Volume 21 Teen Rating:Contains Fantasy Violence
This is one of my favorite volumes ever, so it kinda saddens me to see crammed full of crappy Viz Boxes O' Doom. If they're not putting some extra effort into this volume, then I'm not expecting they'll change for any volume. That said, they did make an effort to cram in as much 'crap's and 'hell's as possible, to make up for their lack of ability to actually swear. Seriously, there's at least five 'crap's in this volume, and Malik uses 'hell' about every other page. And plenty of %&#@, you can usually tell which word they're meant to represent (and words which the old Viz would have used without batting an eyelid). Heh.
For those who don't know, this volume finishes up the Battle Royale and shows the whole Jonouchi/Malik duel. I've never read the end of this duel in the manga, so I was interested too. And I wasn't disappointed, this manga (as usual) is better than the anime in nearly every way. The only thing I think I liked better in the anime is Ra's God Phoenix attack, it's a little underwhelming in the manga.
Anime-manga changes: In the Battle Royale, Jonouchi uses Legendary Fisherman instead of Axe Raider, as LF doesn't need sacrifices in the manga. The Malik duel plays out a little differently at the start, as Helpoemer doesn't need a sacrifice in the manga. Thus, Gil Garth is summoned a little later, although things soon catch up back to speed. Obviously the anime's wussy Plasma Eels are replaced with Viser Des/Deaths. Interesting, Honda is the only one in the manga to find 'Jonouchi Fire' a little strange. Also, there's plenty of stuff that people who are only familiar with the 4Kids version will find new.
There is also one edit: Helpoemer's middle finger is edited out, in the last panel of Duel 185: The Hymn of Hell. In between chapters there's concept art for Gilford the Lightning, and also Exarion Universe.
Malik's a bundle of fun, as usual. When Jonouchi claims his Legend Devil is too strong, Malik says to blame the card designers. Also, he says that the Penalty Game he had in mind for Jonouchi is a little soft, so he'll double it. The Penalty Game turns out to be in the form of Lava Golem (who melts all kinds of awesomeness in the manga. I love it how Jonouchi stands on the cage bars to avoid the lava on the ground).
I never thought I'd need to show you the true nature of God... You can be proud of that, Jonouchi... But proud or not...it ends now!!J-Jonouchi! Get up! Wake up, man! If you don't wake up...I'm gonna kick your butt!

LOL. Blame the card designers! That's like...Something LittleKuriboh would write.
Shame they're still editing out cussing and Helpoemer's finger, but I can't say I didn't see it coming.
Am I the only one who seriously wishes Viz would go back to being totally unedited?

It's out already?! The site said June 5th...
Oh well, saw the Helpoemer edit coming.
So the Lava Golem itself was the Penalty Game? Was it even a card in the manga?

Am I the only one who seriously wishes Viz would go back to being totally unedited? You and I both, sister. So the Lava Golem itself was the Penalty Game? Was it even a card in the manga?Oh yes, it's still a card. I think it's a tad metaphorical. Malik appeared to have assumed he would beat Jonouchi with Lava Golem (so the Penalty Game would have been burning to death in the cage).
I don't much like how the blurb says 'if he loses, he'll get a one-way ticket to the grave'. Real cheesy. Also, the spine-picture is Jonouchi. We haven't had a Yugi spine for ages. We've had a great variety with Malik, Bakura, Mai, Kaiba...

Don't blame me for the Anime (or in this case Manga) Broken Cards blame the card designers. It is amazing that only now someone brought that up.

On a more detailed read, I've stumbled upon the typos that make Viz's Duelist....well, Viz's Duelist. One of them includes Mokuba calling his bro 'Kaiba' again. He does correctly call him 'Seto' later on though.
Seeing Jonouchi's dream reminds me what the dub did to it *shudders*

Do your job.
Additional Comment:
Finally got around to buying mine. The usual dissapointment with Viz's handling of the series.
They didn't even bother to mention that they editted the picture on the publication page...

