Hi all, I'm looking into buying a booster box and i was having trouble deciding which set i shoudl buy? It should be noted that i'm not really looking into tornament play but still wants to play competitively, currently i'm looking at Onslaught, any ideas?

I would not buy Onslaught becuase it rotates out of Standard in 6 months and people are focusing on Mirrodin and Darksteel right now. I would recomend you get a Mirrodin box. It is the most valuable set in standard right now. Having Mox, Platinum Angel, Mindslaver, etc. It has a lot of expensive cards. DS has'nt shown anything worth a great deal and ON is lowing in price.

I say go with the Alpha or Beta booster box. But, if you're cheap, you should get Unlimited. ^_^

Umm, I'm going to go out on a limb and say this guy is a noob and would rather buy a box and be able to use the cards rather then sell his soul for a box of alpha cards.

there is always someone who says that whenever it is aksed what set they should buy...

OH, BUY ALPHA... like your the first one to think that....

I would say darksteel, as it is a really fun set IMO, but since its a small set I would go with mirrodin... unless you want the whole set.... then go darksteel

I would go with Mirridon.

1) It has great cards in the form of Chrome mox, Platniume angel, Mindslaver, Myr Incubator ( for you fun players ) Bosh, Iron Golem, ( used to take home the Extended championships ) and loads of artifacts.
Artifacts go with lots of decks, even decks that don't require artifacts will find something in mirridon.

Each color gets a nice boost in Mirridon as well.
Black: Consume Spirit
Blue: Broodstar
Red: Megatog, atog. Seething song.
White: Good flyers, to an extent.
Green: nothing

Each color got more and less good cards. Each color in Mirridon works better with artifacts. Thats the short end of the stick.

Other great cards are: Exterplaner Lense, Isochrone Scepter, The Spellbombs, Lightning greaves, Loxodon Warhammer.

But if you'r cheap like me, and you'r card shop has a dollar folder of mirridon, buy from that, and by the commons and what not from the box.
I find that everything non-good, but still a good card, ends up in the dollar folder.

Mirridon also has alot of bad commons. Like Woebearer, Wail of the Nim.
I wasn't exactly pleased with my box.

Just my thoughts.

Cabalwannabe,

How could you say that green did not receive any good green cards in Mirrodin?Troll Ascetic, Glissa Sunseeker, Viridian Shaman and Sylvan Scrying are all constructed worthy cards. Heck the Troll Ascetic is arguably the best creature in the entire set!

Plated Slagwurm, Copperhoof Vorrac and Journey to Discovery are also great in casual/multiplayer environments.

I might be the minority on this, but I actually feel green came out the strongest in Mirrodin.

aron fan, you make me laugh. Your entire post doesn't use any punctuation, which is hilarious. You just ramble on and on pointlessly.

Personally, if I were the first poster, I would probably go with Onslaught. Yes, Mirrodin and Darksteel are the new "fad," but Onslaught is good in the sense that it gives new players a taste of what each color does and represents. Mirrodin and Darksteel kind of distorts that by handing out loads of artifacts (not saying they're bad sets), and not really beginner-friendly. I actually started out in Mirrodin and had no idea of what each color really represented and did until I bought some Onslaught stuff.

Once you get a feel for the different colors, try Mirrodin and Darksteel and see how the new artifact stuff blends in, and your understanding of the game will be much greater.

I agree with gumshoes! You should get a DS box because i got one and i made a winning archbound deck See Darksteel Archbound Deck and there are many good cards in the set. :D

Urza,

You'r right, Green did get the goods. Thats what I get When I type whene Im tired.
How could I forget Glissa? Or Molder Slug? (With those two and Viridian Shaman, Green Artifact Control is possible, with just those Three cards.)

Troll Ascetic I like to think is over rated, but its not.
It's just a great solid card.

