Chapter Four: The Regionals Begin
It was the day of the Domino City Duel Monsters Regional Tournament. Everyone who was participating had arrived at the new Domino Dome, a recently built stadium for public duels and tournaments. Duel Discs were finally being released to the public, not just to those that were in Kaiba’s last two Battle City Tournaments.
Yugi was at his place in ringside seats. The main room of the Domino was being used for the tournament. This was also the most expensive room for rent, since this one was the most impressive, built in the style of the Battle Royale that decided who would duel who in the first Battle City Semi Finals, only the dueling platforms weren’t as high up, only to about 15 feet, and the platforms didn’t raise players lost Life Points. There was also a big screen TV for the members of the audience who were not high enough in the stands to see what was going on.
Each ringside seat had its own miniature TV monitor and headphones. Yugi looked down at his monitor, which was showing the same thing on the big screen monitor, who would duel who and in what order. This is what it said:
1st Round: Joey Wheeler VS Rex Raptor
2nd Round: Seto Kaiba VS Burns Charcoal
3rd Round: Mai Valentine VS Weevil Underwood
4th Round: Yugi Mouto VS Mako Tsunami
Yugi looked down the rows. Right next to him on his right was Joey. On his left was Rex Raptor, a Duelist who uses a Dinosaur Monster-based deck. He was wearing a light yellow shirt, a green jacket, light brown slacks and shoes, brown hair with a cow-lick dyed purple and a red stocking cap. On the other side of Joey was Burns, who was rather muscular and well built, and wearing all red and black hair that looked like burned charcoal. Not much was known about this duelist except that he was known for using a Burn Deck, which uses cards that do direct damage to the opponent’s Life Points.
On the other side of burns was Weevil Underwood, an Insect Duelist who was known to even go so far as to cheat to win. He had yellow glasses with a yellow beetle decoration in between the glass, light blue hair, light green tennis shoes, shorts, and long-sleeve shirt with a black beetle picture on the front. After Weevil was Mako Tsunami, a master fisherman and Ocean Deck user. He wore a light blue head band with a white wave pattern, tanned skin, black pointed hair from never combing it, and, unlike the last time Yugi saw him, in ocean blue sandals, blue jeans, and a blue t-shirt. Sitting Next to Mako was Seto Kaiba, in the long white over coat, and black boots, and long sleeved pants and shirt that he worn during the his first Battle City Tournament. Everyone, including, was very tense.
The chair next to Kaiba, which was supposed to be holding Mai, was empty. Yugi looked up into the stands. In the first row, right above and Joey, was Yugi’s Grandfather Solomon Mouto, Duke, Tristan, and Rebecca Hawkins, a young blond girl in pigtails a couple of years younger than Yugi who, in America, was a Dueling Prodigy. Even though she was twelve years old, she could beat the best duelists in America without a problem. Bakura was there as well. Tea was nowhere to be seen.
Yugi sighed heavily. Then the announcer spoke. “Ladies and gentlemen, we are sorry for the delay. It turns out that one of our duelists, Miss Mai Valentine, will be unable to participate,” At this there were several groans from the crowd. “But,” the announcer continued, “Miss Valentine made sure that a replacement, representing her, will take her place in the tournament. We give you, Miss Setnna Huroshi!” With this a girl with black hair in a ponytail, a black mini skirt, white high heel shoes, and one of those white sleeveless shirts that start above the naval walked in wearing a duel disc and sat down in the empty seat next to Kaiba.
“Alright now,” the announcer continued, “Let the tournament, BEGIN!” With this the crowd burst into cheering. When everyone calmed down the announcer went on, “And now, for the first duel of the Regional Championship, JOEY WHEELR VS REX RAPTOR!” The dueling platforms lowered down as Rex and Joey got out of their seats. They inserted their decks into the deck slot, stepped onto the platform, which rose up to 15 feet, and then their duel discs snapped into Dueling Position. It was time to Duel!
“Alright Wheeler, I’ll start first, by putting one card face-down and ending my turn,” “All right then Rex; I summon my Axe Raider in attack mode!” A man in barbarian-like armor and carrying a large axe-appeared. “Axe Raider, Axe Slashing Attack!”
