I haven't got a copy of Colloseum, but I can tell you that it's a bit different from other "Pokemon" games you may have played. It has two modes, Story and Colloseum. In Story mode, you have to fight an evil gang called Team Snagem, who've been "locking the hearts of Pokemon". There's a girl you meet early on who can tell when this has happened to a Pokemon and, when you find one, you have to rescue it by catching it. (NOTE: There are no wild Pokemon in this game so, even though taking another trainer's Pokemon isn't normally allowed, you can only catch the Shadow Pokemon (as they are called) of other trainers - you have a device that turns Poke Balls into Snag Balls, allowing you to do this). Once you've caught a Shadow Pokemon, you need to "open its heart" by using it in battle; until it is fully recovered, it can't gain levels and can only use a move called Shadow Rush.
Anyway, at the end of the day, it's up to you whether or not you want to give it a try - I just wrote a brief summary of what you get in Story mode to give you a little taster. You can find out more here (http://www.serebii.net/colosseum/)

Your Pokemon DO gain levels (and EPs). This really messes up EV training for EPs will be allocated in the wrong stats if you use that Pokemon on your journey (unless you let it battle certain Pokemon that give EPs in the appropriate stats). If you really need that Pokemon to get through the game and you intend on EV training it to add to your team, then make sure it is female so that you can breed for pre-evolutionary forms of it.

They don't have to be female, Marill, just use a Ditto to breed.
I bought Colosseum a few weeks ago, and I like it. It's got Pokemon in it that you'll never be able to get in Ruby/Saphire/FireRed/LeafGreen, such as Sudowoodo, and the GS Starters. These are ONLY available by catching in Colosseum and trading to a GameBoy game. There they can be bred with a Ditto (on FR and LG) and you'll get your own version of it, with your GB trainer number.
It's not possible to mess up the game, Mr. Popo. The worst thing you can do wrong in Colosseum is not catch a Shadow Pokemon, as some of them are only found in 1 battle in the whole game that you canot repeat. But you can just save before the battle, and keep trying until you get it.
My opinion is, if you're a Pokemon fan with a GameCube, buy Colosseum. You'll enjoy it, and you'll be able to fill your Pokedex on the GB games using it.
