View Full Version : Why, Takahashi, Why?

Throughout the Battle City stage of the Duelist Manga, Jounouchi and Yugi have been talking about how they are going to duel each other soon. Then, at the end of Battle City, Takahashi shows them gearing up to duel, but never shows the actual duel itself. I find this strange because throughout the tournament they talk about their duel, making the readers look forward to it, but then they never show it. Is there anyone else who finds this annoying and weird? I was like "WTF? Where is their duel?"

It happened in the anime too, but this is pretty much really old news anyways.

There are two reasons why we never see the duel, the first is that Takahashi planned for Battle City to be the Final ever Yu Gi oh stroy and probabiliy felt that the scene of the two about to have their long awaited duel as the sun rises would be a great way to end the series instead o showing yet another duel. Also the duel is supposed to be a private duel between the two friends as there is no-one around so not even the reader is allowed to see. Personally i think it is great.

I've never heard that before, and it really doesn't make sense. The whole point of Battle City was for Atem to regain his memories. It'd make no sense for him to end it before that happened.
The real reason was so that fans could draw their own conclusions. If Yugi lost, it would tarnish his image as the King of Games. But if Joey lost, it would undermine his quest to become a true duelist. There was no good way to do it, so Takahashi left it up to us.

Maybe the duel ended in a draw, Joey said he would only take back the Red Eyes if he could prove he was a great duelist, so he probabily proven that to Yugi during the duel (as well as during the tournament) and got back the Red Eyes even if he won, lost or drew.
Also personally I doubt Joey won, because knowing Joey in would have told everyone that he defeated Yugi, as we know Joey has a porblem with bragging.

Yea Joey must have won that duel, because takahashi always showed the 3 protagonists as a Rock, paper, scissors match.
Yugi beats Kaiba, Kaiba beats Joey, Joey Beats Yugi.

No he doesn't Joey says to Yugi that he would only take back the Red Eyes when he can prove he is a worthy duelist, there is nothing about Joey had to beat Yugi. Still maybe he did in the anime Yugi seems to take a lot of good cards (like Dark Paladin) out before he meets Joey.

The dub is NOT CANNON.
We can't say who won, but originally, the agreement was Joey would get his Red Eyes back after he became a true duelist, and after "Their Finals" in battle city.

Beckett is hilarious, as I've read a few over time while they've sat in a shop and I saw so many mistakes its not funny. I wouldn't trust anything Beckett writes regardless.
Mask of Restrict is a Top Fusion monster of the anime now? Brilliant.
But as it stands, there is no manga nor anime showing of Joey defeating Yugi. Regardless of what Yugi said, Yugi may have won the duel, but because of Joey's fierce dueling he gives him back Red Eyes anyway.
Since anime footage or manga pages of the duel do not exist, you have no right to say that Joey won as a fact, as you cannot provide evidence to proof it.
Joey got back his Red Eyes, that is all we know. He might have won it back, he might have lost but Yugi saw that Joey became a true Duelist and gave it back for respect. Or maybe they're about to duel, but change their minds and go get breakfast and Yugi just gives to him over waffles and thats it.
Without the actual duel existing as proof, you can't say anything as fact, because it doesn't exist.
Just say Joey got back his Red Eyes, no more arguments and everyone is happy.

That is true, but if Joey did lose to Yugi, Yugi may have given it because it was a truly awesome duel for both of them, and Joey may have just taken it because its all he and Yugi needed.
Joey also might have found the answer or the want to have it back cause he found himself a True duelisty while the duel was happening.
We'll never know truly, but we can speculate.
Either he did win it back, or he lost but proved himself a true duelist and earned it back.

Let it remain one of the most ambiguous parts of the Yugioh series. Everything that you guys have said is entirely plausible, so there is no way to assert your opinion as better than everyone else's. This is exactly why no one knows - makes for good discussion. No one knew then, no one knows now, so leave it at that. Theories are fine, but that is all they are, theories.

it wasn't about the duel itself, it was the promise of being friends.
kind of how yugioh R is setup, it was the main points and not the filler.
plus they are friends so they can play against each other anytime.

