View Full Version : Which starter will you choose this time around?

FlareWingman

Just like the title says, what starter will you choose for these 2 games (Heart Gold, Soul Silver):
-Cyndaquil
-Totodile
-Chikorita

I think I am gonna choose cyndaquil...For some reason I like most of the fire starters of the games.

redshift71388
05-13-2009, 02:09 PM
Fire! Cyndaquil has always been my favorite Johto starter. And he's useful against more Johto Gym types than the other starters. Or should I say, the only one that has type advantages over any Johto Gym.

chaosmage

Chikorita probably. I always used it in GSC so I see no reason to change that now.

Totodile. Blue version and water Pokemon every time for me.

Totodile for sure. Then if I get the other game or if I restart I'll use Cyndaquil.

05-13-2009, 04:43 PM
Cyndiquil. Not only is it one of the coolest pokemon in the game, but it's very good for gyms. Plus, it was my first pokemon I ever had in any game.

If I get Soul Silver as well, I'm getting Totodile, just because Chikorita makes it near impossible to beat the gyms.

Totodile FTW

I be picking cyndiquil because it pwn way to much and it was my first ever pokemon.

Exo
05-13-2009, 08:09 PM
Cyndaquil probably. I love the Fire Starters, except for Torchic. I picked Treecko that gen.

Or Chikorita. Razor Leaf that early in the game is awesome.

05-13-2009, 11:17 PM
Cyndaquil due to the lack of fire Pokemon throughout the play.

chaosmage
05-14-2009, 10:12 PM
Meh, the fact that chicorita sucks against the gym leaders never really bothered me since I could just use other poke's for the early ones, like Geodude/Graveler. I might wind up picking Totodile instead, but I just like Meganium more then Feraligatr.

Totodial for sure, it was my starter back when I first played silver (which was achally believe it or not my very first pokemon game ever...) aw Silver...my absoulte perfect game...full pokedex...great team...then it all erased...all I needed was a celibi...but I never got it...so Soul Silver, here I come

Cyndaquil.

How else am I gonna get a Typhlosion? :p

Chikorita, FTW! I've used Cynadaquill and Totodile before, but I don't think I've ever done a playthrough with Chikorita, so I'm going to give it a shot this time around. If that Blsprout/Onix trade is still in the remakes, I may have to take it to beat Falkner. lol

I'm gonna pick up both versions of the game, using HeartGold as my main one. I'll probably start with Totodile, and transfer a Cyndaquil and Chikorita from the SoulSilver before starting up with Cyndaquil in that one.

Hyper Knight
05-20-2009, 02:52 AM
Cyndaquil, hands down!

I'm honestly not sure. Fire seems to be the easy choice. That and I can probably just trade for a fire type so I'm not really worried. I'll probably get the other two. Besides, I already have Typhlosion in Platinum.

B. Rock
07-12-2009, 04:05 AM
Most likely gonna go with Totodile and name it JIG DANCER. Ever since I saw the anime episode way back when; when Ash got a Totodile and everytime he let his Totodile out the Pokeball and it danced, I made it a tradition to name every Totodile I got afterwards that. Pokemon Crystal only helped since they actually gave him a dancing animation there. ;D

'Course I can't remember if I can even fit that entire name there, I prolly made that name without any spaces or skipped out on the, "E". ;x

Chikorita because I love grass types.

Totodile because it's cute.

08-12-2009, 04:58 PM
I'm not quite sure which one I will use, but if I had to pick one, these are the reasons why:
1. Cyndaquil, because Typhlosion is a badass. Cyndaquil also has the best type-advantage for early gameplay.
2. Totodile, because it will be the most useful starter throughout the game.
3. Chikorita, because it will be the funnest and most challenging starter in the early game.

Cyndaquil is my starter of choice--I always do my first playthrough of a particular set of games with a Fire starter. And Cyndaquil is only second to Charmander when it comes to my favorite starter Pokemon. I'll be using it on HeartGold. But on SoulSilver, I'll be using Totodile.

Chaostamer
10-28-2009, 09:07 AM
I started with Chikorita in Silver version, so that's my pick, just for nostalgia. Although it's probably going to end up with a defensive/support set, something of a weird role for a starter.