Axe Raider: Earth Attribute, Warrior Type, Attack: 1700, Defense: 1100, Level 4, No effect
“Axe Raider, attack!” called Joey and the holographic Axe Raider flew towards the face-down monster and swung his axe. A large creature in a light green football uniform with red shoulder pads and helmet appeared from the card, a Battle Footballer!
Battle Footballer: Fire Attribute, Machine Type, Attack: 1000, Defense: 2100, Level 4, No Effect
The Axe Raider’s axe bounced off of the robotic quarterback’s armor, which then tackled Axe Raider back to Joey’s side of the field. Joey then lost 400 Life Points.
Joey: 7600 Rex: 8000
“I’ll lay two cards face-down and end my turn!” Rex then laughed as he drew his card. “Oh, you’re in trouble now Wheeler, because now I sacrifice my Battle Footballer to summon my Dark Drikeratops in attack mode!” A large Dinosaur with a yellow bird-like beak, dark purple claws and feathers around its neck, and dark green skin appeared.
Dark Drikeratops, Earth, Dinosaur, 2400, 1500, Level 6, Effect: Trample
“Now Dark Drikeratops, destroy his Axe Raider now!” The Drikeratops moved in, and snatched up the Axe Raider with its beak and ate it in one bite. Joey was now down by 700 Life Points. “And since my Monster has the power of trample, it has the ability to do damage, even if the monster that it destroys is in Defense Mode! Hehehe.”
Joey: 6900 Rex: 8000
Joey drew his card, and then declared, “All right Rex, get ready to be put into a world of hurt! I summon, Tribe-Infecting Virus!” Suddenly, a bunch of slime green colored monsters appeared.
Tribe Infecting Virus, Water, Aqua, 1600, 1000, 4, Effect: Discard 1 card from your hand and declare 1 type of monster to destroy all face-up monsters of the declared Type on both sides of the field.
“Oh no!” Rex whimpered. “Now,” Joey commanded, “I activate my Tribe-Infecting Virus’ special ability! I’ll discard one card from my hand,” Joey takes his Jinzo card from his hand and puts it into his Graveyard pile, “And the Type that I choose to destroy is, the Dinosaur type!” The green creatures then suddenly turned micro-scopic size and flew into Dark Drikeratops’ mouth, which then immediately began to move around in pain and giving off savage dinosaur cries and then fell to the ground and died. The body disintegrated and the green creatures returned to normal size.
“Now I’ll play Monster Reborn, to resurrect, Jinzo!” Then, from Joey’s graveyard, came a tall robotic creature with a man-like head, only red colored robotic sensors for eyes and a large device on the mouth area, it also had a humanoid shape and a long metal robe.
Jinzo, Dark, Machine, Atk: 2400, Defense: 1500, Level: 6, Effect: As long as this card remains on the field, the effect of all Trap Cards on the field are negated.
“Tribe-Infecting Virus, attack him directly with Infection claw, followed by yet another direct attack by Jinzo, with Cyber Shock!” Then the green virus creatures attacked Rex and slashing him with their germy claws, followed by Jinzo creating a black ball of Psychic energy and firing it at Rex, hitting him directly.
Joey: 6900 Rex: 4000
“Heh, heh, heh, you’re turn Rex!” Rex drew his next card, then he laid a Magic Card down in the Magic/Trap card Zone saying, “I activate the Magic Card: Swords of Revealing Light!” Many magical swords made out of pure light flew from the holographic card and surrounded Joey and his two monsters. “Next I’ll summon this to the field, Gagagigo!” A large, green, humanoid shaped lizard wearing yellow cloth bands that went from its wrists to its elbow, and also covering its feet and wearing one as a loincloth appeared. Two spikes were protruding from its shoulders, knees, and elbows.
Gagagigo, Water, Reptile, Atk: 1850, Defense: 1000, Level: 4, No Effect
“Now Gaggigo, destroy Wheeler’s Tribe-Infecting Virus, NOW!” The lizard jumped up and slashed all three of the viruses with its claws. “And now I end my turn Wheeler. Nahaha!”
“I draw,” Joey looked at his hand, it wasn’t too promising. “I’ll end my turn by activating one of my two face-down cards: Scapegoat!” Four little goat token creatures appeared, an orange one, a blue one, a pink one, and a red one.