They didn't even bother to mention that they editted the picture on the publication page...I think the only reason Nightmare Cross's edit was mentioned was because it was a card, so they could mention it in the card section.
I was looking back across Duelist, and I was looking for trends. First two volumes were edited properly, then the Viz Box of Doom emerged in 3. It slowly took control, but the volumes were a bit erratic. For example, Volume 6 was absolutely littered with V-BoD, but Volume 7 was given a much better editing job. I think our attentions were taken away by Viz's first YGO picture edit in that volume.
Interestingly, it was volume 14, when Viz started to take two months instead of one, that the editing got worse. Now every single bit of protruding text gets a DIY Viz Box slapped over it. I don't see why they can't keep up to the same high standard Millennium World keeps. I mean, I haven't seen any Millennium World since Volume 5 (I still can't believe Volume 6 is OCTOBER!!) but I'm sure it's fine. The chapter of GX I saw was well-done, but then again GX manga is neater anyway. Not that I have any interest whatsoever in Viz's GX.

I hear you, man. The reason volume eight/one was so properly editted is because Sengupta probably turned in her script early enough for proper editting but then once Yamazaki took over in volume two/nine things went down hill.
Dude, volume thirty-seven (MW #6) isn't out until October?
Ouch.

SJ still needs to work on their card info in the back though! i've noticed tons of cards that they say don't exist that are infact real cards in the OCG!
ex in Vol 21... Viser Des is a REAL card! as is Malevolent Catastrophe!
I also love when they say that some cards exist when support cards for them donnot! ex: Masked Beast of Guardius (not a real game card) mask of remnance (no comment) Mask of Remnance needs Guardius to activate it!
There was also something similar wih Selket and Temple of the kings!

Selket requires "Cathedral of Nobles" to exist on the field, the latter of which is banned thanks to its ability that allows traps to be activated the same turn they are set.
All of those cards have yet to come over here. (Malevolent Catastrophe is apparently getting a reprint in SD13: Revival of Grand (Great?) Dragon.)

In the video games it was called Cathedral of Nobles. Both Viz and the games are notorious for mistranslations. We won't know for sure until it's released.
Strange about the Mask of Remnants/Des Guardius thing though.

That's not all, there are plenty more i have found, such as Goblin Zombie not real as well as Hanibal Necromancer!
OH! And they also said that BYSER SHOCK wasn't a real card! I had an English 1 at one point! it came in PGD!
Additional Comment:
Sorry, the real card is Cyber Shock isn't it?

Guys, the cards section at the end is riddled with mistakes. They list the anime names of cards that are released in the TCG. They claim all non-TCG cards don't exist, but sometimes they forget. They make up names, like Cyber Shock.

Nope, you were right, it's Byser Shock. Like Ryu said, the MotC section is often full of errors. They're usually good with the OCG names, but when it comes to the English ones...yeah, I wouldn't go looking there for accurate information.
Y'know, I was never really a fan of Malik, since he was so crappy in the dub. (Synth voice + lack of personality = phail.) But I think he's becoming one of my favorite characters in the manga. He's just hilarious. His line to Jonouchi about "decorating the arena with his dismembered corpse"...classic.

I bet that the information about the cards was correct at the time they were originally released, but Viz hasn't bothered to update the section.

OH i forgot to show you guys my favorite one! Duelist 19 Crush Card (Called 'Deck Devastation Virus" in the TCG)
I'm just saying that that section is riddled with errors and they need to keep a tighter check on their facts becuase some of their detalied card coverage is wrong!
Additional Comment:
Oh, and all Viz anime is riddled with fillers and they change a whole lot, just rad the manga, even if filtered it's ten time better than both the 4kids dubbs and even the Original japanese

All of those cards have yet to come over here. (Malevolent Catastrophe is apparently getting a reprint in SD13: Revival of Grand (Great?) Dragon.)The English name is Structure Deck —Rise of the Dragon Lords— but the set number hasn't been announced, so we know yet whether it'll be SD13-EN or something else.
The official English TCG card name for the Ultra Rare card is Felgrand Dragon, but none of the official English TCG names for the other 6 "all new" card have been revealed yet.

I really hope they don't cheat us out of cards that are supposed to be in there like they did with the new starter decks. I still think there is no reason why we can't get the same cards Japan does (we really should have the light and dark structure decks!).
