I found a great article on mugglenet that shows the relationship between the characters Severus Snape and Severus Septimus in Machiavelli's "The Prince".
This shows that JK Rowling is undoubtedly knowledgeable in the 16th century renaissance and has added similarities from Machiavelli into her Harry Potter books.
You can read the article HERE (http://www.mugglenet.com/editorials/editorials/edit-texan01.shtml)
Based on this, some theorize that Snape will be neither good nor evil, but out for his own gains.
The author thinks Snape will become the new Dark Lord though...
Only time shall tell.