Sephirtoh_Masamune
10-30-2009, 11:49 AM
I shall be choosing Chikorita. For the sheer fact that it makes the game harder.

To help my hardness of the game even more. I'll pick 5 more pokemon to make a 6 man team. I shall raise the 6 man team evenly. This way, they will all be around the same level. No one weaker/stronger than the other. It'll divide the overall experience in-game and therefore make it that much harder.

Cause honestly, what's the game for if you just breeze through it the first time. =)

Wait--that makes the game harder? Really? That's what I've done with my teams since the original Gold/Silver (in the first-gen games, I abused the Rare Candy glitch, so they don't count :D). I always thought it made the games easier, having a variety of options for any situation, as well as plenty of support in case your main battler of the moment goes down...

I always thought it made the games easier, having a variety of options for any situation, as well as plenty of support in case your main battler of the moment goes down...

Well, If you only raise 2-3 Pokemon then the experience that they receive is much greater and therefore will make them stronger than the in-game pokemon you will encounter.

If you raise 6 Pokemon, that spreads the Experience pretty thin, and therefore you'll most likely be JUST at the level of the other Pokemon in-game, or even weaker than some Gym Leaders. Which does tend to make the game harder.

Now if you only raised 1 Pokemon, that doesn't make the game really that difficult at all. That 1 Pokemon will be receiving ALL the experience and will guaranteed be stronger than any in-game Pokemon you'll likely to be facing.

In this instance, say you pick Chickorita. By the time you even reach Falkner and his bird Pokemon, you'll probably have a pretty strong Bayleef. Which, even if it is weak to flying types, will still be strong enough to withstand those hits. Then, after you whoop Falkner and his 2 birds...what's next? Nothing all that hard I guarantee you. You'll then have an experienced Meganium...and will only get stronger from there. Not to mention if you do like some of our Pojo'ers(me included), and EV train your Pokemon with the nature you wanted right from the get-go. Which just makes the game that much easier.

I was never consistent on which type started I picked.

Blue - Charmander
Gold - Cyndaquil
Saphire - Mudkip
Pearl/Platinum - Turtwig

I'll probs still go for cyndaquil, but I'll probably not use it through the game. I'll just dump it in a box and train some caught pokemon.

Then again Totodile gets all the useful HM moves

I am going to go with Totodile because I usually always start with the water types, and since alot of the gyms in the game can deal decent damage to water types I pick Totodile because I think it makes the game a little more challenging than picking cyndaquill who can just beat every Gym in the game very easily.

VegitoTheMaster
02-18-2010, 06:12 PM

Cyndaquil. Because it's pure awesomeness, it's a fire-type, Typhlosion is even more awesome, plus it was the first Johto starter that I managed to acquire in Diamond. After I beat the game I'm going to trade all three legendary dogs (as I've always called them, I think they're called the legendary beasts now?) and the two other starters over onto the game just for the heck of it. I wonder what it would look like having Suicune follow you around? Or Raikou? Or Entei? Or Typhlosion...

Can't wait for this game. Good thing that I didn't waste all my money on Yu-gi-oh cards this month...

Pokemon Yellow. They already made an Electric starter, technically.

They didn't really give a choice on yellow. You were forced to grab a Pikachu and nothing else. Considering you could camp Viridian Forest and grab a Pikachu in Blue and Red makes Yellow kinda lame...

Jolteon

But Pikachu didn't follow you around when you caught one in Red/Blue.

Keep in mind that that was the 1st Generation, they didn't have near the abilities in design that they do today. Just be happy they'll giving the following pokemon idea another chance.

The problem with Cyndaquil is that Typhlosion's movepool is terribly lacking. I know it's just for in-game, but I've never been able to bring myself to field a team loaded down with filler.

I'm using Cyndaquil (currently is Quilava... timid nature). From what I read on serebii, it looks like a strong move. Never actually used it though.
I may have a few problems until lvl 35, because his normal atk sucks. I initially wanted to use Houndoom, but ya can't get him till later.