Scapegoat, Quickplay Magic Card, when this card is activated, you cannot summon any monster in the same turn (including Flip Summon and Special Summon). Place 4 “Sheep Tokens” (Beast-Type/Earth/1 Star/Atk 0/Def 0) in Defense Position on your side of the field. The tokens cannot be used as a Tribute for a Tribute Summon.
“Heh, that’s all that you CAN do isn’t it Wheeler?” Rex sneered as he drew his card, “HAH! And now I have just the card that will defeat you, I play Ultra Evolution Pill!” “Oh no!” Joey yelled. Then a large holographic pill that was dark pink on one half, and light purple on the other appeared.
Ultra Evolution Pill, Normal Magic/Spell Card, Offer 1 Reptile-Type monster on your side of the field as a Tribute. Special Summon 1 Dinosaur-Type Monster from your hand.
The pill flew into Gagagigo’s mouth, which then instantly began to glow, grow, and transform. In the meantime, Rex removed his Gagagigo monster card from his Monster Card Zone, placed this in the Graveyard, and then pulled a new dinosaur monster from his hand and placed it on the field, and then declared, “I Summon: DARK TYRANO!”
The humanoid-lizard had completely transformed now. In its place stood a tall black Tyrannosaurus Rex with red marking here and there. It gave a great roar, causing the audience to tremble.
Dark Tyranno, Earth, Dinosaur, Atk: 2600, Def: 1800, Level: 7, Effect: If all of your opponent’s monsters are in defense position, this monster may attack directly.
“Dark Tyranno, destroy Wheeler’s Jinzo now!” Rex commanded. The great beast moved in and swallowed Jinzo whole. Then Rex continued, “I’ll summon Hyper Hammerhead to the field and end my turn.” Joey drew his card, sighed and played it in face-down defense position, followed by playing Pot of Greed, drawing the two cards from the effect, and played them both face-down.
“Alright Wheeler, now I’ll summon my Mad Sword Beast in attack mode!” Now, my Hyper Hammerhead, with 1500 attack points and the ability to send any monster that it destroys in battle to the owner’s hand will attack first, followed by my Mad Sword Beast, which has 1400 attack points and the ability to do damage while the opposing monster is in defense mode, or trample, both my Hammer Head and my Beast attacking a Scapegoat, followed by a Direct Attack by my Dark Tyrano, hahaha!”
Hyper Hammerhead, Earth, Dinosaur, Atk: 1500, Def: 1200, Level: 4, Effect: Any Monsters destroyed in battle by this card are returned to their owner’s Hand at the end of the damage step.
Hyper Hammerhead looked like a light brown Velociraptor with a spike coming out of the back of its head and a snout shaped like a hammer.
Mad Sword Beast: Earth, Dinosaur, Atk: 1400, Def: 1200, Effect: Trample
The Mad Sword Beast looked like a dark brown rhino with a curved sword blade for a horn and a green turtle-like shell with spikes coming out of the ends that looked like swords.
First the Hammerhead whacked its head over a Scapegoat, destroying it, and since it was a token, it couldn’t be returned to the hand. Then the sword beast slashed through another token, destroying it and dealing Joey 1400 Life Points of direct damage.
Then the Tyranno came in, trying to slash Joey, but then he activated his face-down Trap Card, which was free now that Jinzo was gone. “Activate Trap: Magic Arm Shield! This normal Trap forces you to attack anyone of your creatures that I want, and I choose your Mad Sword Beast!” Then a dark red shield appeared which opened up and a long claw-arm shot out, grabbed the sword beast, and pulled it right in front of the Dark Tyranno’s attack, destroying it. “Oh, and one more thing Rex, you are the one who receives the damage.”
Joey: 5500 Rex: 2800
“Now it’s my turn Rex. First I play Change of Heart, to steal your Hyper Hammerhead, and then I sacrifice it and my face-down monster, Gearfried the Iron Knight, to summon my favorite card: Red Eyes Black Dragon!” The two monsters vanished and in their place stood a great black dragon with Red Eyes. “You remember this, don’t you Rex, it’s the Red Eyes that I took from you back at Duelist Kingdom! Anyway, I play one more card face-down and I end my turn.”
