u battle with him like in true double battles and i think occasionally in a 1on1, also you give him tips on what to raise ie. i told him to raise a manetric instead of a swellow

not that i know of they are battle tower battles though maybe an occassional freebattle

In the Battle Tower in Emerald, there is a trainer on the left side of the room who you can talk to once every 24 hours. (real time, not play time) He/she will ask you questions about what to do with his team (what pokemon to use, what moves to use, what items, etc), and when you finish giving him advice, you can fight him in the Battle Tower, and I believe you can also pair with him in the multi battle part of the Battle Tower as well.