What I'm having problems with is the rest of the team, as the pokemon I want, I can't get till later, like Lanturn. And I always use Gengar, so I don't wanna use that again. My favorite grass types aren't available until later in the game, unless I trade something over from Platinum...so Breloom and Leafeon are out of the question till later. Perhaps... Victreebel? Vileplume?

I'll most likely use a Jolteon for electric, as Ampharos is just too slow for my tastes.

For water... Gyarados is what I always use, so maybe I'll go for Slowbro.

I might use Mamoswine for Ice type... and Ground. That'll depend on how easy it is to make a pokemon relearn a move. (Ancient Power).

I plan on using Yanmega too... with Xatu as my flying slave.

You can catch Chinchou in Olivine City after you have four badges, so that's still fairly early.

And there's no need to make Piloswine relearn Ancientpower--Mamoswine is available in the Johto Pokedex. So is Yanmega, actually.

I think I'd like to try Chikorita this time around. I've used cyndaquil and totodile many times before in Gold so i'd like to change it up a bit. I'm sure with the now twice as many moves and such it'll be easier to use than it used to be in Gold and Silver. Plus there are plenty of pokemon you can catch to compensate for its lack of type advantages over gym leaders.

Currently, I got Bayleef level 17, brave, and the traded Onix level 13, hasty since thats the only nature you can get it with, and i'm just leaving Violet City.

I chose Chikorita (now a Lv 20 Impish Bayleef named Herby, lol) because I already trained a Feraligatr and a Typhlosion with good egg moves on D/P/Pt. I have never raised a Chiko before, because I love the other 2 starters more.

So instead of ending up with something I always chose in the past that will have a blah moveset, I went with Chiko for something new and that will benefit my overall collection of trained Pokemon :)

You're 14 and outgrowing Pokemon? Let me just say--you're probably among the youngest here (and none of us have outgrown it). But then, you weren't exactly the right age when Pokemon was huge anyway, so I guess it's not the same for you.

i started pokemon in 1999 i prefer the show
i started yu-gi-oh in 2003 and i prefer yu-gi-oh
i sort of like chaotic which isnt popular i started this year which was a bad time

False.

I don't know where you think you're posting, but this is a forum about Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver--video games in the series. The show is completely irrelevant to this topic. And a couple relevant points on the subject:

The game series came first--everything else was just expansion of the franchise that the games started.
Nintendo has always been in charge of Pokémon, since it's a Nintendo-owned series.
Pokémon actually has quite a following among university students and has become very complex and strategic--y'know, for a "kids' game".

Oh, and who are you to be telling others to get a life? You're 14; by definition, you have no life. You're far too young to be so judgmental.

(Also, irony: the fact that this poster's screen-name is "hugepikachufan"--especially considering that he joined a mere two months ago, but claims to be "outgrowing" Pokémon.)

Originally the card game was owned by Wizards. Which brings me back to my previous point: that which is most relevant in this forum is the video game series. I couldn't care less about the TCG.

And you're arguing that the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG is more strategic than the competitive Pokémon scene? Debatable. Yu-Gi-Oh! relies upon luck more than competitive Pokémon, though.

And no, the "sad" thing here is not the video games I choose to play (seriously?!) but that you have such terrible grasp of English, even though your profile suggests that you're from England.

Seriously, you're fighting a losing battle here. Give it up; you're wrong.

Edit: Oops. Turns out that Wizards didn't even own the TCG; they merely distributed it, which, actually, only supports my point anyway. Thanks, Fluffanator! You're groovy.

And I'll say this again, I couldn't care less about the Pokémon TCG. The comparison being made was between the competitive aspect of the video game (which is, I remind you, the purpose of this board) to the Yu-Gi-Oh! card game.

My first playthrough in any generation is with a Fire Pokemon. So I started with Cyndaquil.

Right now, I'm taking things pretty slow (school's keeping me busy), so my team only consists of Cyndaquil, Staryu (Pokewalker), Elekid (Pokewalker), and Heracross at the moment. Although I'm walking around with Togepi to get it to evolve, and have Bellsprout as my cutter.

Heracross spends most of his time on my Pokewalker, since I can just take that anywhere and gain some EXP without actually playing.

Cracka2daMax
