Easter is approaching, and what would Easter be without a fresh volume of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelist? Before anyone gets excited, no, Viz haven't cleaned up their act. It's the same old Viz Box O' Doom-ridden, unpoetic publication it's been since...well...a long time ago. Nothing extra-specially bad or good about this volume.

For all who do not know, this volume was originally Yu-Gi-Oh! 27 and chronicles the Marik/Bakura duel and half of the Battle Royale.

Crap Count: 2
&%$@ Count: 3
Viz Box O' Doom Count: 13450004400300340000 (something like that)

Now as I actually have the Japanese volume as well this time around, I really can't justify these Viz Boxes. It's just sloppy editing. On the brighter side, there don't appear to be any significant card name mix-ups. The kanji on the art on Shield and Sword has been translated differently to back in vol. 4, but complaining about that would just be nitpicking. They chose a nice picture for the back cover: It's Yugi, Kaiba, Blue Eyes and the Black Magician. I think it's the picture that was used on the EX-R Starter Deck.

The story itself is cool. Before the duel between Marik and Bakura it seems like they just won't shut up ("I know that...Oh yeah well I know this...Well I knew that you knew that I know that...") but that is amusingly rectified when Bakura comments on how absurd the three-way conversation is going and sticks his fingers in his ears when good-Marik speaks.

Viz's interpretation of the legendary Bakura quote:I'll let you win this time... But remember...I will be resurrected...to kill you. H-heh hen heh... Because...I am the darkness... h-ha ha ha ha...Eh, I've seen better. Not bad. I've always thought that it was just a rumour that it was Bakura who killed Shadi. I thought it was just fan-speculation. But no, it's true.

An average job on a fairly good volume. But I swear, if they keep this up right up to the end of Duelist...

It's out already? Man, my local store and Borders are late...

Huh, I was always under the impression that the Bakura vs. Marik and Alcatraz Battle Royale duels were anime-only. That's weird.

*Shudder*

I plan on checking out my local B&N this Saturday for a copy, along with Eyeshield 21.

You know the drill, Ryū-kun, what's the publication page say?

The VIZ Romanization of the official Japanese OCG card name [ 右手に盾を左手に剣を ] is also incorrect.

VIZ Romanization: Migite ni Tate wo Hidarite ni Ken

Actual Romanization: Migite ni Tate o Hidarite ni Ken o

Staff page appears the same as usual, Yūgi.

And if we're picking out errors, the error in the Japanese volume carried through, with De-Spell incorrectly being used to destroy Mirror Force, then becoming Remove Trap next chapter. I'm surprised that error wasn't fixed for the Japanese graphic novel release. 'Gozaburo Kaiba' was also spelled wrong the first time Mokuba said it, as 'Gosaburo Kaiba', but the next time he said it it was correct.

On a brighter side, it seems they've finally fixed their mix-ups as opposed to first name and surname. Mokuba calls Kaiba 'Seto' again and Honda is calling Otogi 'Otogi'.

Just got my copy in yesterday, the first duel was sort of dull but the Battle Royale was H-O-T!

Yep, just got mine yesterday. (Strangely enough, the large Borders didn't have it, but the Borders Express in the mall next to it did. Huh.).

Malik's Ra One-Turn-Kill was awesome.

Wait, I read Duelist, but I missed this. What connection does Shadi and Marik have in common when it comes to that?

Evil Vs Evil. Could have thought up a better title. Sounds good mind.

Wait, I read Duelist, but I missed this. What connection does Shadi and Marik have in common when it comes to that?Well, it was Shadi who lied to Marik that 'the Pharaoh' killed his father (instead of Dark Marik).

When Marik says this, Bakura thinks:What?! Shadi? But that's impossible! Five years ago, he was already...

When Marik says this, Bakura thinks:

Wow, you're not using 'Malik' anymore? Was the name ever really confirmed as being 'Marik' or what?

I have to admit that I was kinda swayed when I heard that the unedited original French manga, which came before the dub name Marik and uses actual accents on the characters' names, uses 'Marik'.

I'm a bit stuck on the matter, but since Duelist is using 'Marik', I'll use it here. I just wish the anime Battle City Finals had used a scoreboard with all the English-written names on, like they did in the KCGP. That would've solved the issue.

Well, I thought it was Malik because Malik is an Mid Eastern name and...he's Mid Eastern.

Marik and Malik are interchangable are they not? I guess it dosn't really matter if you use 'Malik' or 'Marik' since its hard to tell whats what with the names.

On the other hand, with Japanese language...*Puts up the Familiar Stranger Signal*

Malik is a traditional Arabic name that means king in that language. The name of the Iraqi prime minister, al-Maliki (literally, the kingly), is a variation on this.

Marik, on the other hand, is a Hungarian surname (more correctly written as Mařík) that means warlike in that language. Polish and Czechoslovakian variations on the name include Marek and Mirko.

Although both names are appropriate for the character and the R/L phoneme ambiguity makes them interchangeable in Japanese phonetics, I think that Takahashi clearly intended the name to be Malik.

I am glad you said that Stranger, it has fulfilled my hope in Malik. Hungarian surname? I guess not even the French manga was perfect.

That makes sense, since Melech is Hebrew for king. And couldn't Amelda's brother's name be translated as Mirko, making them from that area?

Heh, I was re-reading this volume yesterday, and I noticed that the chapter referred to Lekunga as Rekunga. Then, I looked at the card section at the back and it's listed as Kelbek! And chance is misspelled as change (along with the Gozaburo misspelling). I don't enjoy finding these errors, these errors enjoy finding me :(

Also, it occurred to me how blasphemous and offensive some of he 'God comments' would be if taken out of context. o.O Talking about 'defeating God', 'not being afraid of God', stuff like that. It's not like they say 'the God', or 'God Card'. Heavy stuff.

That's why Ned Flanders doesn't read manga.:) The way they say it sounds a tad melodramatic, though.

If you were Christian would you call God "the god"?No, just 'God'.

I'm not complaining about Viz's translation in this case, in fact all translated quotes I've seen before just say 'God', but I'm quite surprised that Viz do too, considering how brash it sounds in English and Viz's stricter regulations as of late. Thankfully, they seemed to have stopped calling them 'Egyptian God Cards'.

Interesting.

This is the Holy Grail of Yu-Gi-Oh!, a duel among duels, a battle of battles! Possibly one of the most entertaining duels in the entire series, this volume pit both of the main villains against each other in an ultimate show of badassery and awesomeness. I don't think I'll ever recover from this duel, nor will Duelist ever reach this level of win ever again.

Bakura v.s. Marik ~ NEVER FORGET! :p
