View Full Version : [SURVEY] Why do you play?

PJ

Hi again everybody :)

As most of you may remember, I posted up a survey here on Pojo about a month or 2 ago which helped me a lot with my art college assignment. (My project is on the players of YuGiOh, how different they are from each other, and how different they are from people who know nothing about YuGiOh).

Anyways, I need your help with the next stage of my project. It'll only take up a minute of your time, but will be of great help to me.

What I want you to do is answer the following question:

Why do you play?

Simple enough, as I asked it in the previous survey. However, I want you do answer a little differently this time (very important). I want you to try and not mention anything too YuGiOh-specific, like card names and stuff. This is because the artistic piece I intend to create will unconsciously link non-YuGiOh players with YuGiOh players. As soon as they hear anything specific, like the underlined above, most people automatically switch off, believing that they cannot possibly engage in something they don't know about.

So it's simple enough really, you just have to think for a second about what you write.

Should be an interesting read :)

The Intensity of a each different situation, making judgement that mean the difference between life and death. Watching the opposition, waiting for that slight slip up as the tension mounts. The Glee of a game winning move, the rush of pulling one out from behind, the crash when you get it all wrong.
Emotion.

(^.~ hope that helped, see you at PTF)

i play to better myself and my knowledge of the game, thats my most fav. part of the game. i want to some day write articles about things that interest me and yugioh interests me on so many levels i cant explain but i still play as a tournament player would, hard and fast is all my opponent sees lol.

i play this game for the thrill of winning. the anxiaty of anticipation of knowing what the opponent is about to do. the joy of meeting other players who appreciate the game like i do and of course to pass one of the opponents who i have never conquered TIME.

I play because i have to second guess my opponent, lay bluffs, what cards do my opponent holds? How many cards does he use? Will he pretend to play something, but play something else. I guess i like it for the mind games.

I like being competitive, I want to be the best at anything I enjoy doing. I am more interested in the competition aspect than having what people traditionally call 'fun'. I have 'fun' when I am being tested to my limits, that's my definition. I also like to develop my negotiational skills, and get the best deal that is humanly possible.

(Thanks so far everybody)

I play for pretty much the same reason as you PJ. I enjoy the rush or overcoming your opponent's skill with your own. That to me is very fun.

Another survey eh PJ.

Very well.

The reason why I play you ask?

First of all I would like to be honest and say, this game is much easier to understand than any other game you can relate, making it all the more enjoyable to play.

One of the main reasons I play this game is because its so fast.

Example: Activate Raigeki, activate Harpie's Feather Duster, summon Cyber-Stein, pay 5000 LPs, summon Cyber Twin Dragon, activate Limiter Removal, attack -5600, attack again, you lose. *opponent interrupts* Kuriboh XD. *back to me* 0__0;; Play a facedown. I end. *Cyber Twin destroyed*

Stuff like that can really get exciting once you know about it.

I like being creative in games, and this one is no exception. You can create all sorts of different play styles if you feel like it.

Anybody can enjoy it. The design is so simple.

A reason to a much lesser degree: the art style fascinates me. You can be as creative as you want to be, or not as creative. Heck! a bucket of water could be a monster XD. This game is not picky about art style, and I like that.

You get to share some laughs while your playing.

Example: *look at the above example where Kuriboh was activated*

Overall, this game is fun.

Beating pros is fun to a specialy when they ask me to scoop it makes me feel big lol

I play because I find it challenging and fun at the same time. It allows you to meet new people and even become friends with them, and then it becomes way more fun. On top of that, I play because it's entertaining, and the game provides a sense of strategy.

I play because my sons do. My boys got both my brother and I involved. I also enjoy the different scenarios involved with all the different strategies that are played. The game was also easy to learn. After we started going to all the different tournaments we started to get to know everyone involved, so we were able to create new comraderies and make new friends.

At first, when i was younger, i went to a place called armchair commanders in corpus christi playing pokemon. that was the first card game i ever played. then i moved to Los Angeles and stayed in pokemon until yugioh came out. then my big brother got into yugioh, and i stayed in pokemon for a little longer. but everyone was switching over to yugioh so i decided to switch. now i play to see old friends, and just to have fun. now im one of the best at my store and i have almost every playable card in the game.

I think I have already told my reasons on your other survey. Maybe I used the words you are forbidding us to use on this one, but they aren't the main reasons I play.

I simply enjoy this game. The same primordial reason anyone keeps playing a game, be it a videogame, a "regular" card game like poker, hide and seek, whatever. Now, why do I enjoy it? You certainly enjoy a game if you can play it with people you like having around, be it your friends or cool people, which this game provides since it "can't" be played by yourself alone.

