If i have say Tyrouge on the bench and i draw hitmonchan do i have to evolve the baby, or can i play hitmonchan to the bench.

If you evolve, you get a special situation where your Hitmonchan is an Evolved Pokemon. This gives it some advantages and disadvantages. A good example would be Double Rainbow Energy. If you want, you can evolve Tyrogue into Hitmonchan and you can attach the Double Rainbow Energy to it. Also, if you're evolved you are prone to many things that affect Evolutions, like Shedinja's Poke-Body, Sanstorm Omastar's Pull Down, etc.

If you don't and play you Hitmonchan seperately, you get 2 Pokemon.
