In Order of the Phoenix, he loses to Dumbledore despite the fact that he had Umbridge, Fudge, and Percy backing him up (Kingsley was there too, but had to job to Dumbledore because Kingsley's just too awesome to lose). He arrives LATE at the Battle of the Department of Mysteries and goes on to arrest Death Eaters that FIFTEEN YEAR OLD KIDS captured.

In Half-Blood Prince, Dawlish is sent to follow Dumbledore when the Headmaster leaves school to search for Voldemort's Horcruxes, but is "regretfully" hexed by the Headmaster.

He is Confunded by Severus Snape early on in Deathly Hallows.

He is then sent to capture Neville's Gran who promptly sends him to the hospital before going on the run.

In short, John Dawlish's loss record seems to be directly opposite to that of Kingsley Shacklebolt's "awesome moments" record.

To be fair, getting owned by Dumbledore/Snape is reasonable. Neville's Grandma I can see as him not being prepared well enough due to expecting her to be some "frail old woman." And all aurors save Tonks and Kingsley were late to the scene anyway, so you can't exactly put the blame on him.

But yes, he doesn't seem THAT good at his job. If he was tracking Voldemort instead of Dumbledore, he would probably be dead like 17 times by now.