I also enjoy the art on this "rectangular pieces of cardboard made with the purpose of playing this game". I know I can't use the plural for "card", but the beautiful art lies there. Since I'm also a videogame player, I can say many videogame players are attracted to a game mainly because of it's graphics nowadays. Altough the game doesn't provide extremely realistic graphics like Crysis where you can actually see a fart distort the air, and neither provides abstract art like a reinassance (sp?) artist that will make you phylosophise about life and whatnot, I simply like the art. I also enjoy fiction, so a dragon's art seems interesting to me, unlike some people who find them dumb.

I think there's also a rebel feeling inside most "weird" people (weird considered by the "rest"). Since otakus, or card game players, and similar tend to be marginated from "normal" people, that only strengthens their interest in their hobbies. Considering I'm quite weird myself, it's no wonder I'm so attracted to my hobbies (like videogames).

On a side note, PJ, I think that by limiting words, you somewhat forbid to explain what triggered our interest on the game, since either the manga, the anime, or the money involved are usually the main reasons players were attracted, the other one being someone close to the player. Without these reasons, an "outsider" would use our reasons to play Yugioh on other interests, thus, never relating to this game. "Something", like the anime has to trigger those interests on the "outsiders" and channel them to the TCG. Example:

I like fiction art. I see a massive Blue-Eyes White Dragon in the anime. It has an anime look, and it's a dragon. Of course I will like the dragon. That doesn't mean I will instantly play the TCG, but it certainly will hook me to the anime, and PROBABLY will take me to play the TCG, and, if I enjoy it and find it interesting too, I will be absorbed by it.

I play because I enjoy meeting new people. It has also made my vocab open up to a WHOLE new level. Here on Pojo it has even more. Now I know words like "auto-fail" and "tatz teh pwnage, 2 bad ur a n00b", just kidding. But I've looked up Negate when I first starting playing (Negate Attack) and then the card made sense. Confi was a new word aswell. I've learned about Mythogoly while playing this game, such as Freya and things like that...

People say I am too smart/weird for my own good, I say "I learned it from playing a Children's Card Game...Ladedadedo"

I remember 2 years ago when i was in Highschool. I had a Mythology class and a Chemistry class..

In chemistry we learn about alpha, meta, and magna.

In Mythology we talk about obelisk and Ra...

LOL same day too. Really weird. I didn't say anything, because i'm not gone to say hey "a card is called that from yugioh!"

But, yeah i play this game for the competition. I usually only play at regionals. I hardly ever go to locals. Making new decks, friends, and learning new things is always good. Traveling is the best ever.

Who besides a Ygo Player can say he traveled to over 20 states.

LOL... I'm pretty sure the shonen jump champions and stuff has atleast went to 25 different states, which is amazing. A regular person will only go to maybe 3-5 states. This game is purely amazing.

It's something to do when you have nothing to do that day. If you feel like playing or doing something. There is always gone to be that option.

When you leave highschool, then you don't care if people know you play cards anymore too. So the game gets better and better. The game gets enjoyable when you have a break from school. Like right now i have off from college until the 21. I can play cards in my break, which is nice.

i play this game for several different reasons. one is, its fun. it is a game, and i get enjoyment out of playing it. also, i have a lot of friends who play, from all over the country and world. i have met people from florida, california, texas, canada, and every place in between who had it not been for this game, i would never have gotten the chance to meet. i travel the country, going to more places than the average 18 year old would ever dream of. another reason i play (i can not lie) is because i am successful. I go to shonen jumps and people ask me to sign their cards and mats, and it feels pretty good. i have come to the realization that most likely, this will be the most famous i will ever be. it is nice to be able to google your name, and see pages and pages of articles about you or discussing you. the final reason i still play is profit. i have been able to use this game to make money, enough so that i can afford to travel all around the country at no real cost to my wallet/bank account. so, with all that said, it seems kind of silly for me NOT to play.

i play because of the people. I meet people i would have normally never have met and have made a huge impact on me. I also play for the fun of it but competition is a huge driving force for me behind this game. The chance to grind it out in a close game or pound them into the dirt with a savage beatdown or a flurry of great plays. Also the people i know are freakin hilarious. I don't know if i laugh harder then at a tournament. Im lookin at you justin!

Becasue it is fun. I enjoy games in general and simply love the strategy. I like friendly competion becuse not only do you get the thrill of fighting and winning. I also meet lots of new friends and get to teach younger kids how to play. It warms my heart to teach a little one how to play becuse one time I actually was responsible for improving a kid's reading/math skills.

My playstyle is...STEADY...STEADY...ATTACK..DIE.

I NS a sangan and set MST. Why?....

1. never but never SET sangan...why might get NOCED.../noblemaned
2. bluff with cards that can give u free opening in end phases...let the opponent waste this MST on urs....so never set a MF ....trick ur opponent to dead.
3. never but never summon a monster if u feel opponent has TT set...an error lots of us make. Just keep attacking until he dies.
4. never attack will full power if opponent has like 3 m/t to defend..one of them might be MF...so just attack with 2 and defend with 1 to have some defense por counter.
5. ALways think ur plays twice ...dont rush things...imagine ur playing a game in sudden dead mode..one error and u are dead, perfection is a key to win at this game....NO ERRORS.

