hi im a newbie at pokemon.

i wanna ask some questions.

1 - whats the difference between a modified deck and a regular one.
2 - What cards are useful for me to get for a newbie ( money isnt a issue,i sold most of my ygo.)
3 - In game questions. when you first start out and you lay the basic pokemon down, are they face up or face down? and another question

4 - If its a pokemon that needs colorless energy for an attack, can i just use any like a fire or water? also, vise versa , can i use colorless energy for fire or water energy requirements?

plz. answer my questions. I would highly appreciate it.

1. A Modified(with a capital M) deck would be a deck that is constructed within the limitations of the Modified format; that is sets Expedition and later, and Nintendo Promos numbered 001 and higher. Otherwise a modified deck would just be a pre-constructed deck (that you can buy from shops) that has some of the cards changed.

2. If you're saying Unlimited (that is all sets, all Promos except _____'s Pikachu and Ancient Mew), I would suggest Base Set and Neo: Genesis as a starting point. If you want to play Modified, I would suggest Ruby & Sapphire and Sandstorm.

3. All Basic Pokemon that are set down into play are face up. The only card that lets you set cards face down iS Lt. Surge's Secret Plan.

4. Any Energy type can provide for a Colorless Energy cost, and not the other way round. Colorless Energy can only provide for Colorless Energy cost.

As a matter of fact you can play any Energy on any Pokemon, unless the card specifically states otherwise, like in Boost Energy or Double Rainbow Energy, which limits you to only Evolved Pokemon.

There are bonuses in 2 Energy cards when attached correctly; Darkness an Metal Energy. Darkness Energy gives Dark-type Pokemon and Pokemon with "Dark" in their name a 10 damage boost to their attacks. Metal Energy reduces the damage a Metal-type Pokemon suffers by 10 done by opponent's Pokemon. They can stack, e.g. +30 damage when 3 Darkness Energy are attached to a Poochyena, or -20 damage done to a Steelix when 2 Metal Energy are attached to it.

Special Energy, being not Basic Energy, are limited to only 4 a deck like any other card.

He was asking about the initial set up. And in the initial set up, the cards ARE placed face down.
After everyone is set and prizes are placed (after Mulligans are resolved), then all the in-play Pokemon are flipped face up.

Yes, any color can pay for colorless costs.
There are Pokemon that have a color but whose attacks have colorless costs. Those costs can be paid with any color as well.
Just like a retreat cost can be paid with any color.
