying to figure out how boths deck work, since I have not been able to find anything about how either plays, just decklists. Any advice is greatly appreciated, along with any kind of insight to the way both decks play, or even different ways the decks can be made, since the lists I've found are more or less all the same. Thanks in advance :).

I would just start slow and work your way up.
Synchro cat is basically what the title says. You use the monster 'Rescue Cat' which has the effect of tributing itself to summon 2 level 3 beast type monsters. Those 2 beast type monsters are commonly 2 X-Saber Airbellums. X-Saber Airbellum is a level 3 tuner monster so you can synchro summon fairly quickly.
Use Rescue Cat to build around an OTK which involves a Synchro monsters.
Here's an OTK:
Summon 'Summoner Monk' and discard 1 spell card to summon another 'Summoner Monk'. Summon Monk is a level 4 monster. Summon 'Rescue Cat' and use its effect to special summon 2 'X-Saber Airbellum'. Synchro Summon 'Summoner Monk' and 'X-Saber Airbellum' to summon Dark Strike Fighter. Repeat the synchro summon for another Dark Strike Fighter. Attack Directly with both and tribute both of them to win the duel.

thanks for the help so far. I did look up some things on youtube, and I think I'm getting the jist of it now. Right now I'm leaning more towards Blackwings, just because they seem easier to play to me.

Synchro Cat is the least expensive deck to make so far, so I'd recommend that.