Glissa is fun just to destroy Artifact-Land with. Not only that, but at a recent type2 tournament, Elves beat affinty with maindeck Artifact hate.
With out Glissa, Molder Slug, and the 'Troll. (yes, I know the 'Troll isn't a elf)

Molder Slug shuts down any deck with only a few artifacts that are needed to help win, not only that, but it has a good body too.

Sylvan Scrying Im going to disagree with you here. Sure it can get a 'Academy, or a 'Coffers, but that's all out side of type2. I tried it in a 'Desire deck, and it was okay, but way too slow. Out of 'Scrying and Journey of Discovery, I would Explosive Vegatation. Yeah, the 'Discovery is good for decks packin lots of land, but I find it a turn too slow. Just my two cents on that, but if anyone can put it to work in a good deck, just tell me, and I'll re-theorize my theory, if needed. (Either the 'Scrying or the 'Discovery)

Either way, I think green got the shaft overall in Mirridon, I stand by that.
But one thing is true, it did get good stuff, but enough to build a Standered legal All Mirridon Deck? Im not sure on this one.

Just to clear this up, I don't hate green. In fact, I almost love it.
I just think that R&D (Bless there hearts) did infact, not throw in enough good green commons. For construction purposes in a Standered legal All Mirridon Deck, that is.
Anyone who wishes to argue this go ahead, I would gladly hear you'r argument. After all, I ALMOST love green, but the key word is 'almost'.
Any other thoughts on Mirridon? No. But ask me what I think of you'r extended decks, (originales please. Or U/G madness) I'de love to hear it, just IM me.

Wow... Thanks for all the replies in just one day. I think i would go with Onslaught/Mirrodin... DS just doesn't cut it for me :p While i'm not a new player (I've been playing since 6th Edition) I still like to think of the color wheel as its displayed in Onslaught... while in Mirrodin theres just a load of artifacts... and lets just say i don't REEEALLY like artifacts that much... So thanks for all your imputs, they were greatly appreciated! :D

green got the most junk I think out of all the colors of mirrodin along with some alright cards.

and to the guy wondering about the scrying its used by urzatron players since it can search for a nonbasic land. most likely the one your missing and you usually are beter off that way then waiting to draw the 3rd one. and it's splash worthy for only 1G. I would use more of em if I would draft em but thats where I'm getting most of my cards at the moment from booster drafts.

If you want I'll post up what seems to be good limited wise in darksteel since that seems to be what we are drafting at the moment. I'll post up working combos I see and the winning style decks. I lost last friday to my friend who drafted 2 juggernauts and 3 echoing ruin and I think 4 vulshock morning stars and a darksteel colosssus along 2 of them 5/5 for RR2 with others but red definitly looks like a strong color for darksteel.

Congrats on the pulls Boshy, good stuff.

As for the 'Scrying, thanks for the help on that, never dawned on me to look for the Urza'tron stuff.

As for the list, no thanks. But thanks anyway.

dont buy a box, its too expensive and you are more than likely to get a total value of cards less than the cost of the box. Nothing sucks more than getting 4 krark's thumb out of the same box.

You can buy Mirrodin boxes for 70 bucks online. I did so over Christmas. I was quite satisfied, having gotten a FOIL Chrome Mox, Oblivion Stone, Chalice of the Void, 3 Isochron Scepters, 2 Glimmervoids, and a Broodstar. So lets see... Foil Mox (w00t) - 50+ dollars. Oblivion Stone, 7. Chalice of the Void, 5. 3 Scepters, 5 total. 2 Glimmervoids, 15 total. Broodstar, 7. So that's about 80. I made my money back and then some, including a hell of a lot of good deckworthy commons. In just one box I've come within inches of completing an affinity deck. As I've been told by many peopple, they were some insanely lucky pulls, but if I had gotten half of that I would have been satisfyed. In other words, if you've got the money, get a box. It's so much fun, just sitting down for an hour and opening pack after pack after pack, not having a clue as to what the next card could be.
