I looked up the top ten Pokemon players in the world and got a list that shows that not only are the top four from the junior division, but six out of the top ten are from the junior division. Did I get that right?

And there's only one master in the top ten?

And all this time I thought the divisions by age were to keep the younger players from being beaten by the older more experienced players. It appears it's just the other way around. What a surprise!

Or perhaps it's just the demographics. There are just so many more junior players than there are senior players that the juniors' sheer numbers allow them to dominate the tournaments. Could that be it?

Here's the list I found. I tried to format it so the data would appear in columns in a table, but couldn't figure out how to do that in this forum:

Rank Name Rating Age Div State Country
==== ==== ====== ======= ===== =======
1 Olivier Marcant 1951.66 JR FR
2 cjnweikn 1944.17 JR WA US
3 Robert Gailor Jr 1936.34 JR PA US
4 Brian Hathaway 1920.44 JR MO US
5 Dylan Bryan 1913.31 SR NJ US
6 Tad Miller 1909.69 JR NC US
7 Drew Faust 1906.54 JR IN US
8 Emmanuel Divens 1905.37 MA MN US
9 Clint Armstrong 1901.93 SR OR US
10 zmirman 1887.78 SR NV US

P.S. I see the second place player is from Washington. I wonder if there's a way to find out where he plays. It would be fun to watch. But not battle!

All age groups only play and earn points within their group.
So, comparing Juniors to Masters is worthless. They don't gain or lose points from each other.

What it means is that the best Junior players are a lot better than the rest of their field, while the best Masters players have more competition keeping them from getting their rating quite as high.

#3 is from my area and has won many of my events in the Junior division.
He is a really good player. And he's better than most Masters. But his rating is so high because he just dominates the Junior field.

OK, I get it. You can't compare apples and oranges.

When a player "graduates" to a higher age division, does s/he take his/her rating with him/him when s/he moves up?

And did I read the list correctly to be showing the highest ranked junior to be from France? Do they have a lot of players over there?

Move ups only occur at the start of the tournament season - whatever age division you start in at the beginning to tourney season is the age division you play in.

The US has the most players (outside of Japan, of course).
France has a healthy Organized Play, but I expect that his ranking number one means that he defeats every single junior player that he faces over there. What would be interesting to see is how far down is the second best Junior player. If no one is close, then it's more a factor of his not having a serious competitor to take points away from him

So, then, does that mean that these ratings are only for a single season?

And everybody starts over at zero at the start of each new season?

Every one starts at 1600 at the beginning of each new season.
It's a zero sum rating. In order for one player to gain points, another player has to lose those same points.
