According to the Shonen Jump Manga Sneak Peek booklet distributed at the Force of the Breaker (FOTB-EN) Sneak Preview, the VIZ translated Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Volume 1 will be "available" November 2007.

There's no mention of a promotional card attached to the book, but then the release date is six months in the future, well beyond the usual 90-day product forecast window.

I'll buy it...if they use the original names!!!

By the way, how many chapters are in this one?Assuming it's a port of the original (which it will be), the first nine chapters. As for using the original names, I think the most we can hope for is a mention of the original names at the beginning. There's little chance they're going to go over and re-edit every chapter to replace the dub names with the originals.

I doubt I'm going to get the Viz GX volumes like I get Duelist and such. From what I hear and have seen, the translations are satisfactory, but TnKP do a much better job (it actually looks more professional than Viz's version) and they use the original character names and card names. I'm pretty sick of seeing nearly every new card used in the GX manga get a totally random and unnecessary new TCG name.

At least it will be in for Chirstmas. It is also good to see that it might have the first 9 stories, so we wont have to wait ages to see the end of Syrus Vs Jaden. Still Volume 2 will definately the one to get.

The 6-part Hibiki Kōyō story arc begins in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Chapter 10 and runs through Chapter 15.

Glad they kept the nice Judai/The Earth cover. As if there was any doubt they would, though...

Yeah, I wouldn't keep my hopes up for original names. That train has left the station. It's still well-edited, and the manga-only characters do keep their original names, so it's not nearly as unreadable as the script to any episode of dub GX.

Incidentally, here's (http://janime.info/card/YugiohGX/VJ09_07/02.jpg) Janime's scan of the excellent cover for Volume 2, depicting Manjoume casually perching atop Light and Darkness Dragon, very similar to Judai and The Earth in the Volume 1 cover.

I like that Volume 2 cover even better than the Volume 1. After all, Manjoume is so much cooler than Judai, and his dragon rocks.

Most likely, we'll get our GX Volume 2 in June or July next year, and I'm already excited about it.

On the X-Ref list...Carrieroid = = Navyroid **
Oil = = Sekiyu Saikutsu **
Shuttleroid = = Shuttleroid **

Added!

Armoroid = ???????? = Armouroid Gaidengo *
Elemental Hero Voltic = = Elemental Hero Voltech **
Hero Solidarity = = Hero Solidarity **
Voltic Spear = = Voltech Spear **Wow, more names kept than usual, but they'll have to try harder to break the massive lead held by name changes over name retainments. And that's just sad.

Not quite sure why 'Navyroid' was so wrong, and why Gaidengo is now simply an 'Armoroid'. And the less said on the chapter title 'translation', the better...

I still wish I could see this stuff for myself, mind.

Familiar Stranger

Not quite sure why 'Navyroid' was so wrong, and why Gaidengo is now simply an 'Armoroid'.
Carrieroid is actually a lot more descriptive of the actual monster.

In English, "Navy" implies an entire military force, not a single entity. While a navy may indeed consist of a single ship, native English speakers imagine fleets of ships, not just one.

And, while having the name "Gaidengo" for this monster is nice to have, the single word Armoroid is all that's needed to establish it as a "roid" monster. Had there been several, the individual name might've been deemed necessary, but such is not the case.

Since Armoroid is sufficient unto itself, why borrow trouble with a portion of the name that might conceivably have unknown copyright issues?

Additional Comment:

Amazon.com is now taking pre-orders for Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Volume 1 (2007.11.06, Shueisha/Viz, ISBN 978-1-4215-1378-2).

Still no word on whether or not an official English TCG card is attached.

Red Eyes Black Dragon? Do we really need to know that it's eyes are red? Do we need to know that it has eyes? Isn't that taken for granted? Black could be offensive. Let's just call it Dragon.

I'm just yanking your chain, but I'm still displeased at the mass-renaming the GX manga cards are receiving. Viz's Volume 1 better be pretty amazing...

Considered a slacker by his peers, Jaden battles teachers and students alike to make his mark in the Duel World. Can he bring his low-level dorm, Slifer Red, to the top of the deck? Or will the champions in the Obelisk Blue dorm hang onto their winning hand?Hmm. That's, er, a pretty lame blurb.

Allowing for English colloquialisms, it's not all that different from the original Japanese blurb.

I can see the similarities, but I think that even your literal translation sounds better than Viz's blurb.

First of all, we all could've done without the card puns. I'm not sure anyone finds them clever anymore. The end of the original blurb is great. "START!!". A lot better than card puns in my eyes. Why couldn't they have just gone with something simple like that?

Ryusaki
08-27-2007, 02:23 PM
I just realised one plus point: it doesn't mention 'get your game on'. Unless of course that's the volume name.

Viz's version not have enough card puns for you? Try this on for size.Wild card Jaden Yuki is stuck at the bottom of the deck in Slifer Red, the very lowest-stock dormitory in Duel Academy. He'll have to put on his very best poker face to deal himself up to the ace ranks of the prestigious Obelisk Blue card-slingers, including the cruel card shark Chazz Princeton! Shuffling alongside him is his shy friend Syrus Truesdale, and together they face the task of trumping teachers and students alike to draw out the title of Duel King!

Actually, his name is generally given in kanji as [ 遊城十代 ], as in the blurb quoted above, but you're correct that it's properly Romanized as Yūki Jūdai.

Fixed!

For what it may be worth, Yūki, like Yūgi, is Romanized without the doubled vowel in the official English character name, which is why I didn't think to use the doubled vowel here.

Same. Especially that little nod to R in one of them.

Anyway, I finally found one today at a local Borders (bad timing though - turns out a store literally one minute from my house just got them in too). The only interesting little detail I noticed was that "Dragon, Light & Dark" was changed back to L&DD in chapter 3. Hm, I guess they really were gonna use that as its TCG name...wow.

Otherwise, it's good, aside from, you know, the dub names. And the pointless card name changes. But manga generally seems to look better in smaller print, so it's still worth the buy.
