REPORT OF THE TOURNEY OF ****
Pre Tourney
Alright so this was my first regionals since the era or tsukuyomi and magician of faith, so it's been a long time. Needless to say, I was used to big convention centers and huge crowds. I leave early with Curly hoping to get there before a huge line starts since it caps at 80. We drive up and see a big line of obviously yugioh players, which looks like it's already about up to 50. Me and Curly find Mike, cut in line and talk with him. No one seems to care so we just stay there so we make sure we get our spots.
Couple minutes later, the line fills up to the end of the building and some short, angry asian woman comes out and starts barking orders. I figured she might just be trying to get everyone's attention acting like a *****, but nah, that was all her. Pretty much the rest of the day she would yell, tell people to get out of the isles, sit down, stop talking, etc etc. And she wasn't the good kind of asian girl either. I have a thing for asian girls, so it doesn't take much for me to find one attractive. I think for her, I'd have to find fish / gremlins hot to be impressed with her, lol.
Anyway, lots of waiting in line for hours till they finally let everyone in at like 12, we sit down, listen to more angry asian woman BS, everyone seems uptight and they make us sit in assigned seats. No walking around trading / and apparently we can't sell cards there. They pass out our 5 packs which I found kind of fishy, as no one within a 10 yard radius of me pulled ANYTHING worthwhile.
Not that it's easy to pull anything worthwhile, since it's raging battle, but seriously, I don't think I even saw any ultras pulled. Most of the people there seemed alright though minus the nerd stench, so I guess that was a plus. The worst was when everyone was crowding around for pairings, **** was making my hair curl and the plants in my deck wilt.
Which btw, I was running a new experimental version of my plants. I've topped or won my locals a lot lately with a version of debris hime I had been running, and I dunno why I didn't stick with it, but for SOME reason, I decided I was gonna try to run dark armed debris using things like evil thorns / super solar nutrient. Atleast I learned a lot from the tournament about what I needed to change with the deck so I have a MUCH stronger skill drain variant of the same deck in the works now.
Without further ado, here's the tourney report:
MATCHUP RUN DOWN
Round 1:
I'm seated with a guy who seems alright, we talk for a bit before they start time, I make some comments about random deck types to see his reaction, noticed he didn't say much in response to blackwings so I figured he was probably playing them. Probably should have considered that more in my first play but yeah:
Game 1: I open with a good hand, lonefire blossom, monster reborn, evil thorns, creature swap, brain control, and DAD. I play evil thorns intending to use whichever one he doesn't kill for lonefire blossom and drop DAD. I end with 2 thorns on the field expecting to take a little damage. He starts, plays whirlwind, shura, gale, bora, kills my thorn, summons gale, etc etc. I get OTKed. ****. Shoulda just played lonefire right off the bat but I wasn't expecting that.
I side in some anti BW stuff and play him again.
Game 2: I win. Mostly tytannial does all the work.
Game 3: I open with no traps even though I sided in 4 extra ones. Proceed to get BW ***** again after a few turns.
Played him a bunch after the match and won 4 times in a row, I was mad the results weren't reflected in the real match but he was impressed with the idea. Cool guy atleast though so I didn't mind losing.
Round 2:
Another blackwing player, I don't remember much other than almost winning when I had a huge hand advantage and he had no field but me not being able to draw any monsters. He eventually gets some blackwings and I can't do much because i have no bodies to summon. Sigh luck.
Round 3:
Glad beast player, kinda hyper kid but he was ok.
Nobleman of extermination destroys solemns and war chariots. Easy pickings after that. Lots of "WHAT DOES THAT CARD DO" and "playing that deck, you must just be here to have fun today". No I'm playing a pro deck, just trying to be innovative and try something not meta for once damnit.
Anyway, as usual, nobleman wins me the game in the end because my monsters are stronger than glads and tytannial laughs at glads.