“Bad move you dunce, your Red Eyes is in attack mode, so I can’t attack directly, but I can attack it! Say goodbye to your Red Eyes! Tyranno, attack!” Dark Tyranno charged in to attack, but Joey had other plans, “I activate my Trap Card, Skull Dice, and chain its activation with the Quickplay Magic Card: Graceful Dice!” Two creatures appeared, one in a black mask and wings carrying a big red dice, the other a little angel creature with white wings, a pink bowler hat and suspenders, and carrying a big blue dice.”
“When these cards are activated,” Joey said, “What ever number Skull Dice rolls, that’s how many attack and defense points all of your face-up monsters lose x100, and what ever number Graceful Dice rolls, that’s how many Attack and Defense points all of my face-up monsters get, x100!” First the Graceful Dice dropped its dice, it rolled a 2, Red Eyes gained 200 attack points, becoming equal to Dark Tyranno for the moment, and Skull Dice rolled a 4, dropping the Tyranno’s attack to 2200. The Red Eyes counter attacked by blasting a huge red fire ball at Dark Tyranno, incinerating it.
“I’ll play one monster in defense mode and end my turn,” Rex whimpered. “Joey then summoned another Gearfired the Iron Knight, this time in attack position. The 1800 attack, 1600 Defense Warrior Type-monster sliced through Rex’s 2nd to last Gagagigo, followed by Red Eyes Black Dragon, whose attack and defense points had returned to their original 2400 and 2000, finished off the rest of Rex’s Life Points. Now Joey was moving on to Round Two!

First the Hammerhead whacked its head over a Scapegoat, destroying it, and since it was a token, it couldn’t be returned to the hand. Then the sword beast slashed through another token, destroying it and dealing Joey 1400 Life Points of direct damage.
Then the Tyranno came in, trying to slash Joey, but then he activated his face-down Trap Card, which was free now that Jinzo was gone. “Activate Trap: Magic Arm Shield! This normal Trap forces you to attack anyone of your creatures that I want, and I choose your Mad Sword Beast!” Then a dark red shield appeared which opened up and a long claw-arm shot out, grabbed the sword beast, and pulled it right in front of the Dark Tyranno’s attack, destroying it. “Oh, and one more thing Rex, you are the one who receives the damage.”

“Now it’s my turn Rex. First I play Change of Heart, to steal your Hyper Hammerhead, and then I sacrifice it and my face-down monster, Gearfried the Iron Knight, to summon my favorite card: Red Eyes Black Dragon!” The two monsters vanished and in their place stood a great black dragon with Red Eyes. “You remember this, don’t you Rex, it’s the Red Eyes that I took from you back at Duelist Kingdom! Anyway, I play one more card face-down and I end my turn.”
“Bad move you dunce, your Red Eyes is in attack mode, so I can’t attack directly, but I can attack it! Say goodbye to your Red Eyes! Tyranno, attack!” Dark Tyranno charged in to attack, but Joey had other plans, “I activate my Trap Card, Skull Dice, and chain its activation with the Quickplay Magic Card: Graceful Dice!” Two creatures appeared, one in a black mask and wings carrying a big red dice, the other a little angel creature with white wings, a pink bowler hat and suspenders, and carrying a big blue dice.”
“When these cards are activated,” Joey said, “What ever number Skull Dice rolls, that’s how many attack and defense points all of your face-up monsters lose x100, and what ever number Graceful Dice rolls, that’s how many Attack and Defense points all of my face-up monsters get, x100!” First the Graceful Dice dropped its dice, it rolled a 2, Red Eyes gained 200 attack points, becoming equal to Dark Tyranno for the moment, and Skull Dice rolled a 4, dropping the Tyranno’s attack to 2200. The Red Eyes counter attacked by blasting a huge red fire ball at Dark Tyranno, incinerating it.
“I’ll play one monster in defense mode and end my turn,” Rex whimpered. “Joey then summoned another Gearfired the Iron Knight, this time in attack position. The 1800 attack, 1600 Defense Warrior Type-monster sliced through Rex’s 2nd to last Gagagigo, followed by Red Eyes Black Dragon, whose attack and defense points had returned to their original 2400 and 2000, finished off the rest of Rex’s Life Points. Now Joey was moving on to Round Two!
