After reading this article from Mugglenet:
Argus Filch and Arabella Figg-A Connection? (http://www.mugglenet.com/editorials/thequibbler/tq09.shtml)
At the last paragraph or so I came up with my own conclusion-what if Argus Filch is Mr.Tibbles and Arabella Figg is Mrs. Norris.
J.K. Rowling does most things for a reason...perhaps this is one of them? Think about it, a couple that loves cats, and are both squibs-outcasts of the wizarding world that don't quite fit into the muggle world. One is a man seen only during the schoolyear with a female cat, the other is a woman seen only during the summer with a male cat (Obviously one excuse is that there's no reason for Harry to see these people outside of their normal locales but...whatever, for the sake of my guess please.). They both also watch out after Harry.

Wow, you know I've neevr thought of that. It would certainly make a lot of sense, especially to explain why there'd bee such intelligent cats hanging around where-ever Harry is...

That would be a somewhat humerous connection. Another tiny little tidbit is that both of their first names start with the letters "Ar" and both of their last names start with the letters "Fi".

While you're pondering that theory...you may want to check out this extremely long article about...stuff.
The Changling Hypothesis (http://www.redhen-publications.com/Changeling.html)
It's all very confusing but the gist of it is that Voldemort may have 2 half souls, one that cannot die and resides inside other creatures till he forms a new body and the other half inside Harry via Magical contracts, interventions, etc. It also delves deeply into the thinkings of Dumbledore and his relationship with Severus Snape.
Oh and another thing to ponder(Pondering a lot these days, summer, what else is there to do? :p )-There's a Black in every Pure-blood family, and a link to a Black in every wizarding family pureblood or not. So where's Harry's link to the Blacks besides as a Godparent? Perhaps Sirius and James were cousins.

Very interesting theory, Berzerker. I always had a feeling that those squibs had certain links with their pets, but for some reason, I never came to that conclusion. Now the question is, if Squibs can't do magic, can they become Animagi?

Thanks. I was wondering if Squibs could do it as well...but isn't it a combo of potions/magic/and willpower? Potion as a catalyst, magic to infuse the power into you (which could probably be done by anotherperson too, who knows...) and the willpower/mental capacity to control the transformations.

Another interesting idea I haven't given thought about.

In Philosopher's Stone, though, the cat was called Tibbles, not Mr. Tibbles. (there was a Mr. Paws though). Inconsistencies like that in the series bother me slightly.

It doesn't matter because in the Order of the Phoenix Arabella Figg refers to the cat as Mr.Tibbles. An easy explanation for this is that you don't always put a title on somebody when you mention him or her.

Remember how people thought Mark Evans was somebody major in the next 2 books? Let's not have that happen again. Good theories, but possibly, and likely, false.

Well... all I have to say is that all we can do is speculate, and these are the type of things J.K. Rowling does. We have to think like she thinks to try to make predictions.
As for the Filch/ Figg thingy, I find it EXTREMELY possible. How does Mrs. Norris report back to Filch? Why does she (the cat) strike fear into all the kids hearts? Because she can talk to Filch, by transforming.
As for the Changeling Hypothesis, I have read it before and I find it an extremely good (and solid) hypothesis. Only problem is it may be a bit too complicated (not to me, but to other readers) but knowing J.K., who knows?

But the thing is, it was fun to think up theories for ol' Mark "fooled ya!" Evans. I even had my own theory for it! Half the fun of these books is theorizing and overanalyzing. And overanalyzing can be tons of fun! (Ever watch Big O?) In a couple of years, when your children are reading the Harry Potter books (they're going to be classics) for the first time, you'll be able to tell them all the crazy theories and forum conversations you had discussing the books.
Imagine if you were around when LotR was still being written (and for the sake of the topic, the internet exists). There'd be tons of crackpot guesses and theories exchanged between the publications of the books. It's like solving a mystery.
As for the thoery itself, I already gave my views earlier. While it may not be possible, there's definetely something going on with those cats.

Well JKR did say that cats would be important, so it makes sense

Yeah, well upon further reading (read all of 5 again) it doesn't fit how Filch and Figg can be related at all. Figg helps Dumbledore and Filch...you know...unless he's a really good actor or something.

That was the first thing i thought of when i read this topic. It wouldn't fit because Figg is so close to Dumbledore and Filch is not. Most of the time i think he hates Dumbledore for being too soft on the kids. Also, if Filch did like Dumbledore he would not have been so close with Umbridge because Dumbledore (along with the rest of the teachers) disliked her very very much.

Good theory Anz, but I don't think it would work. I don't remember which book, but once when harry was using the map, it stated that Ms. Norris was prowling the halls on some floor. So if Mrs. Figg was Mrs. Norris, wouldn't it say Mrs. Figg, not Mrs. Norris?

That is a fair point. It also stated in Book 4 that "Bartemius Crouch" was in the dungeons, and it didn't say "Alastor Moody" despite he was taking the Polyjuice Potion. So either A.) Crouch, jr. didn't have his potion or B.) The Marauder's Map isn't fooled by potions. I personally think it's the latter, and this is a major flaw to the theory.

This idea contradicts the fact that both Argus Filch and Arabella Figg are Squibs, incapable of doing magic such as becoming an Animagus.

maybe jkr just did this so we would have something to talk and wonder about. you can argue either way. but i agree with buu, the map would say mrs. figg, not mrs. norris.