Round 4:
Nother glad player, he doesn't know the deck well and doesn't even know about priority or a lot of rulings, easy pickings.
Round 5:
Another glad beast player, much better than the other 2 I played. In the end, nobleman of extermination comes through for me again vs them. I get a gigantic hand advantage game 3 thanks to debris dragon and have treeborn in grave and dark dust spirit in hand, he can't keep field presence at all and dies.
Round 6:
Interesting monarch variant, I'm not too worried since tytannial spanks those decks. Guy is super quiet and won't talk back to me hardly so I just give up and hope he doesn't turn out to be one of those mean rule shark guys.
Game 1: He sets 4 traps and a defense monster. I don't have a lot to work with in my hand so I know whatever I do will get countered and I'll be at a disadvantage, so i try to play defensive. I pick one of the random 4 with nobleman and hit solemn, he removes one from deck so I know he has another set. I can't do a whole not once monarchs start coming out. He flips 2 reckless greeds after I black rose bomb his field, sets a card, flips it and it turns out to be mask of darkness, gets back reckless. I lose because I just don't have enough options.
Game 2: First turn I foolish a dandylion, drop lonefire and end up with a field of tytannial and 2 lonefires. I set divine wrath and end. He tries something and divine stops it. Next turn I summon evil thorns, sac both of them with lonefires, and I have a field with 2x Tytannial, a 3100 attack botanical lion, and 2 lonefires. Easy win after that.
Game 3: I get tytannial out early, 3 evil thorns in grave. DAD drops and wins me the match.
Round 7:
Me vs Twilight. Really cool guy, he seems more relaxed than everyone else and I can joke with him. We both know regardless of the outcome, we get a nats invite, so we're just having fun. Really good games between both of us.
Game 1: I get a huge field at some point and he has 4 cards in hand. I have goyo tytannial 2x lonefires and something else. He drops gorz and I kill him, steal with goyo. Game's in the bag with me sitting at 5000 something and a huge field. He rams his token into tytannial and double honests, I lose out of nowhere.
Game 2: I get a pretty big advantage left again and he's trying really hard to get the 4th lightsworn for JD. We have a big crowd watching and I have people commenting on how crazy my deck is. Super Solar Nutrient and evil thorns comes through and gets me lonefire and tytannial, I'm doing pretty good and winning. He gets JD out but he's too low on life, but I don't have a way around his 3000 attack. I start defending waiting for the deck out and then realize he hasn't been milling for JD for 2 turns. I don't really care and was gonna let him just mill the stuff he forgot but a judge is right there and says it's a game loss. Guy I'm playing agrees and apologizes. I felt kinda bad getting an easy win but whatever.
We go into time right off the bat game 3.
Game 3: He opens with garbage, I have dark dust spirit and later get treeborn frog, which is AMAZING together, especially vs lightsworn. Unfortunately, he summons garoth, his only beater, brain controls whatever monster it was I had and hits me for 1850 since I don't have any defense. The match is easily mine because he has JD JD necro gardna and DAD in hand. I got one more turn to do over 1850 and then defend myself, but I just don't have any options. Drew into treeborn frog that turn. I lose in time.
Overall Summary: Was a fun tournament despite the nagging and *******g from the tournament organizer. I was glad Gille from E&E was there since he actually knows his ****, unlike the other judges. I wouldn't go to Apex again probably just because of the treatment. I think regionals really should be in convention centers, but if it's all we can have right now, I'll take it.
Pros:
Playing a debris hime DAD deck and almost going 5-2 if it weren't for time.
Getting a nats invite.
Chilling with team STD.
1 hour of sleep tournament performance!
People commenting on how cool my deck was, I like bringing something new to the table.
ALL E&E PLAYERS ATTENDING GETTING AN INVITE
Cons:
Angry Fish Woman
Slow start
Schlotskies costing so damn much for so damn little
Random being OTKed when you have a great hand / field advantage
Drawing into 2 evil thorns and no super solar nutrient.
