Ok right,

Mudkip's awesome for the first badge but not so much for the second, look for a flying type the best choice being Taillow as it's wing attack will be super effective against Machop. I also used Sableye found in the Dewford cave to the top left of the gym. Aron is also very strong but not very good at attack (also found in Dewford cave).

For the third gym Mudkip's evolution Marstomp (evolves Lv 16) should be perfect as he is not effected by electric moves.

I agree with the above, ya need a good flying to beat the 2nd gym and also to use Fly later in the game. Ralts is a decent psychic if your new to the game, ya can get one in the same route wally did. Ur also gunna want a electric like electrike and fighting of your choice.