Sorry OP, I have to use the words "cards".
Because the only reason I'm still playing is because I can't get rid of my cards. They're all foil versions of the cards in the Zane Truesdale pack which I worked so hard on to get before that pack came out. Suddenly everyone had Cyber Twins, Ends and Chimeratech, etc. Now my cards are worthless and I can't get rid of them.

Long ago, when the pyramids were still young Egyptian Kings played a game of great and terrible power; But these ‘Shadow Games’ caused a war which threatened to destroy the entire world; Until a brave young Pharaoh sealed the magic away within the seven mystical ‘Millennium Items’

I play to prevent the world from being enveloped by the darkness that once threatened the earth 5000 years ago, BY EMPTYING THE BINDER OF ONE TEN YEAR OLD AT A TIME!!

YU-GI-OH!

In all seriousness, I've experimented with pokemon, duel masters, and magic a little, but I always come back to this game for some reason or another.

It's one of my favorite hobbies that I carried over from childhood to adulthood. It means alot to me, and it is just a game, and I don't let it interfere with things I need to get done, so I see no reason to stop playing. It's a part of who I am at this point.

But seriously, I play because it's an excuse to hang out with my friends. Besides, what better in joke is there than one that is impossible for anyone that doesn't know the game to understand. I love the weird looks people give us when we're hanging out and talking in what is essentially a different language. It also brings people of crazily different backgrounds together. I hate to say it, but if I didn't play YGO, I would hang out with friends a lot less often.

i play because of the thrill of winning. the game really gets going because of its potenital for a player to produce explosive moves. and to use cool monsters. i always enjoyed the classic yugioh when i was in middle school. when all odds are against you and you are tested by your deckbuilding skills and knowledge of cards and combos. the life and death thing was pretty intriguing too for some reason. the game also allows you to ecpress yourself in a way. you can show your favorite cards and combos, or even the way you play tells a little bit of what kind of person you are.

Money.

I make a good chunk of money off this game in various ways, and I can't continue to do that if I don't know about the game and its trends.

GOD. I...don't...know...
thanks for reminding me.

Other than the fact it is a fun and engaging game...but that is the rhetorical answer to your question.

Revenge.
I know it's a pathetic reason, but I like to beat noobs who talk trash.
I like to beat those who say "u phail at yugimonz", then I win & laugh my head off.
I like to be a sore winner & rub it in so bad, that they end up getting really pissed.
I usually run burn or some other annoying deck to do it.
I used to play for fun, until these jerks killed that.
I cannot kill them physically, so I try to do the next best thing, i.e humiliate them in front of their mates.
(this is where having no friends & not giving a damn whether you win or lose really pays off)..but I try, lordy how I try. :)

...So many long answers...
Did you know the average attention span of an Adult is only 8 seconds?

Stop beating around the bush and just say it...
We all play Yu-Gi-Oh because we can't get laid, find a girlfriend, are marrired, wife wants me to spend time with the kids, divorced but trying to win the kids by playing their game or other various woman issues. Lol.

i play this game for several different reasons. one is, its fun. it is a game, and i get enjoyment out of playing it. also, i have a lot of friends who play, from all over the country and world. i have met people from florida, california, texas, canada, and every place in between who had it not been for this game, i would never have gotten the chance to meet. i travel the country, going to more places than the average 18 year old would ever dream of. another reason i play (i can not lie) is because i am successful.
I should have had you sign my mat at Chicago.

To put it simply, I play because I love chess. This is basically chess with a few extra pieces. I enjoy the competition, and the friendship, and the challenge. Even if I finish last, I still had fun doing it.

I duel for so much more than a mere tournament victory. I duel for fun and to expand my mind through the tactical strategies that this game provides.

This game is also another interesting way to express the different emotions I have. It's also fun to teach people a lesson or two through a fun game such as duel monsters.

well the reason i play is because in my opinion it fun. also there is another reason that play . that reason is to become a better player than my cousin.
also there is one more reason that i play . now that reason is becaause this game is just like chess. the reason i say that is because it forces you to think and plan your next move carefully. that is why i play .

I seriously play this game just because it's something my friends and me can do, something we all can do when we hang out, when there's nothing else to do. That's really it, and we all go to regionals so we can maybe have some of us qualify, and then have a road trip to nationals. I guess i just do it for fun, even though the actual playing the game isn't really fun. It's other stuff too. I mean, I wouldn't know half of my friends if it wasn't for playing this game, and that's seriously true. I also play to put jackasses in their place, little ****y asses who think this game is the most important thing in life.