The same thing happend with the last episode of GX when Judai battled Yugi. But unlike the Yugi/Jonuchi fight we saw them fight, we just didn't see the conclusion

I agree with you. I think Takahashi left the duel out so that the fans could deiced for themselves what happened.

Read somewhere (probably YGO wikia >.>) that Yugi won against Jou and gets Lightning Blade which he uses in YGO R. Jou also never used Red Eyes sooo...I'm guessing canon wise, Yugi won.

Joey Won .
You never see Jonouchi use Red-Eyes after that in the manga aside from the imaginary deck thing vs. Zork. Not even in R.
It's left in the air. The anime just said /**** it/ and gave it back to him.
Anime isn't canon.
Inconceivable

Or... Yugi knows a 2-tribute monster that has 2400 attack isn't worth putting in his deck and threw it away/gave it back to Joey.
Then somehow Atticus Rhodes acquires it.

Yugi beats Joey and Atticus comes along and beats Yugi. Or Joey beats Yugi and Atticus beats Joey. Or Yugi's opponent was Atticus in disguise and he wins.

I think that Takahashi makes it so that we cannot see this duel between Yugi and Joey or the outcome because it does not really matter. In the story, the stakes of the duels are high: someone loses their soul, penalty game, ect. But not in this case. I think he just wanted leave with a calm ending, not ending where you see an intense duel between friends. Yeah, I hope what I just said at least makes a little sense.

Come on people it's soooooo obvious who won. Yugi. Joey can't beat the king of games especially when Yugi has been able the world like a million times through a children's card game( Bond Beyond Time abridged movie) and it is obvious Yugi beat Jaden ( BBT abridged movie again) for the same reason. To beat the King of Games is one task Joey can't do. As for the card, it is Joey's favorite card, Yugi wouldn't really keep it with him, would he?

The point of Battle City was that Jonouchi and Yugi were both trying to prove themselves as "True Duelists" with the new Battle City rules. While this wasn't musch of a character arc for Yugi until the end of Battle City where Jonouchi's life was at risk and Yugi blamed himself for putting his memories and the gods above the promise he made to his friend, this was Jonouchi's character arc where he grew into a duelist worthy of being at the top. In the finals he got recognition from not only Yugi, but even Kaiba and Malik.
He was also the only character that Malik absolutely could not win against. Mai through the game accidentally by summoning Ra, but it was heavily implied that Malik intended for her to try and take Ra the whole time. He was perfectly calm. Against Jonouchi, his only win condition was "Kill him" which nearly failed and was the first person to ever make Malik sweat.
That said, Yugi is still Yugi.
Tl; Dr: I wouldn't say the result of the match-up is really can be called that simply.

it's because we already saw them duel in the battle city arc when joey/jounoichi was possesed so it doesn't really matter that they haven't showed that duel.

This is exactly what I think, and his duel against Marik instantly made him my favorite DM character. Takahashi even stated once that Joey has the best potential as a duelist out of all the characters combined. Yes, he has luckhax sometimes, but he didn't really use any of his cards against Marik that required luck (unless you count Question, but I chalk that as a skillful decision. Graceful Dice doesn't really count for me since all he needed was for Plasma Eel's ATK to be above 500, which he knew was basically guaranteed).
There's also another possibility people aren't thinking of. What if it was a DRAW! I can see it perfectly - one of them goes for the final attack but the other activates some new card that splits the damage among them, dropping both their Life Points to 0.
But, as everyone has been saying at this point, it was meant to be left open for interpretation, so it really just turns out however you believe it turned out.
EDIT: Just realized this was the Manga section, the moves I referenced were from the Anime. My bad. >_<;

That moves on the manga were the same, the only difference is that Marik plays Viser Des instead of Plasma Eal...the same as on Mai duel that he plays both Biser Shock and Viser Des instead of his Holding Arms...
