why is everyone so crazy about The Dark Knight nowadays, I mean sure its cool and a magnificent movie but im kinda getting bored of hearing TDK references everywhere...nothing against you bro...

I could see this as a Manga, how about some guy that steals cards to sell them for cash and eventually finds himself playin the game and liking it.
With time he stops stealing cards and starts his career as a duelist, yeah not real life stuff, more like Yugi's universe.
There you could discuss bribes, Stacking, cheating, and such...

On topic though, Yu-Gi-Oh! the anime is fine the way it is, it'd be boring without the dragons and expensive holograms anyways. And it's unrealistic in anime to deal with the cost of the game when everyone in the series plays it...

I could see this, except not a manga. If casted properly it could be a hit. Put Benjamin Mackenzie as the main character, and chicks will flock to it. Put a shirt-skirted blonde with huge jugs alongside, and you have a non-nerd male crowd. And since it's already about ygo, you have the nerds' attention.
